BASE AND DETESTABLE IMPOSITION.—The Bart mlarity and universal demand for Dr. Felix Gourauds Poudres Subtiles, for uprooting hair without the slightest injury to the skin, has awakened the cupidity of a nest of vile counterfeiters, who are palming upon the public a spurious and deleterious article as the enuine preparation. To protect purchasers against these fleceivers, the proprietor has had cast a splendid square bottle, on the four sides of which are blown the following: “Dr. Felix Gouraud’s Poudres Subtiles, for uprooting hair, New York,” enveloped ina handsome wrapper, with the Dr.’s fac simile. The public may rest assured that every bottle not answerin; the above description is a worthless imitation and should be rejected, and those who attempt to veeive, and their injurious composition, shunned and de- spised. | ‘These powders have, been long held in high esti- mation, and are recemamended by every one who has used them, as uniting entire efficiency with perfect safety, in eradicating, every description of superfluous hair, hoy ever deep the bulb may be seated. This is an advance equal to the semi-annual payment oy interest. Norwich & Worcester Railroad declined a} per cent, This great improvement in prices has caused the more sober minded operators to pause, and take an obser-} vation of their position. The great abundance of money in ,every city of the Union, the general inactivity of trade, throwing into unu- sual channels the capital that should be confined to the regular movements of commerce, have created operations in all the speculative bubbles of the day. The prices of nearly all the stocks, given in our tables of to-day, have advanced and declined from time to time, without the least real permanent cause in the world. Other markets should be governed by the facts, and any advance in the price of stock of repudiating States should not be attributed to any favorable prospect that may have been indicated by the movements of the different legislatures. Notwithstanding all the negociations made by {commissioners, and all the space devoted to the subject in the Messages of the Governers, (with the exception of the State of Illinois,) not a single repudiating State in the Union isa jot nearer fulfilling their engagements than they were a year since So far, not the first move has been made. The recommen dations of the Governors have been forgotten, and our Legislatures have devoted their time and attention to other matters. Before a single State Assembly met, we predict: ed this result, The domestic exchanges of the States never were in @ more prosperous, healthy condition. They are go verned by a power that competition will always regu- late, and wé can safely depend upon the uniformity that has marked this branch of inland trade for sometime past: Domestic Excuanass, Dec. 15. To-day but a limited business was done, at firm prices. les, amounting to about 4500 bales, which were ce Wednesday evening, were reported to-day. The markets throughout the country remain in a ve uncertain state. The new crop is coming forward wit! the usual activity, but there are so many conflicting ac- counts of thelextent of ‘the yield, that planters and holders are undecided about prices, and hesitate about operating until something more decided is known. The receipts of new cotton into New Orleans up to the 4th inst. were nearly as large as those for the same period last year.— The crop will not exceed 1,800,000 bales, and it may fall a little short of that estimate. The quai y that has reach- ed the different southern depots, this year, compared with last, is no evidence of the extent of the crop. The plant- ers are more ab! hold on to their crop, and will not let it leave their possession, except at remunerating prices, and for value received. ‘This fact is alone sutticient to re- duce receipts at the southern cities, and keep cotton long- er out of market. An extract from a letter, dated Colum- bus, Miss. Noy. 30th, says: “You have, no doubt, heard something of the shortness of the cotton crop, and the backwardness of the planters in this region of the country in gathering—but thevens idea you have any information relative to the injury done to the cotton, and the unprecedented backwardness of the farmers, Our cotton opened late, say 1st September, and from that time to Ist Nov. we had an unusually wet and bad fall, About the Ist Nov. the heavy rains set in—since the latter period there has been little or no cotton saved— in short, there is no time since the settlement of the coun- try in which farmers have been so backward as the pre- sent; had the season for picking been favorable, the crop would not have been an average one. Up to this time not more than two thirds of the crop which matured has been picked, and that portion yet in the field may be considered as lost.” ‘This is asample of reports. that continually come into our possession, which have their necessary weight in convincing us the crop must fall considerable below that of last year, The following we extract from a circular