ne These rates are much higher than those charged on the Erie canal, notwithstanding which they will secure a large portion of the produce waiting transportation to market. On the opening of the Erie Canal, there will be great rivalry between the forwarders of produce through the Canal, commencing at Buffalo, and through the Welland Canal down Lake Ontario to Oswego. Immense quanti- ties of produce will reach market through the latter chan- uel. The contest is between the forwarders at Oswego and Buifilo, The forwarders along the line of the canal are about adopting a tariff of freights, which the western merchants say will drive them from the route. This wili force merchandise through the northern route, via Oswe- G0, and seriously injure the revenue from the Erie Canal ‘These movements are going on within the limits of our own State. Farther west, the same competition prevails. Along the whole line of the Wabash Canal, even as far down as Lafayette, contracts are making to take pork, beef, bacon, lard, ashes, and all that description of freight, through the nerthern route to New York, for $12 50 per oe Old Stock Exehnngr. 81000 U © 6s, "62, bo0ds 18 44 FarDvuat Co 10000 dy 190 do 5000 do 127 30 do 10000 do 11% 200 do 44000 Ohio 6's, 1960 95 200FCanton Co 5000 do nw 95 490 do 334 ae ba0ds ae % do pads we a lo 1 lo Ids 334 1600 do 9% 175 Mohawk RR. 56 sn) do, tinaw 95° 2 lo 10600 Kentucky 6’s 100% 10 Harlem RR 300. do b30ds 1008 150 do 18000 80 109 500 do 2000 Ody ie 290 do 1000 Pennsylvania 5's = 65 100 Paterson RR 5009 lo b30d» 6535 150 do 1000 do 60 ds 6545 190 do 5000 do 65% 50 do. 70 0 TL Spee’l Bes 2946 75 Nor& Wor RR 2000 do do 105 Fa 1000 tud Dol Bas 28 3 3 gS bates 30 nd Dol Bde 0 4 2 sheAmex Be 850 do adds 35% 39 Am Trust Bro, 30%¢ 6O. &t 9 75 Auh& Rech RR 103 8 25 L Island RR s60ds 72 395 do 734 Second Board. $1900 Oh’o 6's, 1860 93% 50 Norwich, 3136 1000 do iy Fd 150 Mohawk, b3 55 300 H i, 53 56 ca lo, 83 St 230 Norwieh, 35 75 Farmer’s Loan, 3759 “0 815 35, do 37 15 34 0 do 31% New Stock Exchange. $1000 U 8 6's, 62, 113% 125 Canton, cash 33, 1000 Ind 25 yr cash 36% 50 do 32 1000 do cash 303g 50 do 1000 do cash 3593 50 do 100 Ohio Gs, 69 cash 9588 240 Hartem, 5600 do 8 50 do! 1600 40 do 53:59 1000 100 = do cash 59% 1000 do 830 58! 1000 25 L Island, b20 72) Ms ca at 3 lo cash 71 aa ae 20 ig 25 i do 07% 10 shores N A Trust, ch 14 25 Paterson, cash 77 125 Far Loon, cash 39° 25 Stougington 83 357% odo nae BoD tw 30 40, lo cash 0 Mo do 79-50 Mechanics’ Bk Asso 97 State of ‘Trade. Asues—We notice sales of Pots at $4 50a$4 56}, Pearls at $5 00a$5 06}, but the demand is very limited Bueapstures Western flour is firm’ at $4 933a$5 00,— All sorts are firm just now. We learn from Buffalo that on the 16th inst. eight thousand bushels of wheat were of- fered at 90 cents andne buyers. Two cents below that price was then the rate. babes the west there was, at the last accounts, a downward tendency. Corrox—The market today was rather tame; sales amounted to abont 2000 bales, at previous rates. Several large holders are awaiting the arrival of the steamer; buy- ers are nothing loath, as they have the commaud of the market. Such is the indiaposition to ship that some en gagements have been made at 7-16d for square bales to Li- verpool. Hay—Holders of North river bale are anxious to sell at current prices, but consumers only take enough for pre- sent necessity. The opening of the river will reduce quotations for this article. Our private accounts last evening from Wash- ington are most exciting and inportant—particu- larly on the Texas question. It is now believed that the Treaty of Annexation will be presented to the Senate in a tew days after Mr. Calhoun’s ar- rival—and it is confidently predicted that it will pass the Senate—the whigs not daring to vote against it, for fear of the effects of such a course against Mr. Clay in the south and west. In the mean time, a debate will soon spring up in the House, and many of the New England members are furious against such a project, threatening dis- | solution, separation, and insurrection of all kinds. Both parties, whigs and locofocos, are thunder- struck and paralyzed at the bold movements of Mr. ‘Tyler on Texasand Oregon. There