Ie must have been very seriously injured. We have frequently determined to call the atten- tion of the authorities, to the great annoyance and danger to which the citizens are subjected in all cases of alterations, repaira, or erecting new build- ings in our streets. The present instance, in which an individual has been seriously, it may be fatally, injured, is a fair epeciimen of the manner in which this business isconducted. Were we bave the en- tire sidewalk opposite three or four dwellings torn up, and obstructed by lumber, and bricks and mor- tar, obliging the crowds of passengers along this great thoroughiare of the city to pass into the centre of the filthy street, where they are every moment liable to be rode over by the vehicles ot all descrip- tions constantly passing up and down. But this is not all, for the workmen have beenjfor eeveral days hurling the stones, and wood-work of the houses which they are taking down, almost at random cn the sidewalk, so that it has been quite miraculous that numbers have not shared the fate of the gen- tleman who was nearly killed yesterday. We trust that the Mayor will immediately direct his attention to this most dangerous nuisance. It is one which can be very readily prevented in future. In all those cases of erecting new houses, or re- pairing or altering old ones, in Broadway, or any other street, the proprietors should be required to board in about two feet of the sidewalk, leaving the remaining portion altogether unobstructed, or mak- ing proper precaution and care on the part of the workinen imperative. It is really too bad that the comfort and convenience of the citizens should be so materially interfered with for weeks together, as they now are in several parts of Broadway and many other streets. At all events, if the sidewalk must be altogether given up, some sort of security should be afforded, that the skulls of the passers-by be not dashed to pieces.
