[Correspoudene of the Heral'.J Wasninoron, 29th April, 1844. All Washington is in a state of ferment and ex- citement—Clay’s letter—Van Buren’s letter—Pre- sident Tyler’s letter—tie treaty of annexati and the late Virginia election. I have just seen a letter trom agentleman in Vir- ginia, from which! learn that the election has gone very decidedly against the democrats. It is agreed on all sides that their House of Delegates will have awhig majority, while the Senate will be demo- cratic ; some accounts state it will have a majority of ten. The great undecided question now is, which party will have the majority on joint ballot— which elects a Senator in place of Rives. The letters of Clay and Van Buren excite a deep feeling of exasperation in the South, and large sec- tons of the West and the South-West. Now that Virginia has gone against Van Buren, the opimions at Washington are fully settled that he must be defeated. Some of his best friends have said that he cannot get a solitary vote in the Union. Others say they willbet against his getting three States. There is an immense deal of talk here about other candidates who can satisfy the South and West. On this subject opinions are in a state of chaos. It seems to be also agreed upon here, pretty gene- rally, that the treaty of annexation cannot pase-—not nie ‘the consent of Mexico shall have been oltain- e Senators appear highly indignant what the "Treaty should have been published. No one at Washing- ton has the 8 ightest idea or suspicion how it got out. The Senate will probably investigate matter very rigidly, as the Intelligencer casis the blame on them.
