Items of News, ke. Funerar or Mr. Srrague—Furtuer Cincum- STANCES aTYENDING THE MurpER.—A large con- course of people were in attendance at the funeral, eer the Providence Chroniele, hoth trom this city and the neighborhood ubout, We have never seen a crowd, on the laces ol Which there was written more deep, more in- tense feeling. The dreadful particulars of the murder zushed Bead upon the minds ot all, ‘There was the spot murder—there was the home of the murdered man— ‘there were his weeping family—above all, there was his d, disfigured body. ‘The funeral took place at 1 k—and at (uit an hour betore that time people began to arrive. ‘he house was soun full to overlowing, and crowds remained out of doors. ‘The sermon on the occas sion, Was preached by the Rev. Mr. Tucker, and was sin guariy “bewututul, eloquent and appropriate to the occa- sion. He alluded to the many virtues of the deceased— his integrity as a man of busiaess, his kindness as a hus- band and 4 father, his benevolence to the poor, Kc, He then alluded to his untimely end and commented with great feeling and pathos on the uncertainty of human fie, At the conclusion of the sermon, the rela- tives of the deceased were led to take the last look of one to whom they were endeared by so many ties. The scene was solemn in the extreme. Tears were sven coursing down the cheeks of the strong man, as well ‘as the tender woman, There was the deep and heart-rend- ing agony of the wife, bereaved of the husband of her youth; the grief ofthe brother, not so apparent, it is true, but not less sincere; and the relatives looking with tearful eyes on the mangled corpse of the husband, brother, friend, touched every heart and drew tears from every eye. This ceremony completed, the coftin Was placed in the hearse, and followed by the immense concourse of people who had assembled, it Was borne to its last resting place, Here ap- propriate ceremonies were performed, and the corpse was placed in a tomb in the family burying ground, a short distance in the rear of the house, “After the services at the house were concluded, we drove over to the spot where the murder Was committed. in going thither we passed the house of Nicholas Gordon. Here all looked cold and lonesome; the circumstances which were con- nected with it gave it an ud titional dreary appearance ‘To make this impression still more vivid, we saw the do; who has figured so conspicuously in the affair which has causedso much sorrow and gloom in the community. He was wandering about in a restless and uneasy manner. As we got out of the sleigh to get a peep into the interior of the house he came up to us snuiting, and as it appeared to Us, with a peculiar look of loneliness. A feeling of dread and loathing crept unresistingly over us; we shrunk from his approaching, aud jumping into our vehicle, continued on tothe spot of the murder. On reaching the fatal spot we were struck with the remarkable daring and recklessness of any person who could, at such atime, and at such a place, have perpetrated so horrid a deed. Standing on the very spot Where Mr, Sprague was found, we could houses im full view, and at but « short distance short distance north of this spot, on the same path, is an- other holiow, more retired, aud one which would seem better fitted for such a deed. In fact the whole path is drear in the extreme, The snow had turned up the day before, in asearch for more portions of the gun, which were missing, and were here found. Notwith standing the heavy rain which has occurred since the murder, the blood appeared as fresh and bright as when first shed. The bridge, of which mention has been made, runs nearly north and south, Directly west, is a low stone Wall, behind which it is supposcd the murderers must have lain in wait for Mr. 5. ‘The struggle, which is supposed to have taken place almost immediately, favors this idea, Mr 8, was undoubtedly shot in coming down the hill at the north end of the bridge. His first impres- sion must have been to run for the bridge ; the wall being so near it, would enable the murderer or murderers to reach it at about the same moment. Appearances indicate that he was knocked from the bridge, and the struggle un- doubtedly here commenced, [From the Providence Journal, Jan. 8.] A girl, ten years of age, whe lived in the family of Nic- holiy Gordon, has been examined in relation to the murder of Mr. Sprague. Her testimony has not been made public, but it is said to be important, and to fasten suspicion still more strongly upon the men arrested. We are informed that we were mistaken in saying that Nicholas Gordon had threatened Mr. Sprague, There are various rumors ailoat, but nothing beyond what we have published bas reached us in w reliable shape. Hardly any doubt is enter- tained that the persons arrested were concerned in the dee Wesrern Rivers.—A slight rise was reported a day or two since in the Upper Mississippi and Llli- nois Rivers, but the Jast boat m from Keokuk reports the Upper Mississippi again falling. The river opposite here has risen some 12 or 19 inches, but is receding to-day.— Boats go out drawing 9 tect water.—St, Louis New Ea, Dec. _Laxse Exiz.—Navyigation still continued on Lake Ene on the 2d inst. ‘The steamboat Saint Clair lett Cleveland for Detroit on the ist inst., and if the mild weather continued was to return and proceed for Butlalo. Severe Caramity.—A St. Louis paper tells a story of a disconsolate widower, who, on seeing the re- mains of his late wile lowered into the grave, exclaimed with tears in his eyes—' Well, I’ve lost hogs und I’ve lost cows, but! never had anything to cut me up like this!” s.
