The assets of the Commercial Bank, sold at anction, Were nominally valued at between two and three hundred thousand dollars, and brought about five thousand. This shows many of the beauties of banking ina small focus. Evidence'like this cannot be controverted. The present system of banking produces cases like the above very often, ‘The paper currency of many of the southern banking and other corporated manufacturers of paper money, is fast going out of existence. At Milledgeville, Georgia, on the Ist instant, $296,000 in Central Bank bills were burned by the officers of the institution. They have on hand about $70,000 more to share the same fate. This will leave only about $275,000 in actual circulation. The surest method to remedy the evils arising from an over- abundanee of paper money, is to destroy the cause. Asa general thing the banks are in a little better condition than usual. We cannot discover that they have made any extension of discounts on account of the speculations going on in cotton in that section of the country. The specie in their vaults has increased nearly $2,000,000 sinceSeptember 1 being nearly two thirds of the whole receipts of specie since that date. The deposits have also increased since September Ist, more than two millions. The following is a condensed statement of the condition of the banks, made from the official retarns.
