Sunday, Dec. 3—6 P. M. ‘The week just closed has exhibited many of the fluctu- ating features that an abundant supply of money always produces when in want of employment. Stocks began the week by a decline, which was kept up three or four days showing a falling off of one or two per cent every day. Yesterday a slight reaction took place in all descriptions, which—after to-morrow, which is usually blue day—in the present state of the money market, must be maintain ed. Several brokers have made fortunes, and have alrea- dy began the extravagance that surely follows the sudden acquisition of wealth, ‘The late great advance in stocks has given the brokers some fine game to pluck. Indi- viduals of capital have been indueed to take hold of sume of the most dangerous stocks, and have walked out of the street completely used up. ‘This is what the speculators in the street like—it is what they live on, They have fleeced each other so long, that they have nothing left, and their only dependence; now is, that the late rise in stocks will tempt the unsophisticated to risk their re- sources in this species of gambling. As an instance of the ups and downs, and dangers of this business, we give the Patces ov Sroces iw 1u1s Manker, Now. 27. 29, Dee. 1 ow. st % 09g 8. w 66 606 40, 9 38) a AMOS BELDEN, Chairman. ih rhe above are as principal fancy stocks used in the street—they vary from day to day, just enough to suit the parties interested in their movements, and just sufficient to catch the unwary. ‘The most staple article s of produce have maintained a regularity of prices that marks the natural state of trade. ‘There is no influence to work on present prices but the demand and supply. ‘There is no overstock in this market of any one article sufficient to enable speculators to mo- nopolise the traffic, orto bring down prices to a level much lower than the present quotations. All branches of business are now rather inactive—the season has gone by, and every one has made provisions for afew months quiet, by reducing his stock to hold over. The market throngh the fall has been generally a rising one. Prices began at the lowest point, anda regular gradual increase has been sustained. This has been created by the small importations, and fair demand for consumption. It has also been caused by the control over the importations be- ing in the hands of individuals, whos have a thorough knowledge of the actual wants of the country, The sales have been confined to short credits, which give quick re- turns, and enables houses of limited capitals to do a fair amount of business. The causes of the difference in the amounts, from year to year, depend on so many incidental local ‘acts, that the result of the official returns, unless embo- lied with the state of those causes, can lead to no definite sonclusions :. The amount of imports and exports, do not, however, vary so much in the declared value as prices have, The annual quantity of produce and manufac- tures have increased larger in bulk, to reach the increased amount, than appears visible, ‘The increase of population is steady, culating medium, varies prices of wages and necessaries of life so materially, that the result is totally different in fact, to what it appears from official returns, As an in stance of the truth of this position, the products of thi country/areso great—the staple, cotton for instance— that the slightest variation in price will increase or de crease the total value so much, that without considering” these causes, the result would have a very different effect from what it should. The proportion of specie to the cir- culation, depreciates or increases the value of paper. In 1941, the proportion was one to four, and the declared value of the exports seven millions more than they were in 1839, when the proportion of specie to paper was as 1 to3. The harvests of Great Britain have a more sensible effect on the people, than those of any other country, and th exports and imports, The following table will define the position we refer to, as regards value of imports and exports. The quantity and price vary so much, that they are of the utmost im- portance in arriving at the actual condition of the people producing the various articles of commerce. In pro ducing our crop of cotton, the cost of cultivation de- pends entirely on the prices of the necessaries of life, they depend on the state of the currency, the state of the currency on the administrations of twenty-six govern” ments, which are subject to the voice of the people every ‘ear or two: Exports or Corton From tue Uniten Starrs ro, anv Prices In Great Brrrain, ales.
