At the most not over thirty votes in the Senate can be got for it. If Towle has been confirmed, it has been done by Brooks & Co., and Erastus has lobbied for him. Some body from New York has written a dicta- torial letter to the President, threatening to blow , him up in the Herald in case he did not appoint a | certain man to office. The President endorsed on | the note “ rather impudent””—and then wrote asharp A. | letter to the Booby, telling him he did not believe | the man had authorized him to interfere for him. Ja some of his remarks to-day in the Senate, upon the Fox and Wisconsin River Bill, Mr. Allen did himself great credit for some very just observa- tions upon the position of the reporters. He said the wonder is that they make no more mistakes than they do, thrust as they are almost out of hearing of the speakers below, and located in the gallery in the midst of talking and noise. He said they ought to be located om the floor of the Senate, where they can hear, and where they could occasionally avk an explanation, or receive a hint. Never was there a more injudicious or unfortunate arrange- ment. For these remarks of Mr. Allen, let the press of of the United States, which is all more or in- terested in having the best possible facilities grant- ed to reporters, gratefully remember Senator Al- len of Ohio. att Mr. Buchanan broke off in his apeech to-day in the Senate, very nossa abruptly, and som what mysteriously. He merely discussed the sin- gle topic of * that map” with ed line_marked on it ty the royal hand of king George UI. } had charged that Lord Ashburton was in e108 of that map when he negotiated with Mr. Web- ster, which rendered the whole a fraudulent trans action. Mr. Rives followed him ina speech in which he proved to Mr. Buchanan’s satisfaction thas the map was not in the possession of Lord Ashburten, but in the hands of Lord Palmerston,at the time of the negotiation. The immorality, therefore, of transaction belonged to the British mipistry, and Lord Ashburton stands acquitted. But mark—Neither Mr. Buchanan, nor Mr. Rives stated the fact that in Executive session Mr, Rives, with an uir of the Tes Srofecad w#ecresy, in- troduced into the Senate another map—Frankh 6 map—in which the British claim was fully sustain- ed. No American statesman, however, felt that it was his duty to promulgate the existence ef this map to Lord burton. It might be as well,there- fore, to drop the matter of immorality, and say no more about it. i B Mr. Evans introduced a joint resolutien to-day in the Senate, to adjourn Congress en the 20th of May next, at 12 o’clock, M. This is a whig measure that has been rather unexpectedly sprupg upon the Democrats of the House, who had intende ed to make a little capital eut of the first move for an early adjournment of Congress. The whigs of the Senate, however, have got the start. There is a report about town that Calhoun is ex- ected here now daily. You may therefore daily ook for the news of his arrival. Mr. Benton was not in the Senate to-day—nor did he stay yesterday but a very short time. He is evidently yet very feeble. 8. B. TWENTY-EIGHTH CONGRESS, FIRST SESSION. Senate Wasuincton, March 20, 1844. MARYLAND AND NEW YORK IRON AND COAL COM- PANY. Col. Merrick presented a petition from this com- pany, remonstrating against altering the present rate of duties uponiron. ‘They want protection. Mr. Srurcgon advocated the views of the re- monstrance. : Mr. Woopnury said the tariff preposed to remit the duties on iron altogether. And the reason tor the fall in the price of iron was not the duties, but the improvements in manufacturing iron, which have been made in England. ANNEXATION OF TEXAS. Mr. Watxxn presented resolutions from the Le Ristatnres of both jabarma ang ISSR PP! the annexation of Dex to the United States. Ree ferred, and ordered to be printed. NAVAL DEPOT AT VICKSBURG. Mr. Crrrrexpen presented a memorial frem tizens of Vicksburg recommending that place as a suitable site for a naval depot. COLT’S SUB-MARINE BATTERY. Mr. Crittenden’s resolution published yesterday was passed. [Norr.