MONEY MARKE y Wednesday, Sept. 20-6 P.M. ‘The Stock Market has been less active to-day. ‘There 35 a disposition to await the arrival of the steamer, in the hope that the favorable movement commenced at the Jate of the Jast advices will have increased. Farmers’ Loan rose }; Harlem, }. At the New Board sales were large, with butlitile va riation in rates. itis very evident from the state of the market that cen- filencein the ultimate payment of State debts is daily becoming stronger. ‘This is apparent in the assimilation of prices toeach other. Allthe low priced stocks have advanced, and Ohio, which was the lowest of the divi- dend paying States, has rapidly approached) the level of New York. We may compare the prices of her stocks now with tuoseof New York, and in April last, when ‘he new7 per cent stock was offered, as follows :— sHiril 1, 1043. Sept, 20, 181% 5 a Ohio 6's of 1850+ + 109 a 196 103 a 10835 in April there was a difference of 30 per cent in favor of the New York stock, owing to the discredit of Ohio — Since then the latter has gradually advanced, until the 7 per cen‘s sell as high as those of New York,'while the Ohio 6 per cents are still 12 per cent less than those of N. York. If the 7 per cents are worth as much as those of New York, Ohio 6's of the same time to run are worth the same as those of New York. Hence the latter will tall or the former rise. There 1s now, very little chance of au improvement in the value of money—all the indi cations are of an increased abundance. The rise in stocks has been in the face of large sales on account of rusts closing up. It is stated that one eminent house has remitted abroad since July, $1,000,000 on account of Kentucky, Tennessee and Illinois bonds, being closed trusts. These remittances have formed an extra demand upon exchanges, and have formed alarge supply of stocks upon the market, yet money has lowered in prices and stocks risen. All these are indications that the elements of renewed prosperity are forming themselves into shape ; that there are few or no commercial debts but what can be promptly met, and that but few new ones are contracted. ‘The news from England, in a commercial point of view, is in no degree different from that by the previous packet—money, if possible, is more plenty than ever. The disposition to move in American stocks seems to in- crease with the receipt of every fresh batch of news from this side. The bullion continues to increase in the Bank and the volume of the currency swells much faster than the wantsof business require. The following isa table of the effairs of the Bank for some time :— Bank or ENGLAND. ‘ Rate of curit's. Bullion. Cireuta’n. Deposit, money. Dépos. Bullion. Sept. 104 93,627,200 4 f 00 Me pays see senR HOO SUSLATIO) — L4GsT62 HOD Increase 6,616,100 5,937,100 12,681,400 Decrease 708,800 Now then it appears that the quantity of Bank curren, cy which constitutes the basis of all the credit move. ments of the kingdom, has increased within the year near $6,000,000, and the specie on hand $12,684,000. The increased deposites corresponding with the enhanced amount of bullion, indicates the amount of bankers’ ca- pital in London remsining unemployed. The circulation of the Bank of England being a legal tender, forms forthe most part the basis of all the joint stock ond private Bank” movements throughout the kingdom. Specie is the basis o{the Bank circulation. The Bank circulation is the basis of all the other paper movements of the kingdom. The amount of specie is large and admits of a great increase in the amount of paper, which in its turn sweils the besis for all other paper. this enormous power of ex- pansion, eequired by years of distress, the monetary af- fairs of England are entering upon a year of good crep, with an amount of specie greater almost than ever before The securities or loans are very near the irlowest range, ‘There can be but a few millions of private paper above the usual amounts of Government securities. The in- crease of specie in the Bank since the close of 1849, has been steady and large; and with afair harvest, the insti« tution has ample means to assist Government by pro moting speew ation ia ail directions, and will, as here, evince itself by seizing upon different subjects for spe- culation, Stocks and produce have been effected here, and when the money power begins to move in England, stocks willrun wild there. A paper inflation in England will drive'coin out of the country, whither? is uo Bank here to repel, by/jits inflation, the specie h will tend towards usin return for the advancing prices of our produce there, and it will, in all probability, flow in until every channel of trade is filled. ‘This natural operation of visible causes, will do more to bring about a payment of our State debts than any legislative action which could possibly take place here. Even Pennsylvania will be raised to the level of common honesty in the march of events, Let us eee the progress of trade upon the main line of her public works forthree months of this year as compared with the corresponding svason of last year. Thedemand had been brisk through the week, and prices pdvanced fully {to 4 cent per lb. since the last report.
