NEW YORK HERALD. New York, Friday, March 1, 1544. WASHINGTON! HORRIBLE ACCIDENT Terrible Excitement and Grief in Washington, Yesterday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, we received by the Railroad train from Philadelphia accounts#s fromi Washington, containing one of the most hor-¥ rible and heart-rending ecatastrophies that ever took place in this or any other country. At a féte given by Captain Stockton, on board the Princeton, laying inthe Potomac below Wash-é ington, an explosion took place of his large gun,¥ which carried death and destruction to all aroundy it—killing Secretary Upsher, Secretary Gilmor, Colonel Gardner, the Assistant Postmaster General, Hon. Virgil Maxcy, of Maryland, and Com. Mc- Kennon, also wounding severely Senator Benton, Captain Stockton and many others. When this account reathed us verbally yester- day afternoon, about 2 o’clock, we could hardly g believe it—but successive and immediate inte!~ ligence made it too true. A most intense excitement pervaded the city on its first publication at this and other newspaper: offices. By great exertion we were enabled to send the particulars to our agents, subscribers and 5 correspondents, at Boston and the eastward, and also by the Royal Steamerto England and France. This actident is most singular. It seems to be the fate of all novel and extraordinary inventions, to be marked, on their first introduction into the; world, with death and destruction to their in yentors and patrons. Guillotine, who invented, the instrument that passes by his name, died ¢ by its agency. Mr. Huskinson, a member of, the British Ministry, was accidentally killed at? the celebration of the opeming of the first Rail, Road in England, between Liverpool and Man chester. Captain Roberts, who first crossed the. bottom in the Fresident steamer, in the same ocean. Atlantic in a steam boat, was the first to go to ined Capt. Stockton, of the Princeton. The dead bodies are left on board the Princeton. a Of Commodore Kennon; fi Of Virgil Maxcy ; \ GREAT GLOOM IN WASHINGTON! : One of the most terrible and shocking calamiti that has occurred in this country for years, we have now to chronicle. To-day, the 28th February, the Princeton mad another excursion, having on board several hun- dred gues's. : The ship proceeded down the river below Mount Vernon, and on its return, when in abovt twenty# f minutes run of Alexandria, the large gun on the Xgtand that the “larity and enjoy had been discharged with ball, and the usual ser-! i atthe breech, spread; bow was fired, it being the second or third time vice charge, and, explo: death and destruction on the deck ! The Secretary of State, Mr. Upshur, the Secretarv of the Navy, Gov. Gilmer, Com. Kennon, Chief of the Barean of Construction of the Navy, Virgil Maxcy, Esq. and Mr. Ciardiner, of Southampton, New York, were instantly killed, and six sailors are reported badly wounded. One of the Presi- dent’s servants, a colored man, has since died. iP Colonel Benton and Captain Stockton were, slightly injured. The accident happened about three o'clock, some two or three miles below Ale andria. Col. Benton’s injury arose not from any: fragment of the gun, but merely from the concu: sion. He wasatthe but of the gun, taking its, range when it fired. f ie was not sensible of its stunning effect until he had called for aid to the bleeding sailors. He was stunned for atime, but was enabled to walk after reaching the shore, and has given a distinct account of the dreadful scene. Captain Stock- ton aa burnt by the powder, but not seriously in- jared. Among the victims are those named above. It* 1s said several of the gunners, crew, &c., belong- ing to the ship, were killed or mortally wounded,’ & and several others are missing. ‘The breech of the gun was severed, and carried} away the bulwark of the ship opposite to it. It was the iron fragments, it is supposed, which struck’ down so many on board, and who could not have, been behind the gun. The accident took place about sunset. Asteamboat from Alexandria, which was passin: was sent back to town, aad returned with several, surgeons. The Princeton yet lies at anchor at the; place where the frightful accident occurred, with: the bodies on board. Most of the guests haveg arrived in the city. The President of the United States, who was ong board at the time of the explosion, but who e: d unhurt, remains with the bodies on board, understand the Princeton will come up in morning. We have stopped the press at 9 o'clock, P. M. to make the above melancholy announcement.) The astounding event renders us unfit to make any remarks.of our own. We can only record) the sad occurrence. The same number of our paper which contains the unfortunate Gilmer’s address to his constitu ents, bears them also the acconnt of his death. __ The last paragraph in the official notice respect- ing the Canadian prisoners, in this number of our; paper, was written by the lamented Upshur, just, starting on the excursion, and are the last words he ever wrote. _P.S.
