MOST IMPORTANT. 1 have verified the information I sent you last Mr. Ritchie has written to one or more ect of the unfavorable result of the late elections here, that Mr. Van Buren cannot carry Virginia, He Those whom I have consulted men of great this as Mosr im- decisive asto the fate of vORTANT, and, in fact, Van Buren. I regret that you seem to regard me as under the nfluence of mnpeindl led political hacks, who Te is not so. I tell you the these. Mr. Ritchie has abused me for stating these facts, and you seem to justify him in doing it. He 18 new converted to the same views, and joins the company of those “democrats of high standing” of whom I spoke, who think Mr. Buren inavailable, and that another candidate must I desire that justice may be done me. Tagain assure you that | have made sure my ground, and that you cannot attach too much im- portance to these movements—tie result of which, itis believed here, must lead to the final selection of another candidate. It is reported that Mr. Buchanan is coming out in a letter in faxou of annexation. Two P. M.—It is reported about town that Spen- cer’s nomination to Russia wes sent into the Se- nate on yesterday. It is not true. tis also reported that Mr. Calhoun has sent in I know not whether it is true or It is not true. Mr. Tyler will be a candidate forthe Presidency any ‘contingency, except his death per se— whether his own Convention nominate him or not. Doubts are expressed whether Spencer’s ag of resignation has yet gone in. ‘Wasuinaton, May 1, 1844. It is now twenty-five minutes past five o’clock. The cars at this mement are at the junction twen- ty-two miles distant on their way from Baltimore to Washington. This fact we learn by Professor Morse’s wonderful Telegraph, now in full opera- tion for the above distance of 22 miles. By this Telegraph we also learn that Mr Clay has been this day nominated for President, and Mr. Fre- linghuysen of N. J. for Vice President. Professor Morse has politely given mea part of the paper on which the news is contained, which I send you. It contains the word ‘ Frelinghuysen,” with the (g) left out through haste, and was written with a pen twenty-two miles long. by this wonderful invention and achievement, ance is literally annihilated. The fluid travers- es the whole 22 miles and back again—making 44 miles—in no perceptible part of a second of time. People first. carried news on foot, then on heavy wagons, or in schooners—next came steamboats— then railroads—speed increasing all the while in geometrical progression, Now the news is trans- mitted by lightning, and space is no longer account- ed. There is, therefore, now nothing left for in- vention to achieve, butto discover news betore it akes place. To this, attention will now be exclu- sively directed. Every body voting the whig ticket has gone to Baltimore to-day, and from that quarter you will get all your news. 8. TWENTY-KIGHTH CONGRESS. FIRST SESSION. Senate. Wasuineton, May 1, 1844. A resolution was passed to take the tariff bili out of committee of the whole on Wednesday next.— The final vote on that question will therefore, I suppose, be taken on the bill within a day or two afterwards. The debate on the bill then proceeded. No inte- restor mnORIRnCg e attached to the speeches. fcg- The excitement in Baltimore, consequent upon the assembling of the whig conventions, con- tinued without abatement on Wednesday night and yesterday morning. Great preparations were mak- ing for the grand procession of delegates to the Whig Young Men’s Ratification Convention which was to come off yesterday. We shal! doubtless receive a full description of the procession, the proceedings of the mass convention, and all the interesting incidents of the day, in time for our Evening edition this afternoon. Virainta ELxction.—We have no further returns worthy of note. The whigs continue to elaim the State ; but the democrats have not yet given up the hope that it has been preserved to themselves. Danie, Wesster.—We are exceedingly gratified to be able to state that this distinguished statesman is expected to address the Convention of Ratification to- day. The Committee charged with the duty of inviting the eminent members ofthe Whig party supposed, as we are informed, that they would be deficient in their’ dut they had failed specially to invite to this great quthetlog of the Whigs, one whose name is #0 i rably connect ed with the honor and fame of his country.—Baltimore American, May 2.
