Nauaxr Laxping Mass—Thomas Thomp- son.—As tar as likeness of the place goes, this is a food picture, but the coloring is unlike any we ave ever seen ut thut charming watering place. 155. Tue Vinuac nooL--H. J. Buddingtoa —Very clever, indeed; there are some nice tints about the house which ord well with the varie- gated foliage, which is remarkably well handled Tt looks more like an English scene than Ameri- can. 156. Tiomson’s Lavinia—G.W. Flagg, H.—The drawing of this figure is free, and full ot grace The face is well painted, but there is too great a mass of the same coloring in the bottom of the pic- ture; if there were-a little more lightness about her robe, it would much improve the whole of the sketch. _169. Gimts’ Fronic—G. W. Flagg, H.—This ture does not show near a3 much interest as Ware is displayed in 156; there is too much warmth throughout 163, Porrrarror a Granrieman—A. B Durand, N. A.—Thiough this is beautifully executed, we al: most regret to see Mr. Durand touch on anything but landscape, he shines so mach in that branch. 164. Scenr From Ivannor—J. W. Glass, jr-— Altogether a very clever picture; there 1s a great harmony of colors, the red (which prevails a. leetle too much) 18 nicel} introduced. the grouping of the figures, attitudes, &c., are excellent; one or two of the horses are out of drawing and all shape, foreshortened white horse is, however, very good, and comes in well. If this artist applies him- self and works hard, we see every thing in him to make a second “* \ooverman.”” 167. Tue Girt rom Brazu—J. H. Shegoque, N. ‘The subject is preity, but here badly handled. 168. Manin: Vesseis comina in--G. KR. Bond- field.—The water is very good, and the style resem- bles much that of Mr. Birch. The waves (whic are as difficult to manage on canvass as they are at sea) are natural—the vessels are hard and stiff. 170. Porrrair or a Gentteman—O. J. Dicken- son.—There appears to have been much attentic paid to the painting of the cigar in the genitleman’s hand, which adds much to the beauty of this por- trait. 174, Comrositor Sutrina Eyre—C. E. Wei The drawing, perspective, detail, Wc., are exce lent, the coloring 1s good also, but the general ef- tort’ is destroyed by the hardness and decision of outline. 176. Portrait or Lapy—C. This we consider to be the Se optealoakanth portraits in the exhibition this year. There is less chalk throughout this work than any other we have 177. Girt Asteer—W. Mount, N. A.—The position of the girl Aes she is evidently sink in sleep; the air of tranquillity and repose ex- pressed on her tace is remarkable, but the coloring is wretched. 181. Srupy rrom Nature—A. B. Durand, N. A. idently from nature and true to it, too; the sub- t simple, but picturesque. 182.—Porrratr or a GentLeman.—C. E. Wei —We wish this artist would soften down his out- lines more ; it would take away frem the genera! harshness which pervades all his pictures. He possesses much talent. 183.—Inpian Warcnina vor Burrato.—A. J. Miller.—Very clever, bold, und gives the idea of action. The horse is rather too Arabic for the Prairie. 189.—Henrew Women Borrowine Tit or tae Eoyrrians.—J. G. Chapman, N. A we much admire; the eelors are all nicely balan ed, the attitudes good and well conceived. We think that there should be a few more shadows, uot very dark, thrown in there, as the painting lias rather too light an appearance. 195 —Poxtrait of a Gentirman.—J. Hicke, A.—Ver ¢ head, the shoulders well thrown in. 197,—Portrarr or a Cuitp.—W. Page, N. A —This must be a likeness; the expression of the eyes and mouth are excellent; but the same tone of color that is in the face pervades the back- ground. 200.—Bratr + Ingham: D. Huntington, N. A.—Here, indeed, is there genius, talent, and a knowledge ot the art Noomblned: How bold the expression—the turn of the head. We cannot adinire the hasty background, or the working in of the face sha- dows, or the shadow on the neck under the chin. 201.—An op Warr, on Fisu-Dam, &c.—H Boddington.—The water is very bad, but the sky is effective. 205. ‘Tne Imaog Peouan—J. W. Edmonds, N. A.—The lights are a great deal too much scattered, everything 1s too much defined. The constrained attitude of the Pedlar is good, and the grouping 1s tolerable. Z 208. Tur Winow—G. W. Flagg, H.—This is one of the best we have ever seen of this artist's productions. 209. Scene rn SwitzeRLann—R. Gigrouse, A— The snow capped hills in the distance admirable and the whole picture is also much to be admired, save in too much use of Indian red. J N. A.—This does not come “up to oar idea of Mr. Co! The reflection of the trees in the water is (eo green, but the re- of course, good. Groves oF INDIANS PLAYING AT BALL--C Deas, A.—Farther than that the drawing and atti- e good, nothing more can be here seen wor- comment. BRIGAND DELIVERING UP 1118 ARMS AT Sont- NO, IN Traty—J. B. Waugh —Mr. Waugh is cer- tainly a. most rising young man, and deserves great credit if it were only for this one picture. DBeauti- fal harmony of colors, bold free ttyle, the detail excellent; it the back ground to the lett were a lit- ue darker, we think that it would chime in better with the fore ground. 244. Emicrant Famriy.—A. B. Durand, N. A. The landscape of this, us customary with Mr. Du- rand, is exquisite ; but the frour of figures repre- ting emigrants is not highly characteristic, and rhight equally well pass for a party of snug citizens snyoying afew hours of rural felicity, 247. Virw on THR Hovsatonic,—C. 8. Gaylord. —There is some merit in this landscape, especially in the sky and clouds, which are light and airy. 256. Skercn or a GentLeman.