iarge cotton house in this city = “Since our last review of the market under date of 29th November, we have had an animated demand and heavy sales ; on the 30th November, and Ist and 2d Decembet, the sales amounted to 1500 bales esl day, atthe advance jnoted in our last ; on Monday, the 4th December, a very spirited demand was experienced, and the sales that day were not less than 7000 bales, and a further advance of } ‘0 $c was obtained, the sales being chiefly for export ; on the Sth and 6th the demand continued, the sales bein, about 3500 bales per day, at prices fully sustaining the of vance, the majority being still for shipment. On Thurs- jay, 7th instant, the mail trom Boston reported the Acadia as having been telegraphed ; the anxiety evinced to obtain later dates from Lierpool, somewhat checked operations.— At 5 P.M., we received z. express, Wilmer & Smith’s “Times,” with Liverpool dates to 19th November; the ac- counts of the Cotton Market bein; was antici |, sales of about 1200 lecline of Je ; on Friday, sued by a less favorable than ales took place ata , Sth instant, there was not much lone, owing in some measure, to th . letters per steamer, the mail being delayed angi sight. se consequence of asnow-storm, the sales were about 1500 bales, still at the decline of jc, in some instances less ; on Saturday 9th, the market was quiet and unsettled, holders being indisposed Lng ped to accept any reduction from the rates current in the early part of the week, and buy- ers disinclined to operate, the sales this day were small; on the 1th instant, the market opened with a better feel- ing,and more disposition to purchase was manifested, but a slight reduction was required, and not being accepted by aolders, only 1000 bales were sold, generally at a decline of fe from the highest point last ‘week; on the 12th the ‘eeling was still better, and the sales were 2500 bales, at prices, except in one or two instances, fully equal to those current on the 6th inst., or the highest point this season, the operations this day’ being mostly on specula- tion; yesterday, Wednesday, 13th inst., sales were about 1500 bales, generally at the full prices of the day prece: ling. The market, as will be seen by the operations above referred to, is not influenced to that extent, as is generally the case, or indeed, as we might expect, by the European news; a large amount of cotton lately received, and daily arriving, is being put in store, and held for Southern account, with in structions to hold regardless of foreign markets, until prices above our present quotations can be realized ; the extreme facility with which money can be obtained, and the low rate of interest tends in a great measure to aid the desire to hold, A feeling almost eral throughout the sountry, if we may judge from the tone of letters, from she various points, and the advancing price of the in all the large markets, that Cotton will rule higher, becoming very apparent; the grounds upon which his opinion is based being in part a short crop, on which subject we have no new feature to offer; that some idea may be formed of opinions here, we merel: state that on the 11th inst., we made offers on severel thot sand bales of cotton, in various hands, and in only one in- stance, were we enabled to make asale, at adecline of over jc from the highest point last week. The quality, va werstated in our last circular, is falling off, and dne cot. tons will soon, even thus early in the season, become very scarce, and com eratively hi h.” STEWART & WRIGHT, Brokers, corner Wall and Water streets. corn Tr. "This is because the canals at the north remained opened to a later period this year, and because the produ- cers and interior agents pushed forward their supplies with greater activity. Exports of all articles, the produce of sections near the outlet into the Gulf, have increased, and the falling off has been only in flour, wheat, &c.; the production of the West, Now that northern navigation is closed, receipts, and therefore, exports from New Or- leans will be large for the rest of the seuson. As one ont let is shut another is opened; so the supplies over the whole country are constantly kept equalized. ‘There can never be in the United States a scarcity for any length of time in one market and an abundance in another. It is said that a company been formed in Boston of large capital, who are now. building an extensive esta- blishment at Southbridge, Mass., composed of several buildings—one of them being over one hundred feet in length, for the manufacture of Mouselin de Laine. This company intend prosecuting the business on a scale equal to any in France or England, besides consuming an immense ergo of wool, which will increase the demand for this staple at the west. It is but aboutfive years sincs the subject of wool-grow- ing was agitated in Michigan, That peninsula has now its half million of sheep, and woollen factories are talked of. In some sections foundations are already laid for their su- perstructure, and in others large mills are erected.
