SOUTHERN MAIL Philadelphia. (Correspondence of the Herald.) Puiavevruia, Oct.{28, 1843. The Weather—The Ladies—Franktin Institute— Wallace's Concert— Theatrwals—Sheriff’s Office— James Buchanan—Forny, of the Lancaster Intlli« Bencer— Business. Jamns Gorvon Bennett, Esq.— Dear Sin:— r This is a most delightful day ; the wind north- west, bracing’ and healthy; and Seem street thronged with the gentler sex, numbers of them on their way to and return trom "the exhibision of the Franklia Inatitate, which still continues to be crowded daily ‘and nightly with. all claeses of peo- ple {was informed this morning, during a short visitthere, by Charles B. Gregs, » one of the geatlemaaly and polite managers, chat yesterday ‘was the most productive day to the Institute, pecu- niarily, of any since the opening. ‘This is the more singular, as the day was certainly the most unplea- nt, “ : ea Valllace’s Concert last night atthe Musical Fund wasjnot so well attended as this talented artist emisently deserved. During the performance he wes most rapturously applauded, and at the close the shouts of bravo from numbers evinced the great gratification given. The weather, I opine, isthe only reason why the room was not crowded. A second Concert will no doubt produce a result so much to be desired, and as a fair reward to one so well entitled as this great performer undoubted- ly is. ea Tanticipatea, the National was crowded to see Forrest as Hamlet, which he personuted ,with great skilland exquisite taste. I regret thissterling actor 18 not bettersupported—it ceriainly mars the performance much, and detracts from his deserved tame. Without being invidious, and excepting Mr. Ox'ey, who is a most excellent pertormer, and ex- emplary man, and ourlaughier moving Wemyss, 1 can s.y littl: for the male members of the establish- ment; those I mean who have been placed in promi- neot parts during Mr. Forrest’s engagemeat. The worthy lessees deserve to succeed, and [ taink it is essential that a reform should be made in some par- ticulars to engure “a consummation (01) devoutly tobe wished” While oa the subject I must accord just praise to Mrs. Knight, who performs her parts judiciously, and to Mrs. Lewis, who is in many in- stances rerliv excellent. k To-night, Richelieu at both houces, with Forrest and Macready; at the Walnnt etreet, the Virgia ia Minstrels, being their benefit, and Burton witha greut billfor his farewell atthe Arch. He has se- cured the appearance ot the “ Wild Boy,” now ex- hibiting at the Masonic Hall, to lend to the even- ing’s attraction. He will of course have a bum- per at parting. I negieeted in my last to mention that young Vandenhoff elicited praise for the very excellent periormance of Ulric on Thursday night at'h- Ches- nut. Tamessured that this is only justice tobim. Passing Miss Chariotte Cushman aad Mr. V. on the promenede in Chesnut sireet, this afternoon, re- minded me Ishould have said this before. He will appear in the part of De Mauprat to-night, with acready at the Chesnut. No new appointments to-day by the new Sheriff ‘The ** Daily Foram” now owned by Bela Badger, has been fortunate enough to secure the advertising. ‘The printing bas been given to Col, Charles Alex- ander, his paper, the ** Daily Chronicle,” being one ot the official advertising papers. This willbea great pecuniary lossto the ** Times” and ** Mercu- ry,” heretofore the adveriisiug medium of the sher- ifi's office. The Hon. James Buchanan, our State Senator, and the Pennsylvania eandidate forthe Presidency, is still at Head’s Mansion House,South Third street. He has been visited by a large numberof our citi- zens, and the impression he has made is decidedly favorable. We has considerable strength here— zome of the most prominent Demoerats in this coun- tv preterring him to any other candidate for the Presidency. He will remain inthe city for several days. Forney, of the Lancaster Intelligencer, has also been with us for a day or two—he is the fiem friend of Mr. Buchanan, and his greatest champion. He was a candidate for the Legislature at the re- cent election, but the Whig strength ae OG much forthe Democrats, he was defeated. He would have been, itelected, a most industrious, able and aptelligent member, Business is rather flat, and has beenall the week, the inclemsney of the weather even preventing the usual activity in aretail way. We canaot expect much, however, of any kind, asthe season is tco far advanced. Ovr merchants speak confidently of an early and large spring business. Yours, &c. fice Kisdon Bacon, the colored waiter