Of its interesting proceedings we regret that we cannot give a more full report. We have, however, done all that lay in our power. Professor Revere’s Lecture last Evening upon Homoeopathy. Stuyvesant Jnstitute Leeture Room was crowded last evening to excess to hear Professor Revere’s lecture upon Homaopathy. The three hundred students who have already arrived, together with mauy of the Faculty were in attendance. Hanne- mavn, and his Latin motto, Similia similibus curavat —like cures like—were handled without gloves. Frequent rounds of applause testified the pleasure it gave the audience to hear the doctrines of homao- pathy exploded. Hannemann himself, the great founder of the doctrine, was treated as a man with the greatest respect. Professor R. said he wes dis tinguished eminently for his sincerity, honesty, af- fection, dignity, amenity, and philanthropy. He was a German, aad the peculiarities of his doctrines belonged rather to his age and country than to him- self. They were (rom the same country that gave birth to Swedentorgianism acd transcendentalism Tn relation to homeopathy itself, Professor R eaamined, discussed, and dissected 11 to a nicety> which astonished all believers in the atome theo- ry. Not a little of the euecess of the doctrine must be attributed to its beautiful and euphoni- ous name—homeopathy—or as some pronounce it, home-op-athy—how sweetly it glides from the toneue, and falls upon the ear. It is a classic name, and there must be virtue in its doc. ‘fines. There is something altogether ad captan- dum ina Greek or a Latin name. Take, for exam- ple, the name of Tricopherous from the celebrated Broadway Saloon of Parisian fashion. It has vir- tue sufficient to raise’ a crop of hair from the bald head of age and decripitude. Then there is the Anthropopoion, which had the honor of being used by no less a personage tham Tittlebut Titmouse, Feq., whose hair it turned from carrotty red toa brilliant pea green. How much better were such names than the plain and vulgar names of Smithisra, Richardsonism and Shermanism Tn relation to the infinitismal doses of homaopa- thy, Professor Revere was rather severe. The principle generally believed in was, that effects in- creased with their causes—all the parts were equal to the whole. It a glass of brandy produces but Ilttle effect, a pint might get a man tipsey. If a grainof opium would make aman doze, filty graina would puthim tosleep. But homaopathy taught a dif- ferent doctrine. That effects increase as the cause decreases. That a part is not ony equal tothe whole, but far greater. In some cases homeopathy adininistered not only the thousandth part of a grain, but itwent down to the millioneth, billion- eth, trillioneth, quatrillioneth, quintillioneth, and even a decillioneth part of a grain. The usual method of administering a very small dose was to dissoive itin a large quantity of water. Now, to beable to administer_the billionth part of a grain of corrosive sublimate, it would reqire 217.000 hoge- heads «f water (Applause) A decillion (1,000,000, 000 606 000,000. 000, 000, 000, 000, 000,000,000,000, 000, 91:0 400,000 000 000,) transcends all human concep- ti or calculation; yet the Professor said that a friend of his had estimated from a_se- nies of figures that all the waters of the Che- sapeake ond Delaware Bays umted would en- able a hommeopathic doctor to administer the decillioneth part of a grain of arsenic. (Great ap- plause) A litle medicine, as large as a grain of mustard seed, was in one instance put ina phial, and the smell! of it once a day by the patient cured him. this phial would be good for at leastfour years. la another case, the stnell of one grain of gold ina bottle cured a patient mone hour’s time. In ano- ther case, a homeopathic doctor supplied a mother witha chest of medicine. Sugar and milk, by the way, are prominent articles of medicine in this doc. trine. The mother one day stepped out for a few minutes, and upon her return was horritied to discever that her child had swallowed the whole chest of medicine. In infinite slarm she sent for the doctor whe found the child sitting bolt upright upon the floor with the marks of the medicine upon his face. The doctor told the anxious mother that her child had swallow- ed too much homa@opathic medicine to do it any harm, (loud cheering ) in conclusion, Professor Revere quoted the fol- lowing EPIGRAM. Your homm@opatuic doses, sir, een suit me toa be ‘hey prove of physic any how. ‘You casuct ties too litte. z I{ it be good in all complaints, 'o take a dose so small, Iteurely must be better still, To take no dose at all. Tueratrica, Movements.—Theatrical business still keeps improving in every direction—eo does musical—so does literary—so does the cotton, corn, and currency trade. Mr. Macready cleared nearly $8000 by his first engagement at the Park. He 18 now in Philadel- phia, end will probably make as muh there. By next May he can make $50,000 in the United States, if he manages with skill and tact. Boz can’t make that. His style of acting creates curiosity and gen- tle pleasure—not enthusiasm or uproer. Forrest has begen a good engagement at the Park. ‘The attempt to hiss him from the stage, set on foot by some foolish subterraneans, failed—but Forrest lost his temper by it, and abused those very persons and papers who helped to get him out of the difficulty. How strange and perverse! Jem Crow is on his way to Baltimore to crow there next week. The other actors and sctresses are here, there, and everywhere. Tn musical matters, Cinti Damoreau is just now inthe sscendant. She has given three concerts, yielding probably $3000. She gives another and then proceeds to Boston Madame Sutton is here preparing for oprra~Castellan is here, but we don’t know whet she is about. The Seguin troupe is in Baltimore. In short, theatricals, music, dancing, and all such things are improving rapidly in these latitudes. Cratiam Tararre. —It was a funny scene the other night to witness the rivalry between the par- ties, friends of the two pretty dancers, Miss Rallia and Mise Partington, At least a dozen wreath: aad bouquets were thrown upon the etage, and as the pretty nymphs were successively called out, a shower of silver and gold coin followed, which would remind the audience of a profuse hail storm. Oa taking an account of stock, we believe Mi Rallia came out a few dollars ahead. The same trial will take place again to night. In truth 3}a4 per cent for interest now bears the same proportion to the profits in ordinary business as did 6.a7 percent interest afew years since to the profits then accruing on business. ‘The only business in this country now which yields large profits are Intur- ence offices and Eastern Manufacturing Stocks. The Otis cotton mills at Ware have just declared a dividend of ten per cent, and nine bas been paid for the November dividend of the Merrimac Company at Lowell. The true cause ef these increased profits of corporate com. panies arises from the low prices which they pay the operatives for labor and to the farmers and planters for the raw material and supplies. The wealth of the coun” try is accumulating as in England, heretofore, in the hands of corporate manufacturing associations. A curious effect ef the proeperity of the manufacturers is the decline of agriculture in their immediate neighbor. hood; a fact, in the veny teeth of oll theory upon the subject. An individual traversing New England, in any direction, will scarcely be able to fiad a farm which is not for sale; not only willing to sell, but eager to sell, Take up a country New England newspoper, and whole sidesare filled with advertised farms, the preprietors of which have been ruined by the ascendency ofthe maau fact: ring interests, In the nsigaberbood of Lowell these features are more marked than any where else. The farmers do not find purchasers, and that whole section is sinkmg into the same state as Lancashire in England, viz: extreme sgricultural poverty, low manufacturing wages and enormously wealthy master manufacturers. ‘The stock market presents the same features that have marked its progress during the last fow months, viz: a continued rise, accompanied by violent fluctuations.
