Apany, Dec. 20, 1843. Candidates for legislative offices are continuing to arrive. It is most singular, indeed, that people o sense: should be so infatuated as they are in regard to this business of holding offices. To hold an of- fice, no matter how insignificant it may be, would seem to be their highest hope, their El Dorado. ‘To succeed inthis, or rather in endeavoring so to do, many of them will sacrifice business, time and money with the mos: utter recklessness; and should they be suecessful, what do they really gain in the long run? Nothing—utterly nothing. They re- ceive, perhaps, a hundred or two dollars, nearly all of which it is likely isswallowed by the increased expense of living and the e¢ ceteras ; when, had they remained home, by astrict atteation to their legitimate business, they might easily have cleared double the amount, and retained their health and temper in the bargain. James R. Rose, recently acandidate for the legislature from this county, is also mentioned asa candidate for clerk of the House. He is a stro man, Hunkerish, and will give Mr. Henry N. Wales a strong pull. Mr. R. is an Albanian, and a young lawyer of much talent, and would make a good clerk, Marshal J. Bacon, late of New. York, and now of this city, is also a candidate for the clerkship. Mr. Bacon has many strong frie! and may suc- ceed. He is well known in your city, having been connected, too, with the corps editorial, and should he bring the city delegation to his support, his chance is not bad. For doorkeeper several candidates are on hand. M. J. Smith, the late editor of the Seneca Falls Democrat, is, think, the most Prominent. dog brings with him a streng influence trom th Mr. 3. is certainly deserving of it. He has Pato as arduously for the advancement of the democratic party as any man in it. A. H. Richardson, of Madison county, iaanother strongcandidate. He comes well backed, and will give the other candidates a hard run. Smith's chances are the best. _ Mr. Hoffman, trom recent developments, | aus inclined to think, will be the Speaker after all.— ‘The conservatives would hardly poe to eg over board so strong aman, and more than all, they fear him on the floor, and thus they will be neces sitated to vote for him for Speaker. Candidates, not measures, are the all-absorbing topics just now. There are many speculatio! however, relative to the tone and character Gov. Bouck’s message. It is asserted here, cong- dently, that it will be rather more ultra thao his previous ones—rather more barnburning, if you lease. Constitutional reform and all, will be swal- low ved so as to conciliate, &e. The cry of “Bouck and one term” has reached the ears of his Agricul turaley, and he begins to find it necessary to bestir himsell if he wishesto retain his station for another term. ‘There is a good deal of excitement here at pro- sent on the subject of lottery dealers. The pub- lishers of the Tomahawk, a satirical print, ve been indicted for libel on sundry lottery dealers. They have been rather violent on these gentry for some time past, and now are preferring complaints against the lottery venders in retaliation. They are backed by the most respectable of our citiz and it is likely: the lottery dealers will be made to sufler some. These are warnings to your friend Moses Y. Beach and his carrier pigeon system. Srvon. Jackson, Miss. (Correspondence of the Herald.) Jackson, Miss., Dec. 9, 1843. State of Things in Mississippi— Repudiation. Dear Si No doubt you have learnt ere this the result of our election, and presented the same to your many thousand readers; that result, you will have per- ceived, has terminated most triumphantly for the democratic party, alias locofocos, anti-bonders, and repudiators, as these are the various cognomen that they are blessed or baptized with by many, both whig and democrat, for there are some de- mocrats who are favorable to the payment of the bonds ; besides, there is another party, or set of men, who repudiate (I use the term in its broadest sense) all kinds of debts, obligations, &c.; but they are peculiar to themselves, perfect sui generis, and are dignified by the very worthy appellation of “ Subterraneans.” Although they have their pecu- liar opinions in relation to the bond question, and all others, where their pockets are concerned, yet when they go to the polls to cast their vote, it is freely given to that party whose principles most closely approximate to their own; and of course, in the late election, voted the democratic ticket, as they are, for the most part, descended from t at stock. in the late election the bond question was the great hobby of both the whigs and democrats —the one for their payment, the other for theirnon- payment; so you may consider that question fairly settled so faras the people are concerned. That they are unwilling to pay the bonds is amply mani- fest to all who will only view the result of the election, aad reflect upon that which has brought about this result; for it cannot be ascribed to any other source than the payment or non-payment of the bonds being made the issue between the demo- crats and whigs. So the question between the bondholders and fay eT of the State of Missis- sippi, must be considered, so far as they are con- cerned, as finally settled—perhaps irrevocably fixed. There yet remains one other tribunal for an ap- peal to be made for the redemption of the bonds— to the judiciary; but unhappily, I am con- strained to say, that even here they will probably be defeated; that here, what they have endeavored to obtain from the people on the pleac honesty, right and justice, will be denied them by the inter- ference of a most Wyk barrier, “* tne strong arm of the law.” And why, might be asked, is such a termination anticipated, should the question come before the judiciary for their decision? Sim- ply thus:—the judiciary are elected by the people; they know’ that in them is reposed the power tnd right to decide on the legality of the debt, and that should they so decide, it my be binding on them, and the payment of the bonds would ne- cessarily be enforced by the decision of the judi- ciary ; tor men, when left to themselves to act and. choose between the payment and non-payment of the bonds, will inevinNDly pursue that course which costs them least, and takes naught from their purse; but when the judiciary have decided that the a must be paid, they will not be liable to — the decision of that branch of government which they have instituted for the purpose of defending thee rights, and whose decision tl ~ look upon as final in all legal, conetitutional aad other questions within their jurisdiction. Knowing this, they are taking steps to guard m Jeon the overthrow of that victory lately achieved ; or, in other words, of annulling what the cog have decided through the ballot box; that is, they will make it a question on every election for judges, both ot the high and inferior Courts, of bond and anti-bond; or if not mad. question, the opinions of the candidates for Ju will be so well known, that it will amount to the same thing. By thismeans, men who are perhaps unfit for the bench—being incompetent, unworthy, id perhaps dishonest, will be foisted imto the various Courts to pronounce judgment upon cases of which they know but little—scarcely conversant with the simplest laws of their own State—unable, perhaps, to read or write their own language, to- tally devoid of all ability, in every sense of the word; those that are in favor of the payment of the bonds, if a candidate, no matter how yronhy, how able, how profound, how sagacious, or how learned, will’ be naught in the scale for his claims on the ople for the Judgship, when the other beam will fe foaded with the ponderousness of a repudiator. Although inferior to the meanest x peritoane fi law. yer of the land, if he is an anti-bonder, all will ac- knowledge his superior claims for their votes. He only to say, “Tam a repudiator! Io triamphe Such, you may rest assured, will be the resnit of | the late vietory. Already has it made i arance | —one or more instances have but lately taken place, are but the stepping stones for more ae- pirants. This is deeply to be deplored.
