, Greve Histronic Triumpx.—A visit to the Chatham alone can convince the public of the suc- -essful career which the Chatham has run for some time past. Sunday, April 14—6 P. M. ‘The operations in the stock market during the past week exhibit same improvement over those of the week pre- vious. The money market is not quite so easy as we have noticed for sometime past, and the wants from all classes are daily increasing. This has created a slight advance in the price for money. We can expect during the present week quite an impetus to business. The ca- nals open on Thursday, the 18th inst., immediately after which produce will comein very abundantly. This will undoubtedly create an additional demand for money, which, if to a great extent, may carry up the rate to the extreme legal standard. The employment of money in the regular course of trade produces activity and pros- perity among all classes, Jt creates a natural state of things, and af carried on legitimately will improve al! departments of business without running into specula tion, Capital can always be employed in actnal business operations in this country, profitably and safely. So long as it is confined to the proper channels, business must gradually improve, but the moment it leaves these chan- nels, and runs into speculation, an unnatural state exists which invariably results in bankruptcy and ruin. The low rates that have ruled for money during the past year, and(the great abundance of capital afloat, has been an in- ducement for many to enter speculations in whatever came up of aright nature. The result of all these move- ments clearly shaw tho policy of leaving the currency to regulate itself, All the schemes of politicians, all the meusures proposed by the wisest men of both parties, and all the Notional Banks and Sub-Treasuries in the world, could not have brought into existence a sounder, safer, or better regulated currency than we have at this mo ment. This state of things has produced itself. ‘he evil hhs generated its own remedy. The present system of banking, with all its imperfec- tions, is far superior to any previous one. There appears to be in istence a controlling power over the bank- ing institutions of the country superior to any that ever preceded it. ‘That power is the will of the people. Public opinion has so strongly set against any expansion of paper money—the voice of the masses is so loud a thecreation of any greater banking privileges than arc already in existence, that we have great hope and faith in the permanency of the present state of financial affairs. — Itseems to be impossible to get up any great speculative movement. The sudden explosion of those commenced is evidence of the fact. This speaks volumes in favor of the present stateof thecurrency. The cause of the failure of all the illegitimate transactions in business can be mainly attributed to the complete distribution of capital through out the mercantile community. There cannot be cent ed sufficient capital to carry on immense speculation: Monopoly cannot exist without the means to sustain it- set. The tremendous speculations of 1936, 1537 and ’38, were carried out on a magnificent scale, in consequence of the immense amount of capital at the command of those engaged in the mbble. Their resources were unlimited their credit unbounded, and they advanced to any extent.’ The stock market presents the usual fluctuations, but within a few days prices have been on the advance. Penn, sylvania 5's exhibit a falling off of several percent. All confidence in the action of the Legislature of that State is Jost, and an adjournment without having passed a bill for the relief of the public creditors would undoubtedly run down the stock of the State to a very low point. There does not appear visible in the two Houses of the Pennsyl- vania Legislature the slightest particle of a disposition to meet the subject of State indebteness boldly and openly; but what does appear very plain, is a disposition to evade every proposition touching the State debt, and to throw obstructions in the way of every just measure promising relief to the many anxiously waiting their movements. The London Money Market continued very easy and the rate of interest very low. ‘The cotton markets were very inactive, prices stea- ly, but not very firm. ‘The commercial intelligence ge- neraily is not unfavorable. There was so little doing in matters connected with this country, that it is impos- possible to predict the tenor of further advices, perience considerable depression from this news, but their recovery will be gradual and permanent. The re. sult of the year’s sales will undoubtedly be more profita. ble to the country at large than if speculations were car- ried to a great extent. The spinners of Manchester and Lancashire, have, probably, with the aid of London Bankers, succeeded in putting down prices to a level that meets their views, as they have since been in the market large purchasers, A demand for consumption will take out of the market the large stock and do more to reduce the supplies than all the speculation the whole capital of Europe could produce. This will eventually benefit prices, and the net value of the crop will no doubt reach an amount as large as would be realised by the greatest fluctuations, Our locul trade is rapidly improving. ‘The business portion of our city exhibits great activity. Country mer. chants ere swarming into this market. ‘The recent heavy importations of foreign goods and the competition that among our dry goods merchants, enable merchants from all parts to lay in their stocks of these goods more profitably inthis than in any other city in the Union. The great numbers of sonthern and western dealers that visit this city, twice or thrice annually, have given our dry goods merchants the control of this trade, which cannot be wrested from them, unless by the injudicious managemen; of their own business. The rivalry existing between the jobbers particularly is destructive of the regular laws of trade. It leads to too great an extension of trade, to an expansion of credits, and to the usual result of these movements. It is the first great cause of the bank, ruptey and ruin that almost periodically overtakes this class of the mercantile community. This trade So far it has been conducted on sound legitimate principies. How long it will coatinue so, no one can tell. ‘A few seasons will doubtless suffice to produce over. trading. The commercial classes cannot learn by experi- ence. <A short period of prosperity obliterates all recollec. tion of past troubles, and the same scenes are acted over and over without teaching those engaged a few lessons that would be of value in after years. SSE Washington, (Correspondence of the Herald.) et f Wasuinorox, April 13, 1844. hope in “ie course of the day to obtain an au- thentic statement of the terms of the new Texas treaty—! have not been able at this hour (12 M.) to send you any terms on which you can rely— although it would be easy for me to send you the rumors in circulation as truth One thing I can state as fact, that the treaty has been formed on the most liberal and conciliatory principles towards all parties. It will Prove to be as unexceptionable in its terms and conditions as the nature of the ease will possibly admit. Another important fact which I can state on au- thority is, that the day the treaty goes before the Senate, the Globe will come out decide ledly, boldly and strongly in favor of annexation. It would have done so some weeks ago had not Mr. Blair been disabled from writing by his sickness. He was in- jured on board the Princeton in his head—or rather the drum of his ear—and fears are entertained that the hearing may be permanently injured. Hig head has been muck swollen, and suppuration has taken place two or threetimes. But, although Mr. Rives doesnot labor much in the editorial depart. ment, yet if Mr. Blair sh be unable to write, he will take hold of the peu editorial, and go the whole figure for Texas. Indeed, trom the liberate ty and expansion of Mr. Rives’ Views, | would nor be surprised if he were willing to extend the differ- ent feathers of his wings not only over ‘Texas, but also over Canada, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick. and some of his tail all North and South America, feathers even over Ireland, I have it on very good authorit H.
