Markets. Loxpon Mongy Manxet, March 4.—The Eng- lish Stock market has been tolerably steady since ‘our last publication;*some slight fluctuations have taken place, but Consols wre now at 97§ to 97} for moncy and time, Bank Stock 194} to 1954, being an advance on the prices quoted on the 16th. The Bank of Cugland return of eof weekly liabilities and ussets February 24, gives the circulation at £20,414,000, being an increase of £803,000 since the statement to January 27, though less than the monthly main staple of the hosiery trade, Hany thing, ed, especially in the finer qualities. ‘The fanc; aiontees branch, which was a most extensive and valuable manu facture, is still considerably depressed ; the articles gear cally made are eyelet-hole hose, rather imitating face, anda few tuck hose worked in small devices, the ar- ticles being in general made by tucking a light and dark colored thread. ‘The silk branches still keep in the mos) deplorable condition, whether plain silk, silk knotted, silk glove, or the fancy hose branches. The fancy bobbin net trade ‘has but little improved, and many machines are standing, orare meking alterations. On the other hand, the plain trade, both for pieces and quillings, has eurpris ingly rallied, the public having discovered the stability o} the plaiz nets which ure mostly traversed, and are good soundarticles. Friday Evening, 16th Feb 1644.—The extent of business during the week, thou large, has been moderate compared with that of the last few weeks ; but prices remain without change from our last circnlar, and though there has been no animation, yet there has been no decline. Speculators still continue to buy, and the trade only pur chase what they immediately require. There has been no farther news from America as to crop, so that there- has been no fresh stimulus to buyers, ety it is not proba- ble that even the arrival of the steamer, hourly expected, will contribute gi! thing very important beyond what is ulready known. Inthe meantime the state of trade con- tinues very good, and confidence generally unshaken. Brazils, Egyptians and Surate remain without change. ‘The sales of the week, (with 8000 bales to-day da steady market,) amount to 40,610 bags, including 11,600 American and 6500 Surat on speculation. The quotations, acecrding to the stan now adopted by the Brokers’ Association, are, fair Uplands 6d, fair Mobiles 6)d, and fair Orleans 6}4'per ib. The import ofthe week is 14,898 bales, exclusive of one ship arrived but not reported. Fripay Eventxc, Feb. 23.—The transactions of the week have been on’a very limited scale, and prices as a consequence of this, have rather given way, particularly in the common and middling qualities, which are } pence per pound lower. There is no pressing to sell, nor any cheney of opinion nor diminution of confidence ; but the more limited demand imparts a degree of quietness te the market generally, and so long as there is no desire to speculate, and the trade continue to purchase as cau- tiousty as at present, it is not likely that any improvement willoccur. The probability, however is, that the arrival of the next intelligence from’ the States will give afresh stimulus to the market, for eaerything more and more con- firms the idea of a very short crop, and if indeed the ad- vices were not, unanimous on this point, the quality of the Cotton daily arriving, would, of itself, by its general inferiority, evidence the nature of the season ‘in the States, und the certainty of the growth being small Another and perhaps stronger proof is to be found in the fact that at this period of the year, when the arrivals ought to be looked for in quantity, all the vessela. which had cleared at the last dates from New Orleans and Mo- bile have arrived, and only twoure expected from Savan- nah and Charleston. Brazils and Egyptians are dull, and the same may be said of Surats, which are 4d per Ib lower. ‘The sales of the week (with 3000 bales to-day, and a quiet market) amount to 17,530 bags, including 4000 Ame- rican and 600 Surat on speculation, and 100 Surat for ex- port. ‘The quotations, according to the standard now adopted by the Brokers’ Assoriation, are, fair Up fair Mobile 644, and fair Orleans, 6]¢' pe ‘he import of the week is 18,931 bale: February 97.—The inquiry for Cotton to-day has been more extensive, and several speculators are operating, so that we cannot correctly get at the amount of business done; at present we may safely write upon 4,000 bales, at very full prices, fully one half of it on speculation. The demand for Cotton, which was limited last week. has considerably revived, and a iteady business has been done daily, at full prices for all descrip- tion. Speculators have taken 500 American and 150 Surat ‘There have been forwarded into the country: juring the last Wine? 2960 American, 70 Bahia, 160 Egyptian, and 50 Surat. Liverroot Corrox Market, March 1.—No new fea- ture was apparent in the business of the past week. The market, though quiet, fully maintained its previous posi tion ; the trade purchased moderately, and a fair quantity was taken on speculation. On the whole, a somewhat better feeling existed, but within the last day or two there has been less tightness in prices. We however close jay se’ennight. No decided n has taken place in the quotations within the | feven or eight days, but there is a decline of } per Ib on the common and mitdling qualities since this day fort- night | For some time past speculaturs have shown little disposition to extend their operations, and havi avery moderate demand from the trade whole has had a languid tone, with oc tions of returning vigor. AND ART.—A youn, this city, walking down Broad: few days since, was smitten with the appearance of a young dy, whose form and features were of the most extraordinary beauty. The observed him as they ach other, was no loss struck with his air and manner. It was one of thosr cases of love at first sight which ,even in this artificial age, will sometimes happen. ‘They met in the strect several times, and this mutual liking’of each other increasad, until the gentleman found an opportunity of meeting the lady at a private party.