Terrible Storm in Florida—Total Destruc- tion of a Town—Fourteen Lives Lost, One of the most dreadful hurricanes we ever re- member to have occurred on this continent passed over Florida on the 13:h inst , destroying buildings, lives, and property to an immense amount. The town of Port Leon has almost been swept from the face of the earth. We give below all the particulars of this disaster that have reached us, They are heart-rending enough :— {From the Port Leon Gazette of Sept. 15.] Our city isin rains! We have been visited by one of the most horrible storms thet ever before de- volved upen us to chronicle. On Wednesday about U o'clock A. M, the wind commenced blowing fresh from the south east, bringing up a high tide, but nothing alarming; ath P. M. the wind lulled and tide fell, the weather still ¢ »ounuing lowery. At LL at night the wind freshened, and tide com- imenced flowing, and by 12 o’elock it blew a perfect hurricane, aud the whole town inundated. The gale continued with unabated violence until 2 o'clock, the water making a prjet breach ten feet dep over our town! ihe wind cuddealy lulled for a few minutee aod then came trom south-west with redoubled violence and biew til daybght Every warchouse tm the towa was laid flut with the ground, except one, Hamlin & “ael’s, and apart of tnat also tell Nearly every dwelling was thrown rrom its foundation, uid many of thm cru hed to atoms — ‘The loss of property ts iianien-e Every mbabuant participating inthe |css move or less. None have escaped—imany with only the clothes they stand m Si. Marks suflered in the like proportion with our- selves. But our losses are nothing in comparison with that at the light house. very building but the light house gone. And dreadful to relate, fourteen. Lives lost, and among them some of our most valued citi- zens. We cannotatiempt to eatrmate the loss of each individual at this time, but shalt reserve it un fil our feelings will better enabie us to investigate it. The following is a list of those drowned, so far us heard from :—A erazy negro boy belouging to Tala- hasse ; Capt. M. C Roberison, his wife and three children, and a child of De. Treadwell’s ; Joseph Wood, a portrait painter from ‘Lallahassee ; a child of KR, V. Buffing, and five negroes ‘Those saved are Capt. Hungerford, his wife and two children, Dr. Treadweli’3 yaungest child, Messrs. Oglebee, Blethen and Kennedy, pilots, and | five negroes. Our citizens are now out, looking tor any that may have escaped. and briog the bouiesof | those that may be found. Such a total destruction of property never bas occurred in our place. Our loss is estimated at $250,000. Ia addition to the above, we have learned that the family of Edward Walker, living on Shell Point, wife, children and five or six negroes, all perished Mr. Walkerhim- self escaped by clinging to the branches of a tree, till the waters subsided It is also stated that there are several other persons living at this point, and who have not deen heard from, and of whose sale- ty greatdoubis are entertained. There are also saveral families from this county, in eammer quar. ters on James Island, on whose necount much anx- iety istelt. Indeed such was the violence of the winds end the height to which the ride rose, that our imaginations can scarcely fix limi's to ats rava- ges. Cedar Keys, Apalachicola and St. Joseph, can scarcely have escaped without much damage. (From the Tallahassa Star of Florida.) Extract froma letter dated Bel-Air, (near Talla- hassee,) Sept. I We have been visited by a most dreadful hurricane, far more destructive than the one of last year, for by thismany lives have been lost; whereas with the other the greatest 1jury was to the crops. Oa Wednesday, the 13th inst. we had, about 12 o’elock, M. qnite a heavy rain, when it held up. and to all agpearance looked as if it would clear off; in fact it was so pleasant that at 4 o’clock Rebecea, Jane, Richard and myselt, rode 5 miles to where | had two hands digging lime stone; the sun went down clear, witha beantilul rainbow at the east, with all signs forjair weather the next day. But how short-sighted is man, when he knoweth not what a season may bring forth, for by 12 o’elock that night the wind increased with raiv irom N_ E., and by three o'clock, very few expect- ed a house would be standing at daylight; but to our greatjoy from that time the wind gradually sub- sided, and by sunrise we were inacalm, with ue ry serious lossto auy of yns o! Bel-Air.
