that [know it to be a Protestant Church. The Church of Cranmer, Linmer, and a host of glorious-martyrs, The Bible, one of the speakers said, before the church, I eay amen to that, (Ap- plause ) One of the gentlemen has well said that the Relormation was but the resurrection of the Bible. Bor [ask what church was it that dressed that risen body in such a beautiful attire that it has commanded the admiration of the world? Was it not the Protestant Church? (Great Applause.) The great quesuon of the day is—shall the Bible be continued in our schools? The southern mail brought intelligence of the deep interest felt in that by our people. [Ifthe country became Roman Catholic they would barn the Bible; and while he had no ob- jection to their enjoying the blessings of liberty in this Lynd ; he would not suffer them to take away the Bile, it was their safeguard and they would cliog to it. He did not come there to talk of ver- sions of the Bible; it. was their Bible—the Bible of their ancestors, and they had studied and would cling to it, and it should be the Bible of their children. | ts This question originiated here, and so 1 may per- haps be indulged in stating the origin and progress ot the contest for the Bible in the schools. Where- ever the opposition is made,it is true it assumes the same character—whether in Philadelphia, in Bal- timore, or New-York. I hope we are prepared to discuss this question, and to abide by our decision in allcireun stances. Mr K. then went into a te- dious and characteristically dull account of the controversy respecting the use of the Protestant Bible in the Common Schools, and after a long and common place tirade against Popery—Papists—ihe Pope—and the Devil, sat down arnid great applause. Mr Freiinauvysen in seconding the resolution, asked what were the Common Schools of the country? They were intended for the introduction of the common word. God had protected the country and the old American Congress was a Bi- ble Congress. Washington was a Bible General, and while the American people lived by the Bible, they would die for the Bible. (Tremendous plause.) The meeting then passed the Fourth Re- solut ou: Resolved, That the Binzx, from its origin, purity, and simplicity of style, is a book peculiarly appropriate for use in common schools, and cannot be excluded from them without hazard both to our civil and religious liber- ties. The Rev. Geo. W. Biacpen, of Boston, Mass., in proposing the last resolution came forward and said—It has just been spoken by the law in the voce of two of is mos! distingnished members that this cause is in accordance with its true principles and pursuits, and I do hope that the gospel, though a very humble member of it, will be allowed by my voice, to make itself heard in joining in the ery of “We won't give up the Bible” It may be thus seen that the law and the gospel join in this ery, and that we will give up our country and all, but we won't give up the Bible. This most holy book is adupted to all classes, from the highest to the lowest, aud when our schools are without it, how can we be said to carry out one of its divine com- mands, which sa\s— Go ye and preach the gos- pel to every per on;” it was to aid in carrying out Ap- | Jiee, too, looked young le acquisition to t he procee | one—every family on the face of the earth—like he family of Bethany, whom Christ delighted to visit—one of brotherhood, peace, love and joy. There are many countries abroad open to our exertions—there was China, Turkey, Russia, Greece, Italy Utalian States, and various other parts. Where knowledge exists, there should it be exer- cised, and it is only by exercising this knowledge that we can show to the world what we desire, and while we existed and thus acted, we are certain of doing good in carrying out the words of the reso-, lution. This Society has not been unmindful of its duty in this respect, was evident from the list of missionaries in foreign parts, but yet much remains to be done. This is a very peculiar crisis, and the facilities tor sending missionaries to these countries is now greater than ever, and we should avail our- selves of it, and it we fail in doing so, we tail in doing our duty. The time was when to do it would endanger life; indeed, in our own times, I have had a circumstance related to me of a child of Romau Catholic parents, who persisted in reading the scrip- tures, and whose father, when informed of the cir- cumstance by its mother, atthe dead hour of the night, took the child out of bed and severely beat it. It was a grand principle of knowledge that to Know good and notto do it, was to commit sin: and we showed the estimate cf our value of the scriptures by the amount of our exertions in our endeavors to promulgate it. This was the intrin- sic valne of the book. It is said that in common danger meu link together with greater cordial perhaps it was this that brought so many tog: of different secis and parties on this oceasion Bible is the great source of every good, and w endeavor to demonstrate our ble into th of all by such means and ocea- sions as atpresent offers “All ean joiuin this grand cause—like the granite which composes the ever. lasting hills, as beautifully menti ned by one of the previous speakers, the Bibie becomes the founda- tion and topmost stone of the grandest of the Cre: tor's works. When the meeting separated, several of the ladies who were in the vicinity of the miserable, wretch- ed, contemptible corner of the platform where the reporters sat, and could scarcely hear a word, ex pr_ssed their warm displeasure at the discourtesy with which they themselves had been treated—as well as the press—and one lady remarked to one of the reporters, “that she was an old contributor, but | would not give a dollar from the treatment the la- dies in general had received.” Og The reporters of the city press are to blame for not taking proper measures to insure for them- selves the ordinary courtesies of society. Meeting In Behalf ot the A. B.C. F. M. at the Broadway Tabernacle, May 10. The President of the Board took the Chair, at 10 o’clock, A. M. yesterday. President Mr. Far- LINGMUYSEN. Rev. Dr. Wicorr opened with prayer. An ab- stract of the operations of the Board was read, showing that the Indian tribes had been vastly benefitted by the society. A press was establish@! amongst the Cherokees and the Choctaws, and they were gradually rising in the scale of civiliza- tion. This presented contrast to the Romish Mission, and Temperance had done much in the elevation of the social condition of the Indians. China had been much improved by the operations of the society. The Sandwich Islands, Ceylon, Mahratta, (in Bombay) the Nestorians of Persia, Greece, all the Oriental Nations, Turkey, Con- stantinople, Armenia, all were benefitted by the society. Twenty-three additional missionaries had been appointed in Asia. Rev. Dr. Taxtor, of New Jersey, here came forward, and offered the following resolution in support of the objects of the Society: Resolved, ‘That indispensable obligations are the highest encouragement combined to urge Chris- tians to untiring efforts to extend the gospel through: out the world. Jr. AnmstRONG read a letter from Mr. Gradall, missionary at Constantinople, dated March 7, which had been received buta few days since, giving a fu- vorable account of the state of the missionary cause at that place, and calling for more support aud assistance. The Rey. EN. Kink, of Boston, came forward, and observed that it was said that these American meetings were losing their interest, and it wus an important fact, if true, and there might be many reasons to account for it. The citizens did not think them worthy of attendance, from the prosy character of the speeches delivered, and there would be a falling off unless ministers of very high character attended them aad took part in their pro- ceedings. He dound many come to them with anything but a proper spirit. These meetings should be revivals of religion. These documents appeared to be drawn up more in the style of ministers of the law than by ministers of the gospel, and savored strong of filthy lucre and worldly influence. The extracts show. ing that all power and direction was, or were, to be invested in the missionaries, and no doubt the pro- perty also, and this the speaker observed was all done from the love of Christ, and from their great interest in the souls of men, and this claim was made upon them for the great love they bore the Lord of Glory, and those who were desirous of Heaven would respond to the call Dr. Epwarps announced there would be a Sab- bath day meeting in that place of worship on Sun day evening next, when the Rey.
