1043. Passengers fe Srlaht, Ge. « Sao Su $74,150 $100,261 ‘The immense amount of capital both in this country » # andin Europe, now laying idle, for the want of some pro fitable mode of investment, probably will find an outlet in Creating some extensive speculation in several of the sta- ple articles of trade. In consequence of the uncertainty that surroundajstock operations, from the undecided state ofonr foreign affairs, capital is gradually leaving such in- vestments, and must accumulate at certain points, unless some method is adopted to give it employment. We al- realy perceive indications of a disposition to get up spec- ulations in Europe. Coffee, rice, pepper and sugar have to acertainextent, been influenced by large operatiuns of ahighly speculative character. We have the expe- rience of former year :, in sustaining usin these assertions regarding the employment of capital. Men of means will not allow their resources to lay idle, and in the absence of safe investments, they will naturally enter those, involy ing more danger, possessing more chances for large pro_ fits. Besides the articles above enumerated subject to a speculative movement, we can also add Tea. The stocks of Tea and Coffee in Europe are as large as usual and the demand for consumption has heretofore been very regu- lar and corresponding with the supply. ‘Srocks or Tea ano Correm tn Lonnon, Fro Ist, ron sme Tuan. 1843. The result has been as every one might have anticipated. Since the ar- rival of the Caledonia, the operations in coffee in the prin, cipal markets of this country have been very heavy, most of which were for export to Europe. At Baltimore Rio offve hag advanced } to a 4 cent per Ib., and sales for the week reached 900) bags, a portion for shipment. About 2,00" bags St. Domingo were also taken for export. Sales in this market and at Boston, have also been made at an advance, and for export to. Europe. ‘Phe stock of Coffee now in this market is estimated as follow: St Domings bags 7,000 ce eee do 12,500 Sumatra,......do 3,000 Cuba. esse do 2,000 Manilla... . do 450 Porto Riso, 126 Total stock. ........se..00.0+. bags 63,976 Inport axp Exrort of Corres, Quantity Consumen, Pea: aye Vauon ie Import ‘onsumption, Value oj Pounds. New Ok.ean —For the better qualities prices are more steadily maintained than for the lower de- scriptions, not because of any demand there is for them, but owing to their being relatively scarcer, and to the probability of their continuing so, aa the receipts now are ima great measure composed of the low sorts. Buyers for England continue to be the principal operators, but as the demand not only for that conntry, but elsewhere, is so limited, and prices so unsatisfactory, there are further shipments being made in consequence on home account. ‘The sales of the week amount to 18,400 bales, of which 6,800 were sold during the last three days. FURTHER INTELLIGENCE ON THE ANNEXATION OF TEXAS TO THE U. STATES. We have received from our private correspond- ent further intelhgence from Washington by last night’s mail, of a very important character relative to the Texas negociation. Mr. Calhoun, who is not accompanied by his family, but only a son, had an interview ot full two hours with the President en Saturday morning. The subject of conversation was the Texas and Oregon questions—but we are not authorized to give any further intimations of the matter. It is understood, however, that in his reply to the au- thorities at Charleston, S. C., on his journey north, Mr. Calhoun stated that the Texas and Oregon questions were the most important that ever had been before the people of the United States, and of course, every one might draw an inference, that all the present party arrangements would be dis- solved or be broken up before them. Mr. Calhoun is undoubtedly the ablest, the purest man that ever was in the State Depart- ment, and his ambition will be to surpass Daniel Webster in every element of greatness during his brief sojourn at the capitol. We have every reason to believe that under the premiership of Calhoun, Texas will be re-annexed to the Union, and all the Oregon territory retained, without any breaking of the peace or any approach to war with any country. He will never give up a part of the United States territory to get the remainder, as was done inthe Ashburton negociation. Mr. Calhoun will be the master-spirit of the government, while he is a member of it, and he willtwield a moral force over the “‘fieree democracie” that will asto- nish the Lindenwold sage as well as ‘‘old bullion,” of Missouri. Genera! Henderson, the new Texan plenipoten- tiary, has full powers to bring the annexation be- fore our Congress, in any way he chooses, either by resolution or by treaty. If the mode of admis- sion by Treaty should be adopted by our govern- meat, a mass of facts and reasons will be placed con- fidentially before the Senate, that is supposed will be sufficient to produce an almost wnanimous vote in favor of the treaty. These facts and reasons are supposed to be