This passed the House, although it has been recently rejected by the Senate 2 ‘Mr. Pevrer offered a resolution calling on the Commi tee of Ways and Means to report a Bill reducing the pay all the officers of Government. This was agreed to. Mr. CaLvwet offered another resolution, calling on the Committee of Ways and Means to report a Bill modifying the ‘ariff'so as tax all classes equally, or rather to tax the property and not the people of thé country. This lies over one day under the rule. Mr, Wentworth called on the Secretary to know what money had been expended for the relief of the heirs of the olficers and seamen who fell at the Battle of Lake Erie Resolutions of all sorts and kinds were then offered calling on ali the various Secretaries, &c. for every con- ceivable kind of information—statistics of all sorts, tables, &e,, the whole of which could not be supplied in less than ‘a year, Without trebling the number of clerks. A Bill was then read twice to reduce the present rate of duty on salt. The vote by which the Houre decided the other day to print Greenhow’s old report upon the Oregon territory, was then reconsidered, partly because of the expense of rinting, and partly because Greenhow is about to pub- ish soon a much better and fuller work on the subject. Mr. Wextwonrn said he did’nt care ifthe report was as big as three bibles, he would go for having it printed if it settled our right'to the Oregon territory, or gave au- thentic informution in relation to it. The sales were only to a moderate extent. Stocks have been on the decline so long, that the highest hopes of the most sanguine now do not estimate that prices will reach the point they have seen lately. The course adopted by the banks, within a week or two, has had a great influence on quotations, but without this influence prices could not be sustained Money i very abundant, but anticipated wants from the regulur channels of trade, have caused a revolution in loans that will operate unfavorably to the brokers. ‘There is a moderate demand for ioreign exchange, and rutes rule below the last quotations, The best bills can be bought on London at 849 premium.
