BY THE SOUTHERN MAIL Washingto [Correspondence of the Herald.) Wasnincton, May 13th, 1844. The aceounts from the Seuth represent the ex. eitement as having increased to such an extent in favor of annexation, that the opinion is strongly prevuiling here, that the Senate, (whig,) will not dare to reject the Treaty. They fear that Van Bu- ten will be dropped—an annexation candidate se- Jected by the democratic party, and Clay be beaten by an overwhelming majority. Jt is said—and 1s probably true—that S. S. Prentiss has come out against Clay on the ground of his opposition to An- mexation. Our accounts from North and East also epresent the popular feeling in favor of annexation as decidedly upon the increaee. ‘This is the day the House fixed upon to decide the question of adjournment. There is great dif- ference of opinion prevailing even among the de- mocrats. Some want to adjourn on the 27th May inst., among whom are Cave Johnson, and many other western members, and others. Others waet the 10th or 17th of June, among whom are many of the southern members, and others. Before this fetter is closed their vote will have decided the question. There is a violent struggle now (12 m ) going on in the House upon these pointe. It is reported that Clay now regrets having writ- ten his letter against annexation. I should not be at all surprised if both the Globe and Van Buren were to come out in favor of an- mexation. I have heard the calcul peatedly made within the past week, by which it is proved that out ot 73 delegates south of Mason's and Dixon’s line, G4 of them are opposed to Van Buren. Other cal- yal gay that out of twenty-six he can only get “Halt past 12.—The Honse hes jnst passed the re- Bolution to adjourn on the 17th June—L14 to BS. It remains to be een whether the Seaate will concur in the resolution, Itcan amend either to an ear- Mier or a laterday. ‘The probabability, however, is, that the House will not concur in an earlier day than the 17th of June. How much tater bot Houses will sit, Heaven only knows. Should it become necessary, in consejuence of further news either from Mexico or elsewhere, for Congress to act upon the question of annexation either as a treaty ora reselution, then the President may call Congress together again immediately after their ad. journment. This | suppose (2) would give them all their mileage, even though they should not leave Washington. 8. B. Wastiseton, May 18, 1844. The Senate passed Mr. Bayard’s Naval bill to- day. 4 Ic then went into executive session, and fora long time discusced the question of debating the treaty in open session, but came to no conclusion. ‘The prebabiliiy is, that the treaty will be discussed Mm catensg ‘There is a ramor in town tes been nomated Secretary of the ‘Treasury Ttis not tue, noris it likely to be, for the best of all reasone, he *s the President's ft. icad. Were he his enemy, he might stand a good chance, The whigs of the Senate are very evidently softened down in relation to reiecting the treaty. They are afraid Mr. Clay left the city this P.M, at 4 o’clock, for Ashlana, Mr. Woodbury has been written to from Prince William County, Virginia, to learn his views in re Mation to annexation. This is with reference to his position on a Presidential ticket. So L infer fi the fact that they say they do not desire his on any other subject, as they are well known. Woodbury will reply at length, and from his deep research on this question, and his grest ability, ii reply will be looked for with peculiar interest. t is confidently asserted—and I attach some credit thereto—that t.e President will in about ten days send ia a joint resolution, or something to that eflect, annexing Texas You rest assured Congress will adjourn on the 4th March next. 3. Belere it was taken up, he moved a call of the House. The roll was called, and 195 members answered to their names. : x All turther proceedings, as usual, in this farce were then suspended. Mr. Cave Jounsox then moved to postpone the further consideration of the business relating to the District of Columbia until the resolution of the Senate for adjourning on the 271 of May, should be considered. On this the ayes and noes were culled, and re- sulted, ayes 137, noes 60. ‘The joint resolution passed by the Senate for the adjournment of Congress on the 27th of May, was then read. ; Mr. C. J. Ivcensort said he wished to say a few words as to why he was opposed to adjourning so early as the 27h inst. Mr. Cave Jounson was going on to show why the House shou!d adjourn— Incensort—l wish to ask very respectfully of my frend from Tenn: , it ke intends first to make 4 speech, and then to call the previous question, to pert any body else from speaking. Mr Hovsroy then moved to strike out the 27th of May, und insert the 17th of June, and on this 1 demand the previous question. —(Much laughter and cries of “Oh! oh! oh!) Mr. Incerso.t, moved an amendment to post- pone the question. — (Cries of “ Oh no.’) Mr. Hovston said, he would not abandon the ground he had got.
