The move- ments of trade for the past year in Buffalo, have been very extensive, and the merchants of that city have carried on avery successful business without the help of a single local bank. They have almost entirely recovered from the prostrated position in which the abuses of banking, so successfully performed for those interested, placed that de- voted city, and they see the amount of trade transacted in one season—and that season the first after the reaction of Dusiness—safely, profitably and legitimately. ‘They have the best evidence that when trade is confined to the natu ral channels—Banks are useless, dangerous institutions. , They have occular demonstration that as large operations can be carried to a successful result as expeditiously without banks as with. More mercantile houses may be required to carry on the commerce of a city, because ca’ pital will, without banks, be more widely distributed, and the profits arising benefit a larger number. i individuals, with small capitals, can find a foothold with- out being compelled to compete with houses having im- mense capitals, obtained from banks, and by whose aid ek to monopolise the movements of trade. would have greater efect in a place like Buffalo than in ae Free Banking Law. It is afact, as strange as important, that the largest depots offproduce in the interior, places where immense amounts of the productions of the \West have accumu- lated, are almost completely destitute of banks, and no one on looking to the different tables of the movements of Flour, Wheat, Pork, &c. cannot but admit that the busi- ness in those articles has been more extensively and more successfully; transacted than ever before, not even except- ing those seasons when banking facilities could be obtain- ed in any quantity and upon any sort of security. The first thing an individual does in his private affairs, when his receipts are less than his ex- penditures, is to reduce his expenses. Economy is the true cause of great riches, and the general.government should lop off many of the excressences that are useless and expensive. The revenue from the present tarift—al- though that act requires modifications, independent of the income derived from it—and the receipts of government from existing sources, would, with proper regard for the public interest, meet all the actual necessary expendi- tures, ‘There has been a movement made in Congress to cut down the appropristions for the Army and Navy, and the disposition strongly advocates a reform of such a na- ture. The deficiency in the Treasury would soon disap- pear before a just and proper curtailment in the enormous outlays to sustain these items of expense. Baltimore Cattle Market. The pofiarings of 8 of beef cuttle at the scales this week hat been | jearly 1000 were sold at prices ranging fro: $l 60102 95 per 100 Ibs. on the hoof, netting $3 20 a4 90, according to quality. ‘There'were about 300 head left un: sold. The market is well supplied with live hogs, and we quote them at $3 62, Bee bed 100 Ibs. We notice considerable sales at $391}, though they are generally held at $387}.