— What promised so much pleasure proved to each a source of the most poignant sorrow. The lady had but one fault to mar her a The down upon her lips had grown to such an extent that though not visible in the street, it was so obvious inthe drawing room that {her lover,a man of nice ideas and the most sensitive domene?. was struck with feelings akin to disgust. It was in vain that he combatted with his feelings. It was wrong, but he could not avoid it. ‘The lady was conscious of the alteration in his feelings, but could not account for it, until a mutual friend under: took to probe the aflair, and'to him the gentleman made a frank explanation. The lady was covered with mortifica- tion and distress. Conceive, ye beautiful. how she must have felt, to lose, for one little blemish, all she valued in existence. Fortunately she was a daily reader of the Star, and the the advices by the packet ships St. Nichelas and Duchess d’ Orleans, the latter vessel having hed a very quick pas sage, and bringing dates to the 9ta instant, were of a vorable character; our market since last reports has been exceedingly dull, not the slightest speculative feeling has been manifested, and dealers buy merely what is required for immediate necessities, Prices have nevertheless been well supported, and are firm at our quotations, which ma) be attributed to the general conviction that our stock. i not likely to be materially increased at present, and that some length of time may elapse before any extensive ship- ments can come forward. The fact of a disparity in prices here and in the United States, where they are compara- tively much higher than with us, goes far to ntrengthen this opinion ; but as there seems to be some ground for ap- prehending a decline there, buyers operate with a great degree of circumspection, and this will probably be the case until the next arrivals from the other side of the At- lantic, which are now looked for with rather anxious ex- rectation—Hops—We continue te quote prices at f. 85 to 90 per 60 kil, duty paid, but they are however nominal, no demand whatever having taken place —Rice—Good Carolina rice is scarce and in request, but ordinary de- scriptions are entirely neglected, 342 tierces found buy- era at f, 22 60 to 28 60 per oO kil., duty (f 137 1s 2d) paid.— Tallew—Considerable flatness continues to predominate in our market, and American produce is entirely neglect- ed, A sale of 66 casks Russia Tallow was made at £62 50 per 60 kil ,duty paid —Whalebone—Owingto the scarcity that prevailed in this article, prices had been forced up unusually high ; but for some time past they have been radually receding, aad are now considerably lower than they were. ‘The sales have been very trifling within the last week, only a few small lots of french ery having been disposed of at 260 per } kil. an fishery is merely nominal, and worth about (270 to 2 75—Wheat— No alteration has taken place in prices since last report, which therefore remain at f 56 per sack of 200 kil. Fimz.—The Baptist church, corner of Oliver and Henry streets, was discovered to be on fire in the inside, yesterday afternoon, and was totally con- sumed, leaving nothing but the stone walls to mark its location. The fire is supposed to have been accidentally communicated by a person who was engaged in the building. There was an insurance on the building for $12,000. J. Fazer’s Tavxinc Macmine.—It is really as- tonishing to see how far human invention may be carried, and we begin to doubt whether there will ever be a limit to it. Mr. Faber’s Talking Auto- maton is a speaking proof of the stupendous effects which genius, combined with perseverance, may produce. Ilere we have a wooden and India Rub- ber contrivance, which speaks and sings in three languages better, perhaps, than many an intelligent being. Tue Great Iron Sreamer.—A letter from Li- verpool to a gentleman in this city, mentions amis- take with regard to the great iron steamer, which, if it did not involve such serious consequences, would be a fine subject for laughter. They have built the monster boat so large that they cannot get her out of the dock, and have new to apply to Parliament for a law to allow them to take down one side of the dock to let the boat out. This is absolutely worse than the Vicar of Wakefield’s great picture, becaure that could be taken intothe barn, or somewhere else; but the steamer is fairly docked in her own craile, if, indeed, the cradle is not rather too advanc- ed a stage to nerve as a comparison. If disease bein the blood, we should abstract the disease only—not the blood itself. It is the impurities which must be removed by BRANDRETH’S PILLS to secure our health, in all states of the weather, in all situo- tions, andin allclimates. ‘The blood, like a good spirit, is always tr ing to benefit the body by its struggles to expel impurities. But it is not capable to effect its own purificn- tion at all times; to do this it must often have assistance. When the blood is loaded with impurities, especialiy in this climate, the consequences may be fatal, provided the blood is not purified at once, and this is sure to be effected if Brandreth’s Pills are used. Coughs, colds, pain in the side, back and breast, are soon removed by this course, and chronic complaints are directly benefitted by their use. 4 Sold—at 25 cents per box—at 241 Broadwa' ry; 189} Hudsoa street; Mrs. Booth’s, 6 Market st. D., , (its virtues having already been fully experienced id attested in the United States of America ) occasioned, was aptly remarked, ‘a new era in the annals of man’s triumph over n # first appearance, it seemed to be considered inthe same light as the numerous em- pirical | productions of the day ; but the proprietors having adopted a plan, embracing the only practical test of utility, that of gratuitous application to all who desired it, (lor several of the first years, which the journals of that period ‘orroborate,) the results quickly exceeded the most sanguine anticipations ; orders for the Balm flowed froma all quarters, accompanied by testimonials of its complete success ; and thus it was, in the parent country, this in valuable production of the new world achieved iis gr st tanh The genuine to be had only at 21 Courtlandt st., in this © MONEY MARKET. Stocks were slightly induenced, but the principal improvement was caused by ie tone of accounts from Washington. The cotton markets in this country will probably be‘affected by the for ¢ign news in a manner that will induce large shipments to Europe, American stocks do not improvejmuch in the London market. The various reports thatghave gone abroad from this country, have mot had a very beneficial influence on prices.
