[Correspondence of the Herald.| Wasnineton, 22d May, 1844. Last night there was a large and elegant party at Mrs. Ex-President Madison’s, attended by the Se- cretaries of State, and of the Navy, Postmaster- General, and Attorney General, the late Secretary ot the Treasury, Mr. Spencer, many of the Diplo- matic corps; Mr. and Mrs. Barrow, both fine spe- cimens of Americanism, lately returned from his mission to Portugal ; several members of Congress ; many ladies ; and altogether a very distinguished assemblage, who were elegantly entertained with the best of viands, old wines, the fruits of the sea- son, and all other physical, as well as moral attrac- tions of the excellent hostess. In the course of the evening, the following pi- quant morceau of conversation occurred between the British Minister and the Hon. Charles J. In- gersoll, who with his brother, Joseph R , were also present. A geutleman of Washington, formerly American Secretary of Legation at Mexico, was describing in glowing terms to Mr Pakenham the beauty of a lady of New York, who, he said, was one of the mostaplendid women he had ever seen—so much so that she reminded him of whet he si da queen might or ought to be. “She mi one think,” said he, “ofsuch a magnificent creature as Queen Zenobia.” “But,” said Mr. C. J. Ingersoll, “What wae her Majesty, Queen Zenobia’s, color ¢ Might it not have been the -ubject of an animated correspondence between Mr. Pakenham and Mr. Calhoun Y” “Yes,” rejoined Mr. Packenham, ad- dressing himself to Mr. Ingersoll, ‘and Jom per haps, would have written a report uponit.” Pre sently after, his Excellency added, ‘*You bore very hard upon us in that Report.” “Oh, no,” said Mr. Ingersoll, ‘you must not think go.” ‘*Yes you did,” repeated Mr. Pakenham, “‘you bore very hard upon us ;” and then, according to our report ot the conversation, it ended, His Excellency, long accustomed to manage the Mexicans, is said to be very free in his colloquial commentaries upon the doings and sayings of mem- bers of the Cabinetand members of Congress. He may be a very profound diplomatist, but to all ex- terior appearances bothjin person, and on paper, he is any thing else. It is reported—and is very probably true—that the Pennsylvania delegation will feel constrained, on the ground of their instructions alone, to vote for Mr. Van Buren on the first ballot; but, should a two third vote be required, it is hardly possible for Mr. Van Buren to get the nomination on first ballot, and in that event the Pennsylvania delega- tion will vote against him, being satisfied that his case is utterly hopeless in their State, which with any new man could be easily carried. The city is swarming with delegates. 'S. B. P. 8. A delegate who has just arrived in the city came directly by the way of Nashville, where he called on Gen. Jackson. He says that in the course of his conversation with the Old Hero, he express- edgto him his embarrassment as to the vote, he should give at the Baltimore Convention, in conse- quence of Van Buren’s opposition to Annexation. Hie says that Gen. Jackson, lifting his long skinny finger, replied most emphatically—‘* You must for- sake your friend, and cling to your cbuairy i There is still another letter in town from Old Hickory, intended for publication, and which will be published in the course of two days. he Nashville Union, Gen. Jackson’s organ, is out strong against both Kenton and Van Buren. It has caused much talk here at Washington. 8. B. Wasuinaton, 22d May, 1844. Mr Cuoate finished one of his poetical anti-war speeches to-day in Secret Session, before the Senate. Mr. McDuffie is expected to follow. So far as one can judge the tide of opposition seems to set still stronger to-day against Van Bu- ren than it has done. No farther news to-night. S.B. TWENTY-EIGHTH CONGRESS. FIRST SESSION. Senate.
