The course of the Banks of that State has heretofore shown that their officers have been thoroughly skilled in financial matters. During the revulsions lately experi- enced, they have been compelled more by institutions of asimilar nature surrounding to suspend than by their want of ability to meet their engagements. The revolu- tion in 1837 swept them away with others, but they rapid- ly recovered, and since, famidst the many speculations in cotton, that have been going on around them, have not been seduced to enter them, but have carried on succ fully the legitimate business, for which they were char- tered :— Banxs or Sovtn Carozina. 1 Jan fi L Feb... This last item presents a very curious fact. The late reports that have come to hand all show an increase in the deposits. In this city particularly, those banks wh ose querterly reports have! beengmade pablic, exhibit 7.n increase of deposits, notwithstanding the heavy speculy tions in cotton and stocks, This shows that the capital + of private individuals ore larger thantheir busi- ness, ? which conducted on the sound principles of trade, does not require the whole of their resources to carry on. The existence of this state of things places the banks and the merchants in a different relative position than they ever before occupied. It leaves the banks in a situation that compels them to seek other employment than that before received from the mercantile communities. It lemves them with plenty of idle capital to take hold of the first bubble that offers itself, and it leaves the merchants to conduct their business as maybest suit their judgments, ‘uncontrolled {by bank favors or bank contractions. In former years the entire movements of trade depended on the policy the banks might from time to time choose to adopt. The consequence was a continual irregularity of trade and the most annoying uncertainty of commercial events. The extent of paper money thrown into the channels of trade, from time to time, governed prices and demand, and the result was sudden fluctuations, and as sudden contractions, Operators were repeatedly led away during the period of prosperity, into a line of busi- ness depending upon a continuation of those days, to per- fect their movements, but before arriving at such « result, a sudden collapse in the money market would unsettle every arrangement and produce bankruptcy and indiyi- durlruin. Such was the result of the banking system, as carried out a few years since, the effect of which is still visible. Lately the banks havc experienced a revolution in theiroperations, and a greater regularity and uniformity marks their movements, Banx Movement in tue Principat Cities. Date. Loans § discs. N. Charleston, Feb. 1, °44, Mobile, Dec. 2, 1843, New Orleans, Jan. 27, This gives the latest comparative returns of the banks in the principal cities, most all of which show a slight in- crease. The above shows the bank movement in all the principal speculative markets. The greatest increase has been in the banks of this city, as they are engaged in spe- culations in every part of the country. Ifthe banks of the South cannot grant all the favors re- quired to carry on any operation, drafts are immediately made on this city and presented at our banks for discount. $0 long as our banks are able, they will receive this paper tothe exclusion of every other description. ‘The banks in the southern cities aro not drawn into the speculations to the extent those in this city are. Capital centres here and speculators resort to this market to carry on their operations. The banks of Massachusetts move along with the utmost regularity, because they are con- cerned in a more legitimate business than those of this city or State. ‘The fluctuations are more toa greater extent in this city than in any other, and this market is conse. quently more subjectito ups and downs.