the confidential correspondence of the British agents with the Texan government, in which certain singular overtures are made by the former power to the latter, in which Captain Elliot will cut a figure. It is also denied that Mr. Paken- ham, the British minister has made any disclosure of the intentions of England upon Texas. One of the terms of annexation will probably be some provision for the public debt of Texas, which now amounts to nearly $8,000,000, partly owned in England and the United States. But in requital for this assumption, a territory in public lands will be given to the United States, more than ten times the value of the debt. Another veryimportant fact we learn, Texas has territory enough to make two or three free States, as well as the like number of slave States. By arranging the terms of the annexation on this principle, the jealousy arising from the increase of Stave States will be effectually silenced. The relative power and influence of the Union, as re- gards slavery, will remain as it now exists. Another point—many fear that Mexico would declare war if the admission takes place. In- deed Mexico has said as much—but those who know Mexico state, that the threat is a mere bru- tum fulmen—it will never, and cannot be carried into effect. Mexico would fret, fume, and attempt to annoy—nothing more. The only danger would be from the attempt of England to foment difficul- ties—to stir up warin Mexico, on Texas, or sedition and disunion in the United States. In that case, the quarrel would soon become European, and France, with her formidable navy, would be called into the field of action to be the umpire. ‘Lhe question of annexation must also be de- termined before the termination of the pre- sent session of Congress. This is the third time which Texas has knocked at the door ef the Union for admission since 1837, and if the treaty of annexation be refused now, the (decision is final and fatal both to Texas and to the Uni- ted States. IT1IS THE LAST CHANCE. Such isthe condition of Texas, the accumulation of debt—the pressure of taxes—the paralysis of indus- try—all caused by the constant hovering of the Mexicans upon her border, that she must eitherjbe admitted to the United States, or seck protection or alliance ether with England or France. This we have every reason to believe is the secret instruc- tions given to her Plenipotentiary, General Hen- derson, a gentleman of great sagacity, varied ta- lents, and high deplomatic capacity for the very delicate and important mission he has accepted. This is the best and most correct intelligence we can procure on these momentous topics, up to the latest date on Saturday last. In Wash- ington every party and clique is in the state of the greatest excitement. The whigs and democrats are equally afraid of Mr. Calhoun’s bold and masterly movements on these high ques tions. Some desperate attempt may be made by both factions to adjourn precipitately and run away from Washington to avoid the Texas and Oregon questons, till the next presidency be settled—but if they do so, we believe that Captain Tyler will, on the day after sach adjournment, immediately issue a Proclamation for an, Extra Session to take into consideration the propriety of annexing Texas to the United States. We'll see something soon. Mr. Catnoun.—Mr. Calhoun arrived at Charles- ton on Tuesday, and was received in amanner of which he may well be proud; for while the honors paid him were without distinction of party, they were most cordial and enthusiastic. He was met at theRailroad Depot by acommittee of one hundred on horseback, and addressed by Henry Bailey, Een Attorney General, welcoming him to the city this Mr. Calhoun. responded in a brief and feeling style. A procession was then formed, headed by Mr in an open carnage, drawn by four grey horses, attended by Hon. Ker Boyce and Mr. Bai- ley. After passing through some of the Cleo streets, being cheered and greeted in the route by the citizens—the fair, too, paying the homage of their smiles to Carolina’s distinguished son—the procession brought up at the City Hall. “On reaching the City Hall,” says the Courier, “Mr. Calhoun was received with loud and repeat- ed cheers by the citizens, and met by the 0 and Council, with their staves of office ; and his Honor, the Mayor, in a steam of warm and impas- sioned greeting, tendered to the illustrious guest the hospitalities of the city and the welcome of her ci- tizens. Mr. Calhoun made a brief and animated response, in which he alluded to the spontaneous welcome of his reception, without distinction of party, as one of the most gratifying events of his long public career” Ile 0, of his call to the State department, with the concurrence of all parties, asa mark of confidence he might well be proud of; and dealared that it would | be his object, in administering it, to concilrate all parties—espe- cially in reference to the two delicate and important negociations now pending—not exceeded im import- ance by any since that which ratified owr independ- ence.
