Items of News, Tus Mvxpexse Tuoax.—The Brunswicker pub- lishes the following letter from this man to his sis- ter at Harpswell :— Thomaston, Nov. 12, 1843, My Dean Sierex—I take my pen in hand to inform you of my health, which is at present, and I hope these tew Jiges wail find you the same. She said, my folks forced me to have him.—She said when she consented to be published she was crazy and did'nt know what she was about. My dear sister, then, she asked me if I could'nt put him out of the some how, and I told her no, I could not do such thing for the world, and she said 1 would’nt think nothing of doi it. M., at her lodgings, 41 Spain street, inthe Third Municipality, by severing the radial artery of her left arm with a common case kaife, For some hours previous to perpetrating the fatal deed, she Sooving sate nay calling on her husband (who was eeping betid le her on the floor) for whiskey ; she not being a le, from the effects of immoderate drinking for some days previous, to hel; herself Previous to her death, some of her neighbors, alarmed, entered her apartment and found her deluged’ in blood, with the fatal knife in her hand, exclaiming. “Now I have done the job!” Michael 0” Brien, the hushand of the unfortunate ‘woman, has been arrested, charged with urdering his wife.—N.O. Pic. Dec. 7. atria) Fisnivo Vesseis.—Fishing vessels have been in unusual demand recently, and quite a number have been sold. Many persons have vissited this town in quest of schooners suitable for fishing and freighting business. Our neighboring town of Essex always fitting out her ves- sels from this port, and also wintering them here, has made this town the market for them, when on sale, for many years. A number of vessels belonging to that place have been sold here with within a few Woekefpast; and also about cight schooners belonging to this port — The: ‘e nearly all gone to different ports in the State of Maine, an evidence that our sister State has prospered more in the fishing business than the “Old Bay State.”— It oat pleasure we learn that a number of vessels are on our itocks at Exsex,and we hope that the business of town will revive.— Gloucester Telegraph. More Sreamers.—A company has been formed at Derby, New Haven Co., Connecticut, with a capital of $10,000, for the purpose of procuring a steam vessel to run as a night boat to New York. An iron vessel is now building for the company, to be constructed with the Ericsson propellers. Genera Epwarp Oarrincron, a merchant of high high character, distinguished for his snterprise and his dird ‘at Providence on Sunday lest, eden illness, aged sixty eight years. He was an of New Haven, Conn., but adopted Providence as his resi- dence at the age of eighteen. Loss er tHe Sreamer Jor Davirss.—The Em- press brought to Louisville Captain Keys and crew of the steamer Joe Daviens, which struck © stump on the 10th, five miles above Placquemine, in attempting to land for @passenger. She sank in three minutes from the time she struck. Passengers and crew all escaped—soine with the loss of their baggage. Boat and cargo a total loss.— Cincinnati Gazette. Conviction ror Mvrper.—Sam Mohawk, an Indian, has been convicted at Pitts burg of murder in the first degree, for killing a whole family. Duck Suootine in THE Lower Reeions.—The Attakapas Canal, between Bayou Lafourche and Lake Verret, is now navigable for small boats. Amateurs of game can have a chance of proceeding through this froute to Lake Natchez and Bayou Go-to-hell, to spend the Christmas Holydays. The ducks and geese in those parts at this time, are, to an extraordinary degree, very numerous.—New Orleans paper, Dec. From Covompia.—lIntelligence has Fant received confirming the report of an attempted insurrection at Santa Martha, (Colombia) in which the Governor was killed. The insurgents were about 200in number. The French steam trigate Gomer immediately procecded to Santa Marthe. to assist the authorities, andthe insur- gents retreated toward Bahia.
