Number of pas. sengers on twenty-eight railways, 348,041. The receipts for Passengers on forty-four railways, £77,760 ; ditto for goods on forty-two railways, £26,961—total, £104,721. ‘This is an ayerage of £65 68. per mile per week. It will be ob- served that there has been an increase in the receipts of nearly allthe roads. There has lately been considerable speculations going on in railway shares in London, and prices, as will be seen by the above table, have reached points higher than the affairs of the roade will warrant. ‘The French railroads are full seventy-five per cent above par, and pay four and seven per cent dividends. The railvoads of this country will compare very favorably with those of Europe, The receipts per mile are not so large in this country, but the costs and expenses are 50 very small compared with those of Europe, that better dividends are realized on such investments. Some of the railroads of Great Britain pay as high asten per cent per annum, such as the Grand Junetion, Liverpool and Manchester, and London and Birmingham. We have roads in this country that pay eleven per cent. Many are restricted to a certain per cent, andthe surplus is used for other purposes. The Lowell railroad, for instance, cannot declare over eight percent. In Great Britain, where the rate of interest rules as low as two and three per cent, a stock paying seven or ten per cent must be in great demand. It is im- possible to arrive at the average per cent capital invested in railroad stocks in this country produces, as some of our most costly roads as yet have made no dividend. The Western, costing more than seven millions of dollars, has not paid the smallest fractional dividend. The Harlem, Norwich and Worcester, and Long Island are as yet un- productive property, and the capital used for their con, struction is nominally dead. The actua) average annual per cent income of the railroads of this country cannot be known, until those commenced are in active operation. Suffice it to say, capital cannot be more safely invested than in these works of internal improvement. A meeting of the stockholders of the Girard Bank will take place on the 27th of June, in the office of the Com- pany, Philadelphia, for the purpose of electing Directors and disposing of any other business that may come before them. The affuirs of the bank are daily improving. The asset, are daily becoming more valuable, and it is deemed neces. sary that a good Board of Directors should be chosen to take every advantage the times may create, to liquidate the liabilities of the concern, and, if posible, place the in- stitution in « position to resume business as early as pos: ble. The minds of capitalists are becoming impressed with the belief that there will be for sometime to come a period of the greatest prosperity and lhey are consequently making efforta to resuscitate every defunct bank in the country, to help carry out and extend the general welfare of the people. We do net doubt but there are many at this moment, who actually believe in the resuscitation of the old United States Bank. There are many who no doubt, believe that in a few years another National Bank will grow out of the remnants of the old. The revival of the Girard Bank would be an inducement for those inter- ested, to breathe the breath of life into other lifeless insti tutions. Every one of these concerns brought into exist- ence will help along the speculative movements of the day, and perhaps be a great benefit, by bringing about acrisis and an explosion, before every thing and every one in the country is ruined hy the revolution commenced hy the great regulators of the currency. We feel satisfied that movements are progressing towards the same stage of affairs that existed in 1836 and 1837, and the reaction must consequently be as great as experienced in ’36 and 89. The increase of banking capital, by resuscitating old concerns, or by creating new institutions, is sure to in- crease the movements of trade, until the natural course of business is destroyed, and prices and demand become of a fictitious nature that recognise no limit.