at the Pralidetphia Uoied States Hotel, who found and appropriated to his own use, two one thousand dol- Jar bi's, which were tost by a gentleman from the fox'h, was committed yesterday by the Mayor, in detanit of $2,000 bail. jSales of Stocks at Secon Boaxn, Oct. 27 ‘Tenn 64; $290 State F raers’and M 6: 10 sbares tate 6's, cash 6's, Ist Juty, 8945 new ann’l, 1545, 63; $650 do 6's, ol do do, 66; 10 shares Manufac’s and Mech’s Bank, 19}; 3 do Febnyllell Navigation, 36}; 80 do New Orlesns Gas jank, 21 Fivst Boann, Oct. 23-89'vb: Manufae’s and Mech’s Bank, 19), 20 dodo 194; $1000 Tenn Bonds, 5’. At the new board, sales were not largo, but prices were better. At the date of our last advices {rom England, the quan: tity of wheat released from bund under the low duties ‘was in London 359,000 quarters; Leith, 90,000; Newe: tle, 90,000; other ports, 170,000—making for the whole kingdom 700,000 quarters. The old free foreign on hand ondthat onthe way, it was estimated would swell the supply of foreign to 1,000,000 quartera, or about 8,000,000 bushels. We find among our English files the following state- ments of the cost of making pig iron in Scotland : Cost or Maxina Inox ix ScotLann, i Cost at the raised rates paid ind, 45 Cost at low rates. on black Ztonsraweoal.ts, 8s Od. i refuse coal, lo 1}6 tos blaek band, cel- eed, 12 6 wt. lime stone, 14 gewn ‘ages & contingenc’s, 11 0 Total cost per ton, £1 19 4 U.S, ewrency, $8 00 ‘The duty on this iron imported into the United Statcs is $9, being 100 per cent, and its price in the New York market now is 27 to $29, American pig iron, No.1, is 25 to $28 50. In 1819, the duty on the iron was for the lest two mouths 20 per cent, and for the first ten months 29 Der cent,or about $2 per ton; and the import was 186 tons, at an average cost of $15 80 cents; on this costa duty of $9, gives 24 80, leaving at the Present price about $2 to cover charges, expenses, and importers’ profi's. Now, according to the census, there were pro: duced in the United States in 1810, 295,903 tons. That amount it is probable -wasincreased to 300,000 ton s in 1942. Tho price w: tained to nearly the level of the imported iron, which is of the best quality. The price of the imported iron is now $7 per ton higher than it would bo ifa revenue duty of $2 only were imposed — Hence the tax paid annually by the consumers of Ameri Cav iron to the owners of the mines amounts on the whole Production to $2,109,000, ‘This tax is averaged upon eve- ry plough, spade, hoe, and axe, used in the country, and $0 far enhances the cost of producing grain. ‘The physical avon ges of Great Britain in producing iron, are such &s to dofy competition. The localities of the coal, the ore, and the limestone, are such asto reduce the cost of manu- facture by diminishing labor beyon 1 what is requisite in any other country. In relation to iron, she has the same vaniages over this country, as has China in ralation to ‘The latter may be raived inthe United States 3 bur no one wonld serious!y pretend to compete with China in its proiuctions; yet in a degree, the attempt to compete with Englant in cheap iron is equally futile. The st tempt 0 dose by levying a tax of $2,000,000 upon the peo ple for the purpose of applying it os a bounty to iron Twisters, is oppressive in the extreme, a well as impolitic. It only enhances the profits, and adds tothe wealth of the minors without in any degreo improving the condition of the operatives, te the Stock Exchange 0 N OC 1 & Bk; 100 Cantoa Co LL Mohawk RR 2000 4 di 25 do 30 3755 Ce 859 Long faland RR 28 "s. do $500 Ohio Cs, ee 20 = do 52% 4000 0 50 do 3 508 5000 jo 130 do. 960 5259 5000 do 150 do boo 55 1000 Ky Bonds 50 do 03 52% 5009 Indiana Bonds 400 Harlem Rit 33 5000 lo 100 do a4 7000 Ilinois Bonds ” do 3 5000 do 100 do do ot me ae 30 0 60 3734 50 dshrs Bank of Com. 9038 30 do 3314 20 Farmers’ Lin & Trust 2150 do 830-3384 Second Board. 75 Harlem RR u% 50 do 930 3144 350) do D3 344, 150 do Bika 2 do 313g 100 Long Island RR 52% Now York Public 1862 cash 115) 6's 1870 s3ds ia Stock Exchange. 50 Harlem RR 50 d> s, 106081595 50 do. b7 95% 25 = do 1000 do 10 9925 100 do 2000 Kentucky 6’ cash 9734 150 do 1000 do 81098 100 do 3000 do Wednesday 98 30 do 1000 Ind Dol Bds, 25yrs lo 37 25 ad 10°0 Illinois 6’ i970 b3 3734 50 do bad b3 36: 25 Long, Island RR lo 2000 do 2000 do 63 37, 50 1000 do 37. 5 do 1000 do baw 37. 50, do 1000 do snw 37 390 do 7:50 shs Diy Dock Bk b2033 175 dy 4 bo do bio gi 100 do 20 do 35. 50 do blo 53 20 Canton Co. 6 39 do M3 32M 75 Harlem Ef 0 +60 525 od wo do 030 53 Cotton Crops.
