Cause for alarm to many who anticipate another season vf overtrading and extravagance. Since the first of Janu- try, 1844, our imports have been large, but we already perceive evidences of a falling off. The Liverpool packet ship Queen of the West, just arrived, having left Liver- pool on the 6th of March, a period of heavy shipments, when trade is Unusually active, brings but very few dry goods, compared with the cargoesthat urrived earlier in the season. The manufacturers of Great Britain are turn- ing their attention more to the manufacture of goods adapted to other markets. The East India markets have particularly engaged their attention :— Exports or Corton Manvractures anv Corron Yarn, From Great Britain, ron Eicur Years. Declared value of Declared value of Cotton Manuf, Cotton Yarn. « -£18,511,632 tee 13,640,185 16,719,857 17,692,182 . 17,567,310, 16,232,510 . 13,910 084 A 16,248,769 ‘This takes in the whole time, from the year of immense imports into this country down tothe Ist of the present year. The last year, 1843, reaches within £2,309,000 of the heaviest year of exports of these manufactures from Great Britain, This is very good evidence in favor of believing that other markets have been made avail" able for this description of British products. The im- ports from Great Britain into the United States have fallen off immensely, while the exports of that country, with the exception of the years 1837 and 1842, varied but very little, From a large importer of cotton manufac- tures frum Europe in 1836, we have in 1544 become a very large exporter of the same descriptions of goods. — We have exported goods to their own market, similar to those we received from them eight or ten years ogo. ‘This cannot be entirely attributed to the operation of our tariff’ laws, for during the period ullnded to we have passed through ail grades of tariffs, from a scale averaging twenty per cent, to that averaging forty, In 1842, during the lowest range of the compromise act, our imports of cotton manufactures from foreign countries were less than in 1831, 1836 and 1939, when the scale ruled very high This shows the rate of duty had very litile influence on the extent of the importations. Judging from the late falling off in the imports, and the recent advices from the principal manufacturing districts of Great Britain, we are of the opinion that the total importations of foreign manu- fac'ured cotton goods for 1844 will fall below that of many previous years, Our local manufacturers are unusually active. We learn that yery heavy orders have lately been from the East India markets. This, with the ac- e demand for home consumption, will keep our manu- facturers very busy through the season, and do more to advance and establish their prosperity than the most pro- tective tariff Congress could possibly grant. Our trade for articles of domestic manufacture with most foreign countries is yearly advancing, and a few years will suitice to place us so far ahead of other nations in supplying goods of this description, thatwe shall require no aid from government or any other source. Our trade with South America is gradualiy increasing. We annex the importation of cotton goods into Rio Janeiro for four years. The total yearly importation of manufactured cottons, of all descriptions, since 1839 amounted to re~ spectively, 29,605, 36,667, 22,492, 23,603 packages, show. ing an increase in 1843 upon 1842, of 5 per cent ; it is however probable that there was no increase in value, for more than the excess of packages, was received from the United States, aa will be seen by the following statement of imports :— Imvonts or Manuracturep Corton into Rio Jane no, FoR Four Yeans, ‘Packages. 1840, 1841. 1842, 1813, 20,828 24.968 M009 4,455 169 it 5337 7,358 1,618 526 1,317 1,109 853 OL 678 om I: will be seen that the imports from Great Britain have fallen off, while those from the United States have in. creased, Old Stock Exchange, $2000 U S 10 3544 14000 810 35; 4000 do 4 1000 NY State 7's, 748 0 3, do, Wis 23 do 20 35: vo | S's, Ot 106' 5 Merch’s Fire Ing oy Indiana bds t5' 3750 NH & Hartford RR 76% do, 3 70 Aub & tiweh 10386 Obio 's,°60 9156 75 Mohawk 1.46 do 91% 100 do JW do 1% 40 do 21000 do nw 9388 75 Nor & Wore tooo do. bio 918% 125° do ‘9000 Kentucky 6's we 40 do 10000 do 30 10134 285 do 4000 do large bds 100" 925 do. 1000 Winois spel eds 40, 490 do 7000 do. 40% 150 do 5000 Penna o's bs0 67" 125d 15000 do Lio 67 100 do 500 do 67 100 Long Island RR 109 do stw 67 150 do. smo do 160 6634 100 do 1000 do. 30 66% 100 40 shes Bi StateNY — 8534 100 38 Kentucky Bk 73 109 300 Farmers’ Trust 40100 30 do s10 4050 Pat bo do b30 4034 100 200 do 39) New Stock Exchange. $1000 Ohio 6's, ’60 9134 50shas Vicksburg Bk 8 1000 do ay 25 Harlem sth 65 2000 do 810 9134 150 0, 83 65g 1609 do 815 94.4 175 Nor & Wore b3 41} 4000) Ky 6, 90 yen 100% do 824i 1000 Lfinois bs sof do 342 2000 do 43.39% 50 do 42 1000 do 539 394g 50 do Lew 4234 1000 do 39% bv = do sib 42 25s0as Farmers’ Lu 815 39% 100 co snw 42% 2) Cauton Co b3o) 50 do b3 4234 Brora bio 35% 2 do 2 30) db bw 36 5 do 83 42 ‘Mohawk RR baw 60% 100 do btw 4234 Vichsourg Bk 84 25 do 1304 5 do 8 2 do 830 42 do 8% 2% do $10 43) wy do 8425 do 630 42 5) do #10 8% 23900 do ald 42h 10 do 3 8: State of Trade. Washington, , (Correspondence of the Herald.) Wasninoton, 9th April, 1844. Important News. o The Hon. Winutam R. Kina, present United States Senator from Alabama has been this day nominated by President Tyler, and confirmed by the Senate, Minister Plenipotentiary to France, and his Excelleney Wisoy Swannon, the present Governor of Ohio, some time since nominated Mi- nister Plenipotentiary to Mexico by the President, has also been thisday confirmed by the Senate. As soon as Mr. Berrien had finished his speech the Senate went into Executive Session, and con- firmed both of those gentlemen in about three minutes, viva voce, nemine contradicente. Mr, King, of course, withdrew from the Senate before the subject was taken up. Mr. King isa single man, polite and agreeable in his manners, and no doubt this appointment will be peculiarly acceptable to him, the more especial- lv as his chances for the Vice Presidency uader Mr. Van Buren, if not absolutely diminishing, were in NO Wise increased by the competition of Messrs. Polk, Stevenson, and Dick Johnson. In this ap- | Polmtment Mr. King has certainly distanced two of the three gentlemen above named. Mr. Bernsen made a rather remarkable epeeeh | to-day—a strong, high tariff, protective speech— | particular laudatory of the tariff of °42, against which he then voted, although by some astonishing mesmeric somerset, he now admires it. Moreover, you will recollect, that itis but a few years since Mr. Berrien presided at a free trade convention in Pennsylvania. Mr. Berrien strongly advocated to-day the estab- lishment of manufactures in the Southern States. Ile enumerated quite a large number already estab- lished in South Carolina, Georgia, and ‘Alabetna— all of which are carried en with English eapital, and by English operatives—againet “dependence upon whom he declaimed with much eloquence in another part of his spee But his colleague, Judge Colquitt (a Democrat) has the fleor to-morrow, in reply to him, and if Mr. Berrien does not find himself anatomically dissect ed, and disagreeably ‘used up,” Mr. Colquitt’s friends will be disappointed. 8.
