— Tue Sea Serrent.—The following extract of a letter from Captain Wales, of the barque Wave, received by the Acadia, 1s copied from the books tthe Merchants’ Exchange Reading Room, Bos- ton:— : — Mataaa, Sept. a am now giving youa lines respecting the long noted ving 3 jonster, which was first discovered by myseli, and erenic viewed by Mr. Lincoln, both officers and part of the crew, who all had a fine view of him for abouta half hour. August 5th, Cape Cod,bearing east by south, 30 miles, discover: ed a huge sea monster crossing our bow about half a mile distant, to the north west, When | first discovered it, T tho! tit was the surf breaking over a beach or — ut immediately it rose in 4 perpendicular position thirty or forty feet above the surtace of the water, remaining for about ten se- conds, and then following horizontally, the body disappeared, leaving awake inthe water, and rising again in the same position, at nearly regular inter- = for the space of half an hour, when it entirely disappeared. Theform of the monste: resembled that of an eel the largest part appearing next the water. Hishead Somewhat smaller than his body, and from the position of the body exposed, should judge it to have been frem ninety to one hundred and twenty feet in length, and the circumference that of a hogs- head. It was about six o’clock in the evening, and we had so good and so long a view of him, that there can be no doubt existing relating to this ser- mt. Ido not write this for the sake of filling up a letter in a mewspaper, but a8 actual facts, and not by any means exaggerated.” ‘Tue Forcrry Case.—Mr. William Goddard, of Petersham, of whose forgeries to the amount of 000, an account has been before published, was arraigned before theCourt of Common Plaas,(Judge Cummins, on Eee! eats upon three several in- dictments. He uilty to them all. Major Aaron Brooks, of Bert ry who has sufiered on account of the forgeries to a considerable extent, ‘was voluntarily put upon the stand to testily to the wstarnished character which Mr. Goddard had always sustained—i' being the purpose of the tesu- mony to appeal to the court in mitigation of punish ment. A deep and painful interest was manilested upon the subject. His Honor took time to censi- der the matier, and on Saturday morning sentenced the defendant to two years confinement and labor in the State prison upon each indictment—in all six years. The individuais who have been detrauded in this case did not appear against the deiendant— partly, perhaps, because it was known that he would surrender himself for the judgment of the Court, and yet further, because of a strong sym: pathy and compassion for the unfortunate criminal. A Meerine on ra Ocran.—In one of our Euro- an papers brought by the Acadia, we find the fol- jowing account of the meeting of a father andson on the broad Atlantic, after some years of seperation. Both of the ships mentioned belong to Bath, Me.— The American ship Rochester, Owen, arrived at Cowes trom New Urieans for orders, on the 5th inst., in birt 47 41 N., longitude 12 00 W.—wind W., and the ship being « close hauled—perceived a large ship to windward, steering her due course ; when af- ter some time and without either of them “having al- tered their course,|they came close to each other. It preved to be the Americam ship South Carolina from Havre tor New Orleans, commanded by Mr. Owen’s father, Moses Owen, whom he had not seen for some years. The weather being fine, Mr. Owen had an Opportunity to pay a visit to his aged parent, and al- ter a short slay, they continued their respective voyages. A Parry or Preasure TURNED 10 a CoMPANY OF Movrners.—A correspondent of the CalaisAdvertis- erstates, that several days since a party of young people at Scotch Ridge,=t James, N. B:, left their homes for acranberry frolic. The distance thay had to travel was about six miles, and in order to get to the bog it was necessary to cross a stream. A raft was constracted, and fourteen young women attempt- ed to cross upon it. When about midway the stream a rotten log in the raft gave way—the raft parted, and the whole were thrown into the stream. Every’ et- fort that great courage could accomplish was put forth to save them, and all save one, by the name of Frazier, were rescued alive. One young man near- ly lost his We in striving to save her, and when she was carried down by the force of the current, and all hope had fled,he persisted in diving until he found her lifeless corpse and bore it te the shore. ‘Ihe party returned through the woods several miles, bearing in their arms the lifeless body of their companion to her father’s house. ey eee ited FORTES. respectfully informs his friends and the J Gablic that be hg Sees his wey estabhshiment, ‘No, 204 Bleecker street a choice assortment of Piano Fortes, which he will sell on the most reasonable terms, For touch and tone—those important considerations with players of experence—he would readily com son with tl t Pianos now in use ; and as lity, he refers to the many and frequent recommenda- is instruments by various professors who have used ‘enn for the last twelve years.
