Melp G. 8 CLARK. Programmes ‘Open at 74—eommences BY THE SOUTHERN MAIL. —— (Correspondence of the Herald.) Wasuineton, June 8, 1844. 1 can state on authority which has hitherto never failed me, that Robert Rantoul, ex-Collector of Boston, is to be appointed Secretary of the Trea- sury. At least, “such is the determination,” says my !oformant, ‘at the White House to-day. What may cole over the spirit of this nights dream, itis innpossiiia for mortal man to say.” Mr. Rantoul is understood to be friendly to President Tyler, and if he gives him the appointment, it willbe pretty conclusive evidence that Mr. Tyler can find ao enemy who will accept the office, for hie principle is to purchase enemies with offices when beg will accept them. It was on this peincinte that he of- fered the Secretaryship ats ie Tr meeery to the Hon. Wm. Allen, Seowor from Ohio, whom he knew (to my own knowledge) to be one of his most violent enemies, and a man who despises him | with a contempt equal to that entertained by John Randolph for sheep. The tacl committee of the Tyler Convention, who were laden with the respoasibilities of catch | ing some one to run as Vice President with Joha Tyler, have scared up several whom they have chased, and one of whom they succeeded in running dowa, The commitcee choked him so badly the poor man has been unable to articulate a word since. Is there no one who will take the office? However it is not essential, for John Jones of the Madisonian says this afternoon that Mr. Tyler is determined to run at all hazards and in any and all contingences He wants vee people to i himjustice. Prehaps they will, in Executive Session to-day, Judge Breese fin- ished his Texas speech. Mr. Simmons follows. And Gov. Woodbury rejoins. The treaty will be { Fejected in a tew day: TWENTY-EIGHTH CONGRESS, FIRST SESSION. Senate. Wasuineron, June Srd, 1844. NATURALIZATION Mr. Bucwanan presented another petition from Philadelphia, similar in all respects to the one “a sented by him the other day, on the subject of turalization. It took the same direction. OREGON. Mr. Benton presented a petition from Oswego, which could not be heard. But Mr. Benton took occasion to make some remarks, in which he en- couraged emigrants to Oregon to go-ahead, the laws would follow them. That is the order of thine iB this country, the people go ahead, and the laws follow. CORRESPONDENCE. " Mr. Axcuer offered a resolution calling on the tween President for copies ot correspondence the ministers of Mexic ro and the United States, La lative to the expulsion of the natives from Up California, and also in relation to trade in t! at country. Passed. SOCIETY OF FRIENDS. On a-motion by Mr. Buchanan, to print a me- morial from the Quakers against the annexation of ‘Texas, on the ground that st would furnish a mar- ket for slaves, and thus tend to perpetuate slavery, Mr. Haywood asked for the yeas and nays. The question was taken upon postponing the motion— which was carried—yeas 24, nays 14. PBA PATCH. Mr. Dayton moved to take up this old and cele- brated bill, which has been ordered to a third read- ing. Mr. Bararp moved to strike out the name of Horace Binney, and insert in its place that of Chief Justice Taney, who, he said, had consented to serve. In the present stage of the bill, this motion could a be entertained by general consent, t. Benton objected. The only course left was to recommit the bill, which wasdone. JAMES REESIDE’S CLAIMS. ‘The committee on the judiciary reported in favor of referring these claims, amounting to $188,000, to the third Auditor of the Treasury, who is an officer of the War Department, under the superin- tendance of the U.S. Attorney General. It will be recollected that Mr. Reeside, of Philadelphia, was a mail contractor, and the claims originated for services rendered, liabilities incurred, and pay- ments made. Mr. Bucuanan stated that when he was a boy at a grammar school, James Reeside was driver of a two horse carriage. He rose, flourished and pros- pered—became rich—and finally established bis mail lines and his credit throughout the United States.