—So we are to have more grand explo- sions of powder at Washington—pray heaven, ne more damage may be done, save to the public ia the way of expense. } FOX AND WISCONSIN RIVER BILL, Mr. Tattmanak said the people of Wiscensia had entrusted him with the care and charge of thie bill He had travelled among them last summer, and the people were pleased with him. He sard that every one who knew him, knew that he was governed in his whole course here (now eleven years) by the most high and honorable motives, which no man could impugn. {Nore.—In making this remark, Mr. Tallmadge was very evidently d sony moved ; his voice trem: bled, his eyes filled with tears, and he was obliged ‘ort to his white handkerchief} | Mr. T. denied most emphatically, that specala- tors had any thing at all to do with the subject eo far as he knew or was concerned. For himself, he said he was in no way at all interested in the lands, &c., either directly or indirectly, nor had he say communication either directly or indirectly witl y speculators in lands. He said that the most lands on these rivers, entered by any one, were by the Hon. Henry Hubbard, of New Hampshire, Ex-M. C., (ademocrat.) In short, he is entirely disinterested in his advocacy ot this bill. (Nore.—Mr. Tallmadge is, therefore, hereby honorably discharged, on his own recognizance, from all criminality or suspicion.) i Mr. Tautmapoe proceeded at length with his argument—going over the old ground—refuting er- rors, correcting mistakes, explaining, defen and demonstrating. {Nore.—The galleries are rapidly filling up in anticipation of hearing a rejoinder te Mr. Choate from Mr. Buchanan. } . - ’ Mr. T. said that since this bill was printed, it hau gone to that country (Wisconsin,) and the opinions of both parties as expressed in the publie papers, had returned to Washington. The people and the press are unanimously in favor of the bill. (Norg.—Never was any poor devil so dreadfully annoyed by an evil genius, as Mr. Tallmadge is by Mr. ‘Allen, on this famous Fox and Wisconsin Ri- vers Bill. Mr. Tallmadge turns his back upon Mr. Allen, fidgets, twists, and wriggles about in every way, to escape the sound of M: "8 voice ; but itis allof no use. Mr. Allen pcre gewe little lost amid the shoals, and rocks, and quick- wands, of the multitude of provisions and amend- ments of the bill; and Mr. Tallmadge sometimes quite loses patience in endeavoring to pilet him aright amid the labyrinths of the bill. Mr. A. says T. claims that the bill has constantly preserved its identity, and yet here are three different editions of the bill, (holding them up.)] ‘THR OREGON NOTICE. ‘ rm (Nore.—The galleries are crowded with ladies and gentlemen. ] + Mr. Croare made an explanation in relation tea misstatement by him of Mr. Buchanan’s opini ‘A! ine has been extensive EI would respectful! volunteered their services, viz NORA BORGHESE BIGNOKA A, MAJOCCH, ar Tt ia DWARD LODEI, O} MISS TAYLOR, tne patrons of the Opera, an NDAY the 25th sustant has been set 11’, when she will nave the honor of ap- prariug before a New York audieee for the list time, this 1 Nich beunavually attractive, ineludiag A BALLET fy Seats may be» secure! at the Opera House, on and afte Ay hext, 2ist instant. He endorsed the report in the Intelligencer ot his speech. Mr. Bucuanan, after his few prefatory remarks ition to the explanation which he proposed te sent a volume of Hansard’s Parliamentary de- bates to the Clerk’s desk, and directed him to read certain extracts from the speeches of Sir Robert Peel and Lord Brougham, relative to the various maps of the N. E. In his apacels Sir Robert Peel had detended Mr. Webster from the charse of bad faith, or trick- ory, or concealment, in essing the knowledge of the existence of Dr. Franklin’s map with the line on it giving the boundary as claimed by England, his map being found in the archives of the For- “ign Office at Paris. None of these maps ye voy thing definite or certain—and above all they lid not prove that Lord Ashburton did not conduct he negotiation fairly and honorably, aswell as ably. Lord Brougham, in his speech ridiculed with the ‘tmost sarcasm, the idea that a negotiator who wae ent abroad to make the best terms that he could or his country, should ever dream of exposing any { the weak’ peints of ye.
