James Gorpon Benner, Esq.— Dear Sin— We have had a most delightful day, clear, cold, bracing to the nerves, anda capital promoter of health. The churches were consequently filled with beauty and fashion,,devout saints,¥and care- less sinners, and of the idle and curious, a great number, Francis J. Grund, Esq., has withdrawn the charge of libel Gra by Ais against Mr. Wol- lenweber, editor of the German newspaper “Der Demokrat,” Mr. W. having publicly acknowledged that no reference was made prejudicial to the character of Mr. Grund in the article published, and for which suit was brought. The Recorder of the city, Richard Vaux, Esq., accompanied by officer George Hoftaer, within a day or two visited a house in Spri Garden, and by knocking against one of the walls, discovered the whereabouts of two boxes, about three feet long and six inches square, which were suspended from the floor joist by ropes, and which was found to contain steel transfer rollers, upon which were engraved fac similes of a large number of the notes of the different banks in this, and other States. There were other articles also discovered, ich were doubtless to be used for the purpore of extensively counterfeiting bank notes. | ‘The vast ible cost at which the rollers alone could be ‘timated at the large sum of fifteen thousand dol- lars, showing that but for the timely interference of the energetic Recorder and invaluable officer, and their suc- cess in the discovery of the means of so much mischief, reat loss to the community may have ensued, I hope to pe furnished with further particulars of this matter to- morrow. Yesterday morning, Hiram Cole, Charles Lelar, and Joseph Sexton, were charged before ‘the Mayor with riot, and assault and battery with a knife, the night previous, upon the proprietor of the William Penn Hotel in Letitia Court. its a] 1s that a ball given in aid of some person was bein, eld at this house, which is kept by Gotlei) Zimmerman, and that the defendants at- tempted to enter the ball room without paying, which was resisted by Zimmerman, and in the scuffle the woundjwas inflicted, Pahigh is not considered serio After an examination they were each held to bail in the sum of five hundred dollars for their appearance at the Quarter Sessions. made, is The Judges of the District Court yesterday appointed John K, Kane, Thos.@A, Budd, Eli K. Captain Tustins splendid corps of National Guards will givetheir second Annual Ball to-morrow (Monday) night, at the Musical Fund Hall, and it promises to be a most brilliant affar. On Monday night, at the Arch, which will be opened under Deverna, of the Chatham, we are to have the “Honey Moen,” in which Jamison, Whetham and Mrs. Anderson will perform. At the Chesnut, for Hackett’s benefit, a strong bill—" The Man of the World”—Hackett for the first time as Sir Pertinax Mac Sycophant. They could make or mar the fortunes of the planters, and wielded as great an influence on the crop ofthat State, as the United States Bank did on that of | the Union. So long as this Bank is_in existence, the plan- ters of that State will be in daily danger of having a repe- tition of the scenes of 1842 and 1843. The Bank at pre- sent is powerless, but its officers are ready and disposed to adopt the first favorable moment to practice the same game again. The exposure we made of this concern about sixty. days since, has, we hope, opened the eyes of the people in that neighborhood, and placed them on their guard for the future, At the time we made the expose, several or the directors of the Bankjof Mobile were making arrange. ments to expand their banking movements, prior to a grand explosion, which, if successful, would have sacri- ficed the little wealth and energy left from the wreck of the banking mania the State of Alabamu has been inflicted with. The great improvement in Alabama State funds in this city, notwithstanding the efforts made by the Bank of Mobile to depreciate their value at home and abroad, gives us strong hopes that the influence of that institution is de- stroyed as thoroughly in Alabama as it is out. just as good as gold. They have managed to rum themselves and all who After having passed through years of depression and bank- ruptcy, the people of that State have a broad field open before them, unspotted by any offensive fixture, save one—the Bank of Mobile. They have the experience of other States to govern them, and in establishing a cur- rency, let it be on a specie basis. Alabama is destined to be one of the richest States in the Union. She has the strongest cotton soil in the country—her mineral re- sources are unbounded, and the energies of her people only require to be left unfettered, and not subject to the blighting influence of unprincipled financial speculators, who thrive on the ruin of others,to place them far above their present condition. The time has passed by for the banks to govern the currency of any particular section of the country. The movements of trade are now governed by private honses, Individual concerns in Mobile and Montgomery, have done moreto regulate and reduce the rate of domestic exchanges, than all the banks in the Union would, even if they could. Messrs. St. John, Powers *& Co. of Mobile, have done for that city what Jacob Little & Co. and others have for New York; they have been the principal instruments in bringing exchanges hetween the two cities from 17 a 18 per cent discount, down to 6Ja6} do.