will be prodigious exciting times in Wash- ington in a tew days. The peace of the country —the prosperity ot all—and the fate of Mr. Clay and Mr. Van Buren at the polls, both hang upon the course their respective friends take in these questions. “Washington. {Correspondence of the Herald.) Wasutnaton, March 18, 1844. Acceptance of Calhoun—Surmises—Wonders and other Matters. For the first time I can now touch bottom in the | matter of Mr. Calhoun’s acceptance. | have my | information from one of the South Carolina dele- gation. Mr. Calhoun has not been heard from since | he received h@ oficial appointment—but letters were sent to him prior to his appointment, informing him | that he would receive it. Some of these letters have been answered, and from them it 1s under- stood that he will accept. 1 hear various rumors in regard to certain conditions which it is said he will make in the event of accepting—one is, that he will maintain an independent position, and consider his politic that ot President Tyler. This implies that he will not hold himself bound to oppose Mr. Van Buren because President Tyler does. | course in no way as identified with I presume some of your city papers will state—as they have done all the past week—that Mr. Cal- houn has unqualifiedly accepted the appointment. All such statements are only good guesses. | have stated the facts above. And another fact is, that last night at two o’clock (2A Dixon H. Calhoun is expected on here in the course of this week—say the last of this week or the first of next. It is reportod that Messrs. Belser and Black, who e days, have gone te see Mr. Calhoun. They are particular friends of Mr. Calhoun. 2 P. M —It is now s suthern gentle- Jmen th ere will be 1 t neitherside, but t! alhoun will accept. ‘They say there 1s no doit at all. 8. Wasnine Norr.—While I was ling i day last, the Senate passed a bill repealing the dis sribhtign law—which has for sometime past been inoperative from the conditions of the tariff. The repeal has no practical effec: TARIFF oF ’42. _ Gov. Moreneap presented a petition from citi- ens of Pennsylvania, approving the tariff of 1842, and asking that Congress will not interfere with it. {Nore.—These continued petitions from Penn- sylvania, against the new tariff, look ominous as respects the vote of Mr. Buchanan. No petitions have yet been received in favor of the new bill. Has it no friends 1) BILLS, REPORTS, &c Quite a number of reports by committees were made—as also bills introduced, and resolutions of- fered—pertaining to minor matters, pensions, land claims, holding of courts, post routes, &c., &e. REVENUE XPORTS, AND IMPORTS. Mr. Jarnaain offered a resolution, asking of the Presidenuthe statistics of revenue received, and ex- ports and imports made from September last up to the Ist March. COMMITTEE ON THE TERRITORIES. Mr. Bacrey desired that a Committee on Terri- tories might be formed in the Senate. [There is none now.) Mr. Evans thought it was unnecessary. Mr. Baaury said the District of Columbia has a Committee—and the Territory ought, a fortiori, to have one. Mr. Huntineton said it was now one o’clock, and it was time to attend to other business, He moved to lay the resolution on the table. Carried. ‘THE OREGON NoTICR. Mr. Ancuer thanked the Senate for their courtesy in indulging him in his delay to speak on this ques tion. He should now be brief. ‘This is a momentous quesuon. This resolution is advisory of the President in a matter left by the constitution to his discretion. The most important matter pertaining to the resolution giving the ‘ no- tice,” Is the motive which prompts them to pass the resolution. What is this motive? I answer, distrust of the President. They dare not trust the President in the discharge of his duties, And in this matter the democratic side of the Senate were continually taunting them with the treaty of Wash- ington ol August, 1842. Mr. Arcuen proceeded to answer Mr.Buchanan’s arguments. Mr. B. spoke of its being dishonora- ble to this country to allow this territory to be jointly pied by Great Britain. You make it a point of honor to go on and occupy the Oregon with an armed force. And will not England deem ita point of honor to resist with torce of arms?
