Assault and Battery with Intent to Kill.—A young man named Willism Donnelly, was put upon his trial for an assault and battery, with intent to kili Luke Goodwin, on the 30th August last, by snapping a loaded horse pistol at his, breast. ‘The prosecution proved by Goodwin, that while he was seated in tuetin sLopof Peter Haney, of 101 Houston street, on the above day, some dispute arose as to a decision, giving Patrick Conlan the preference over the accused of finishing a piece of work, he drew a horse pi tol from his breast, and without any cause poses it at him but it didn't go off. Itwas also proved by Hea- that the accused had loaded the pistol a few days pre- vious, and that at the timeof mapping it he took the pis- tol froma shelf in the shop where he had laid it. Heaney admitted that beh were alla little tod®ed, but he could not tell how much they drank or how often they had sent or it. The horse pistol was here presented, and such another coking instrument of death was rarely seen in a court of Justice, The latch ofthe pan was broXen off and the rust that nad corroded it made it lock like an implement of an- cient days. Heaney testified that the pan had been broken by the Grand Jury, as it was in good order when the ac- cured attempted to fire it, although he couldn’t say there wos any priming init. ‘The defence conducted by Exocn E, Camp, considered the character of the testimony for the prosecution so incomplete, and the appearance of the pistol such an argument against any imaginable attempt to kill any body orany living thing, offered no rebutting evidence, and the case was submitted under the charge of the court. Thejury, without leaving their seats, return- ed averdictoi assaultonly, and the court in considera- ionof the accused having been confined since the 5th of tAugust, sentenced him to tendays imprisonment in the city prison. Trials of Mike Walsh.—Several indictments against this person for libel was set down for trial this merning. Davin Gaanaat and R. 8.|Wirson, Esqrs., appeared as counsel for accused and asked a postponement of all the cases until the October term of the court, as also a post- ponement of judgement in those where verdicts had | saa rendered against him. The District Arronney objected to the proceeding uuless the proper affidavits were made by counsel or the accused party of the absence of mate- rial witnesses. An affidavit was then made by counsel stating that the accused was not ready for trial owing to the shortness of time since the indictments were found. er, 0G- TO MOTHERS WHO MAY BE SUFFERING from that painful sffection, sore nipples, and who find it extremely difficult to nurse the child, we would recom. mend Dr. Sherman’s Papillary Oil, is a sure and infallible remedy, and which can be used without Figetdis f the child from the breast. This seeming paradox will be explained by the fact that the relatively lower rate of interest pre- vailing in London than in the provinces,is increvsing the proportion of commercial bills sent to the city for dis- count, which, as a matter of course, enlarges the demand ‘or Bank of England paper, whilst, in a corresponding de- gree it diminishes the use of provincial notes. The reme dy for this will be a reduction in the rete of money in the interior. The Bank published its usual notice, as fol- 'ows :— “The Governor and Compony of the Bonk of England are ready, until further notice, to receive applications for loans on the deposit of approved bills of exchange not having more than six months to run, Exchequer Bills end India Bonds, such loans to be repaid on or brfore the 19th October next, at the rate of three per centum per annum, ynd to be for sums of not less than£2,000 each.—Bank of Englond, 81st August, 1943. This is maintaining the same rates for money as the last fow notices. Money was still offered by the brokers at ‘ormer rates freely, and the payment by the Treasury of £1,500,000 on account of the opium indemnity, threw asupply of money upon the market, which mostly sought stocks ag on investment, cansing activity and a marked rise in stocks. The harvest turns out well, and puts anend to all fears of a drain upon the enormous tock of ballion on that account. In Paris the amount of unemployed capital is also very great. In most departments of trade considerable movement was manifest, and a Manchester circular remarks as fol tows in relation to the China trade :— “The Chinese move slowly ; they donot readily adopt innovations, and some considerable time will be required co getthe new 9 tem, which isto supersede that of Co Hong. fairly and freely into operation. The fact, too. that America has this year contributed totheir supply a quantity at least amounting to one-half of that sent from thiscountry, should not be lost sight of, and thus the wants of the Chinese will be met by shipments from the 1wo brttaigoe MS Af the present time, exceeding one mil- lion three hundred thousand pieces of plain cotton, and nearly cqual to the whole export of such goods from Great Britain for the years 1841 and 1842.” From this statement it would appear that over 400,000 pieces of plain cotton have been sent to Canton this year. ‘The market in relation to American stocks was as follow The prices of American stocks are firm, and no large amounts are oftered for sele ; but, at the same time, there sas yet no general demand for investment, end the pur shasrs continue to be mostly of a speculative character. \laboma Dollar 5 per cent 60, sales, held at 65 per cen' Sterling,70 p rcent.
