Western Rivers.—The St, Louis Reporter of 23d inst., says, that the river is now clear of ice, and in good navigable order—there being upwards of six feet water in the channel to Cairo. There was a heavy rain yesterday, with mild weather, which may ca rise.” The St. Charles Advertiser of the 20th ult. Fang the steamboat Monona passed this place on Wednes- jorning last, on her way to Boonville and Glasgow. Bu little ice has been running in the Missouri river the present week, and that so thin as to render it of little or no inconvenience to boats. The river, during the first of the week rose considerably, but is now ona stand, ‘Trav or Cornets..—Cornell, who was indicted for the murder of his wife, at Jamestown, last bruary, had his trial at May v ille, last week, which result- ed in a verdict of Guilty, The trial commenced on Thur day, and the case Was given tothe jury on Saturday ev ning. A person named Alonzo Bates, who resides near Peoria, Wy- oming county, stopped at a tavern ‘dinia with the intention of staying all ight. During the evening he heard that a respe2table widow with three children—the eldest a daughter seventeen years of age—lived near. He announced his attention, in a boasting manner, of passing the night at her house. ‘Some time during the evening he proceeded to the house. He found the mother absent and the family in charge of the daughter ; and locking the door, he compelled the defenceless girl, under the threat of instant death, to pass the night with him. ‘Towards morning he leit the house; but was soon overtaken and brought before the nearest ‘magistrate, by whom he was held to bail in the sum of $500.—Rochester Democrat.
