Dear Bennerr— Besides the promise made you in iny last, 1 have other inducements to continue my correspondence The great interest that “Charley” has awakened in the circles of the fair sex, is so flattering to his feelings, that he feels encouraged, nowwithstanding the contempt affeeted by the would-be-considered nice, in still contributing his mite to the amuse- ment of the numerous readers of your valuable pa- and at the same time, with the best of feelings , “shoot folly as it flies.” Matters spiritual should have our first attention; and to convince the good people of our little city that we have ever in our mind this great and im- portant duty, we proceed to give you information from our principal churches. The Episcop: pened their new church with a sermon by their bishop, Otey. Whether or not it was spiced by his usual illiberal denuncia- tions against other denominations, we ace unable to say, as we did not attend; for we should confess in bold language that anticipated the neglect of the beautiful sisters of Faith and Hope, and reli- giously kept aloof. ‘The Methodists, the largest and noisiest denomi- nation we have among us, are too much engaged in rearing up their beautiful building to pay as much attention to their shouting business as to attract at- tention from our pen, The Presbyterians have quarrelled with their par- son, and been behaving very bad for the last few months. Madam Rumor. asserts that there will be a split in the church, which will make another “bypath” to bewilder the poor sinner in his search for the right way. ‘The Catholics have with them at present their very talented and amiable bishop. He has been confined to his room. by indisposition the principal part of the time he has been here, havi yet heen able to preach but once, when we had the pleasure of hearing him, His "discourse was upon Christian Charity, a subject upon which our cle: appear to have very little know ly hope, for the honor of the ‘sacred des! it ey for the future have from them more atten- tion, both i in practice and theory. ‘ The “snowy staple” of our State is coming to market very fast, giving to all classes of our citi- zens a great deal ‘of business. Tt is commana a fee that very well remunerates the planter for his labor. A great many buyers are here from New Orleans, thus taking much of the legitimate busi- ness from our enterprising commission merchants. ‘The principal streets of business are literally crowded with dry goods, and notwithstanding this, we frequently hear our principal merchants regret that the: Hluieiey make farger purchases whilst at the north, ‘The mechanics, too, are all busy, en- gaged at the highest prices, and “the young giant of the west” has on his seven league boots, mak- ing rapid strides towards wealth and importance. Some few weeks since we had a great farce en- acted in our neighborhood, viz:—a grand militia muster. It was the first time we ever saw one in the state and to take it altogether was the richest affair of the kind we ever witnessed. militia were received by their Brigadier who, bye the bye, is said to bear a strong re- semblance to Napoleon Bonapart The farce wound up by a speech from the General, which was in excellent keeping with the performance of the ibis, We have, as yet, no theatre here this season, and we know of no place in the whole country where a small company, possessing respectable talents, would be better supported. Do try and prevail upon some of your actors, who are perhaps daing little or nothing in your city, to pack up and pay us a_ visit; we feel assured that a iheatibal corps here, in the hands of a competentmanager, must certainly make money; our citizens are ge! nerally tasty and great lovers of the drama. Last evening we attended the concert given by the friends of the Episcopal Church, for the pur- pose of calling in the uid of the citizens in purchae- ing an organ for the new church. To say that we were highly pleased at the performance would be to tell no less than truth; but if it be more expressive, we do not hesitate to avow that we were delighted. It was under the management of Messrs. and Miller, two gentle nen eminent in the profession of the “divine art;” they were assisted by several ladies and gentlemen, as amateurs. It would indeed almost seem invidious in ize, $0 eX- cellent was the performar et we acknowledge our decided preference to vo trate: We hope that it will not be considered ill-natured for usto award the palm to the yeung lady who sang the songs se- leeted for the evening. We have never. rd without the walls of the opera house her voic - celled, and but rarely, even in that “home of the singer,” any that came so near our conception of verfection. She was much indebted for its fine ef- Fact upon the audience to Mr. Miller’s admirable performance: e upon the piano. Mons. Barbiere’s finest strokes upon the guitar were conapletely lost to fis, from the circumstance of our hi appening: ie. be seated in the neighborhood of a number of ladies and gentlemen who manifesied much greater plea- sure at hearing each other talk than any of the p formers could afford them; but pshaw! what spirited gentleman, particularly one that has a high opinion of his conversational powers, would not rather hear himself talk than merely listen to a man endeavor- ing to make masic by thumping upon the strings of We could see the motions of our fe vee n, and well do we know, from former ¢ that music came at his bid. The audience at the concert was composed of the elite of the city, and would bear a comparison, for its refinement and decorum, with any in the world, It is true that we have among us a distinct set of beings, who hang upon society, and are sometimes noticed by our first ladies (we suppose for their “lap dog” docility,) called ‘‘dandies;” some of them made their appearance last evening as usual, among their betters. They differ here somewhat from your Broadway dandy, more resembling the ape, than the real animal; they answer also differ- ent purposes; the hair is, as usual among the class, dressed very sleek, and the ladies, with their usual tax them, as they do all the weaker crea- tures, but very lightly. r instance, whe becomes tired of her bouquet, if she is at pergence, It popu- lar, she has one of those handy creatures ather side, and thrusts it into his hand. He is very prond of the honor; and, after this, you will see him stand- ing in the most prominent part of the concert room, | gracefully performing the office of a mantel orna- ment. The concert was the first fashionable assemblage we have attended since our last; and it is with pleasure we notice a decided improvement, in the dress of the ladi The hair on this occasion was dressed with that symplicity that betokens the finest taste, and the head altogether was divested of that vulgar finery that distinguishes the charac- ter of the old woman in “ Handy Andy.’ Besides this great improvement, we take great pleasure in announcing the decline of bustle we confess, though we do not know, that o ves are justly entitled to the credit of first giving a veto to this stern mandate of fashion. Glad, indeed, are we though, whether this be the case or not, that they »m willing to return to the ‘modesty of nature. The commissioners, appointed by government for the survey of our harbor, to ascertain its fitness for a Naval depot, have finished their lab and leave us with a favorable report. Next came a number of boats con- taining the Emperor’s household, and the proces- rable Brazilian und Nea- sion tailed off with roe jolitan boats of all sizes and shapes. ‘The young Juke of Tuscany, brothet to the Princess Theresa, and Ist Lieutenant of the Neopolitan oka deh acted as Marshal. His bride isa comely, and rather handsome girl. I should presume about twenty years of age.