—An Armateur,— Phis gentleman’ 's sketch shire agreatdeal of es taste and style, both in the drawing and handhing His coloring is, however, deflicient in warmth, pu- and clearness. Lanoscark Woop Scrxe.—A. B. Darnnd, 3 picture though suflicientiy meritorious, Jess ranch below the usual standard of of this artist, and exhibits a flatness ind want of brilliancy of coloring. Portrait ciagh Lavy. ae 'P, Gray, N. A eautitul portrait i8 1m our opinion, perhaps the exhibition. The usual detect in Mr, Gray’s painting, an aping of the old mastera, is less conspicuous in this instance ; and what there may be of it, is merely sufficient to aerate to is picture a degree of mellawness which is highly pleasing and satisfactory. ‘The painting in question is strikingly characterized by expression, grace, ease, and beauty of coloring. The drawing also is xcellent, and the whole subject highly creditabl to the talents of this promising young artist. His successful method of glazing (always a dangerous ation) is well worthy of the aleation of the student. 263. Porrrait or Dr. Woon Exanaver In THE L nan, N. A.—Possesses some EARLIEST C. Chap- but is rather PERSON, THE Srares merit, suprMan.—J. G. Chapman.— ‘The intention of the ttle costume, position of A Lazy, F, Quite a gem in its way. s well carried out her the figure, and, indeed seories are hape vily conceived and skilfully executed. Among the w taults which we observed, is a want of correct the right arm of the boy, which a) appe ears o grow out of his chest, and a deficiency of depth of thadow under the rock. : 271. ENaiisu Lanoscare.—Il, S. Boddington —A pleasing sketeh. ‘Too much “pearly tint” per- vades the foreground ; but the tone of color in the cottage is very good. 277. Frame, conrarntna nine Mtntate —J W.vodge, A —This frame coatains, in our opinion, the best miniatures in the room; a distinction (from our glance at the remainder,) not very difficult of obtaming. 278. Cortacer at THe Srring.—E. White. — The udmigsion of this picture, which is beneath m, is a decided oflence to eood taste. Musina 3 A Seetow.— . Duggan. same remark. 2 CaTneprat Rid Sr. Nrenc SwitzeR.ann.—R. Gignouse Previous to our giving any expression of our opinion of this & chy we would remark that too little attention and en- couragement is here given to water-color branch of the art which has lately obtaty grade of favor and importance in the English aad French schools. The productions of those crle- brated painters in water colors, Burton, Trout, Cat- termole and Copely Fielding, cannot but t i known to every ‘lover of the art, and are charac- terised by atorce and clearness which eannet be excelled, and perhaps not equalled by the best oil ~The ——= Price Two Cents. i ler a knowledge of water eo- lors of the greatest tance to every artist, anc we trust that the pasiodi not distant whea ibe pleasing department of art, will assume in the American scheol, the prominent position it de serves The sketch in question, theugh falling far shortof the excellence of the above celebrated artiew nevertheless possesses considerable merit, and we strongly recommend the artist to persevere in a style in which, Gudging from his present performance,) he promises to assume a very respectable station. $25. .Finw Isuanp, a skeTcH.—J. H. Shegoque. —The colors do not harmonize and look as they had not been waslied in. 326. A Panu in Francr.—E. Didier.—Very ele ver jaded; perhaps the outline is too much de- fined. 324 kMaN—A. A. Weng. ler.—A painting which shows considerable ‘alent although the shadows on the face are too deep and too brown. It is a pity this picture was not vere nished previous to its being sent to the exhibition. 331. Escare or Wuaxron (from the Spy’ F. Hoppin.—This drawing equals any we hi F< pa seen of tae kind, and we are well acquainted wit! the works of the celebrated Flaxman, Ketch, om Pinnelli. The cone etd, execution, and beautifal proportions displayed here, cast the greatest credit on Mr. Hoppin. 333. Fisu, a Stupy rrom Narors—C. E. Weir, —Motion is the only thing required to make these fish look alive. 333. Frame or Sxercurs—S. B. Wavon—Mr Waugh evidently understands ** water colors.” All here is dashed on with a bold and hasty brush. 340. Travian Lanpscarge—J. Shaw, —The figures in this landscape are very good, and, indeed, the same may be said of the whele picture. 352. Doa—T, K. Van Zandt.—We fancy we hear the creaking of a swinging sign, when we look at this dog ; a circumstance we can only ac- count for by the association of ideas. 355. Provipencr, K Thompson.—The coloring of the sky and sea is deeudacheh bad; the remainder, if otherwise supported, would be tole- Portrait ov a Gent . Axrest or AnprE—T. F. Hoppin.—We have to repeat what we said of this gentlem: workmanhip in 331, and that it would be diffiealt to surpass it. 354. Sxetcu or Epwin Forrest—S. Laurence. An excellent sketch, indeed. Mr. Laureuce seems to possess pertect control over his crayon. 8. Snow Scene near Pruaperrnia —G. R. Bontield.—The abundance ot white which is ne- cessarily thrown into a snow scene, is here well managed; the reflection too of the eky on the snow 1s very happy. 403 and 404. Gunivs or Mint anp Genive or AUTUMN '. Crawford, H.—These marbie seh peed are fully equal to any we have seen of thisseulptor, which is, in our opinion, saying a great neal, for them. They are beautifully chaste and well > and are alone well calculated to leave a gi im- pression of this year’s exibition on the mind of the visitor upon his retiring from the rooms. Common Counetl.
