The receipts of specie at Mobile on the 16th inst., were $136,600, and on the 17th $26,000. ‘The Governor of Alubama has postponed to the 18th of December the vale of real estate belonging to the branch of the Bank of the State of Alabama, at Mobile, which has gone into liquidation. The stockholders of the Franklin Bank of Cin- cinnati, sometime since, passed resolutions to wind up {its affairs, and dissolve the institution. Since the late election in Ohio, the trustees of the bank have changed their minds, thinking the party in power would renew and extend their charter. They accordingly addressed the eastern stockholders, suggesting the importance of continuing the business ofthe bank. A meeting of parties interested was held in this city on the 13th inst., when they unanimously agreed to have the affairs of the bank liquidated as soon as possible, and that a division ef the capital and assets be made as soon as the interests of the stockholders will admit. The Governor of Georgia, in a special message to the Legislature of that State, in relation to the affairs of the Central Bank, urges that body to adopt measiires to in- crease the value of the circulation of the bank. poses to require the bank to issue certificates of deposite , in sums not less than fifty dollars, for the redemption of its circulation, which shall bear an interest at the rate of an eighth per cent per annum, and be redeemed at the end of eighteen months, or sooner, at the will of the bank. The bank has gone into liquidation, and makes no discounts ‘ing interest to its bill holders instead of paying specie. ‘The State has used the depreci. ated bills of this bank to pay its creditors, which has caused this move of the Governor. The Phenix Bank of Columbus, Ga.; received $60,000, on the 21st, for the north, A bill has been introduced into the Tennessee Assembly to incorporate the Traders’ and Farmers’ Bank of Tennes- see, with acapital of $600,000, of which $400,000 is to be subscribed by the State, which passed a first reading. The States of this Union have contracted large debts in loaning their credits to banks; many of those debts they repudiate; and still they follow the same policy that com- pelled them to disown legal loans, Honest principles have not taken any root in our legislative councils. On New Orleans the quota- tions are at apremium, The value of Nobile currency is fast increasing, and a short time will suftice to place Ala- bama funds nearly at par in this city. A merchant from Mobile visited the city of New York this fall and made ex- tensive purchases of our merchants, on acredit of six months, for which he gave his notes. He brought with him a large amount in Alabama funds, which he made ef. forts to sell for current money in Wall street. Not being able to do soat the rate he wished, he proposed to those houses holding his notes, to pay them in Alabama funds, ‘This proposition was immediately accepted, and he got rid of about fifteen thousand dollars in bills that are at present quoted at 8}.a9 per cent discount ‘This will eventually prove a. good operation to th received the bills, for before the six months expires—the time the notes had to run—this money will be nearly par, eurrent funds the time the southern merchant would have been com- pelled to do so by the maturity of his obligations: The benefits arrising from this great equalization of ex- changes can be directly traced to three causes. first is the contraction of the currency throughout the whole Union. The general improvement of trade, and its independence of bank fagilities, and the confinement of the business of regulating prices to individuals, and not to corporations, who, by combinations, keep up rates ex- orbitantly high. The operations in domestic exchange are now carried on almost entirely by private bankers, in Wall street; by an equal distribution of their capital among all the important business centres, they are enabled to bring down prices, and create a regularity and equali- zation that can be depended upon by mercantile men, The inflation of the currency in the southern and western States, above a specie standard, so reduced the value of their circulation that the difference in the value of money between those sections and this established the price of ex- Our last quotations are still current. The immense quantity of produce that has been received here, without acorres- ponding value drawn from us, bringing ns in debt to the large places in other parts of the country, has reduced exchange on these points to a fair and profitable price. The large shipments of specie from the north to the south, for the purpose of purchasing produce, shows conclusively the course of trade; and also proves that the ‘bted to the yorth. So long as each see- tion of the country can demand specie for its products—so the currency of every State is kept at par, and is of equal value from Maine to Georgia—so long as one sec: tion buys no more than it sells—in fact, so long as wo all keep out of debt with each other, and keep independent of the banks, and govern our own exchanges, the rates will be very uniform and reasonable, Individual houses, with and responsibility, can control our domestic exchanges far better than all the extrava- gant banks of the country. There are two ‘reat sources of what may called extraneous demand, in the United States, for pork. One is the naval and com- mercial marine ; and the other is for the West Indies and other foreign ports. The contracts for Navy pork, at the principal Navy Yards, include about 8,000 Is. The entire Commercial and Naval Marine of the United Stat requires, therefore, not far from 100,000 barrels of Pork, and we should think the demand for all foreign ports nearly equal to that. Extraneous, then, to the domestic consumption in families, there is an outward demand of about two hundred thousand barrels of Pork, which de- mand in a great degree regulates the market. We cannot see that the demand will be materially changed from what it was last year, As to the supply, there are two cireum- stances only to be noticed. The ‘first is that taken in the SaEseans ere is perhaps, a little lighter crop of Corn, which may diminish the generalgfeeding of hoy ly, there is a larger stock of pork on hand at New Orleans and other ports, than there was last year, ‘These two facts will just about balance each other, and produce no consi- derable effect on price.
