State or Taape—Mancuesten, Aug. 8—We had a very extensive demand throughout the week for the su- a, qualities of printiug cloth, and a small advance as been the result on goods of that description, while shirtings, &c. general bought on India and China ac- count, are still very limited in demand, and prices are to day only a shade higher than they were at the lowest point some seven or eight months ago. Domestics continue exceedingly: depressed, and are likely to go still lower. Gray fustians are, if anything, both dull and lower, and stocks very heavy. Twist con: tinues ready sale, and the market very buoyant. A large business is doing. A Stnixe.—The master spinners at Ashton, &c., bring word to-day, that the operatives in the employ of one of the most extensive spimning and weaving con- cerns in that town have struck for higher wages. It appears that the rates paid by various masters vary con- siderably. Discovery of Mineral Springs— Analysis of Watere —Extate of Major Taylor—Soil, Climate, §c.— Orange Groves, Magnolias, §¢. James Gorpon Bennett, Esq. Since the war whoop has died away among the everglades and along the savannas of Flor’ the exciting reports of midnight surprises, maesacres, murderousambushes, swamp fights, W&o., have ceased to greet our eyes, a8 we unfold our morning sheet, this section of our country is begin- ning to be regarded with much interest; and infor- mation respecting its soil, climate, capacities of pro- duction, and general resources, is eagerly sought after. Many erroneous notions respecting it have been corrected, and the experience of those who have resided there proves that portions of it are not only healthy, but admirably adapted to promote that “otium cum dignitate” which we aliso ardently de- sire. The richness of its soil, the luxuriousness of its scenery, the advantages of its location, andthe va- riety ot its productions, all unite to render it one of the loveliest portions of our glorious land—the very garden spot of these United States. But its embedded treasures have not yet been drawn forth. New discoveries of importance are constantly being made. Among them my attention has been called to four remarkable springs, recently discovered on the estate of Major Taylor. The wa- ter of these springs has been analyzed by Dr. James R. Chilton, of your city, to whom the Major sent samples for that purpose, and the following is the result :— The first, called Upper Salt Spring, furnished, from one pint ef water, forty-one grains saline matter, chloride of sodium predominating, chioride of sodium, chloride of magnesium, carbonate of lime, sulphate of lime, oxide of iron, chloride of calcium, carbonate of soda, carbonate of magnesia, sulphate of magnesia, silicia and vegetable matter. Second—White Sulphur Spring—One pint gives 56 Grains saline matter, viz: chloride of sodium, chloride of calcium, carbonate of li. chloride of magnesium, sulphate of lime, carbonate of magnesium, a trace of iron. Third—Salt Spring—Seventy-four grains por pint, viz: chloride of sodium, chloride of magnesium, beg ype lal ate of lime, chloride of calcium, of lime, carbonate of soda, carbonate of magnesia, of iron, vegetable matter, &o. ko. Fourth—Blue Sulphur—One pint yields ten grains, viz: chloride of sodium, chluride of magnesium, sulphate of magnesia. carbonate of magnesia, chloride of calsinm, sulphate of lime, carbonate of lime, iodide of sodium, vege ver have sent to ali the blishmen‘s in the msighborkeed, and that should this list not be adopted, there is then to be a general turnout. A meeting of the delegates takes plsce to-night. Rocupate Franses Mangst, Monday, Aug. 7.— There has been very little change to notice in the nel market during the last three weeks. The demand been limited, considering the time of the year, and prices low. There still continues great inactivity in the wool merket, and the manufacturers show no de fate buy, but for immediate use only. Prices are sta. jionary. The sccounts from Staffordshire are rather more fa: Yorable; iron may bequoted about ten shillings per ton etter. Large From Brrmupa.—By the arrival of the brig Lady of the Lake, Capt. Wingood, we have received our regular files of the “‘ Royal Gazette.” and “ Bermudian” to the 19th ult., from which we glean the following :— The Legislature was prorogued by the Governor on the 16th of August to the 20th of September. Lieut. Col. Arabin, of the Royal Artillery, and commandant of the garrison, died at St. George’s on the 17th. z There was a severe gale at Hamilton on the 18th, but no damage by it is recorded. ‘The Bermudian ofthe succeeding day says:— = _ Every alternate minute it blew in gusts of alarm- ing violence, and at each intervening lullapparently gathered force and fury, wherewith to territy and carry the besom of destruction over the face of our Isles. The sea, lashed into a rage, beat fearfully upon the shore, and by the force of the wind, and its own violence, incessantly flung showers of salt spray over the land. Rain also fell in abundance. The gale continued to rage with unmitigated force the whole of the afternoon, and from the same poiat, until about 5 o’clock, when the wind began to veer more southerly. At six it had reached the South, without any abatement in its violence, aud continued to blow from that quarter in territying and fitful gusts, until midnight, when it gradually veered point by point in a westerly course, and as gradually began to lose its strength, and subside. Atthe time we write, (two o’clock this morning,) the wind is blowing trom the south west rather smartly, but with comparatively little of the alarm- ing — which characterized it a few hours pre- vionsly. y ‘ Notwithstanding the great violence of the gale, which threatened devastating ravages among pro- perty both on shore and afloat, we have unfeigned gratification in stating, that so far as we have had opportunity ot cbservation and inquiry, no injury ei- ther to shipping or houses has taken place. New Granapa.—We have been favored with the perusal of a letter, dated Caly, June 6, 1843, and though not of the latest date, its contents may pos* sess some interest. We, therefore, make the fol- lowing extraet:— “The country is quiet for the moment, God Al- mighty knows how long it will last; still the conse- quences of this last revolution are jelt in many in- stances. About two months age, there was a movement near Palmira, of runaway slaves, and other vagrant people, so abundant, you know, in this country; they collected together in armed bo- bies, robbed some ‘ Haciendas’ near Palmira la Florida, &c., wounded and killed some mayor do mos, and did all kinds ofexcesses. They increased to 200 armed men, and were very near taking this city, none or very few troops being here, and they would have regularly plundered it had the govern- ment not seasonuble sent some troopsfrom Popayan to puta stop to the anarchy. But it is feared, and not without reason, that this will not be the last erup- tion of thiskind ; there is no police, whatever, and there are 80 many runaway and emancipated ne- groes and other vagabondg dispersed over the open country, that we must expect every momenta repe- tution of these scenes; and it is very difficult to catch them when they retire into the thick woods. Though this movement seems not to have had any political tendency, it has justly alarmed the go- vernment. The demoralization is daily increasing, and by the state of the country and the absolute want of means with the government to counteract licentious habits and dispositions, it is easy to foresee, that in ashort time, there will be nogecu- rity for lite and property in the opencountry. Fi- naily by the corruption and indolence of the inhabi- tants, and the spontaneous productiveness of this pare of New Granada, it must go to utter ruin ! ‘here is not the least hope of the opening ot the road to the port of Buenaventura, and the Supreme Government has an interest that it may not be FOREIGN WINES AND LIQUORS, No, 333 Ann street, New York. : HE, advertiser has for sale the following choice importa- ‘fons of the Bice quality, viz :— Old French Brandy in cask ana bostle vP Heltana Gig = eee ee 0} amber as the St. John’s Hall, being situated between Hoboken and Hackensack, embracing the whole of that great that passes those places to the interior of both those states, New York and were treated py avy others. New York. [Correspondence of the Herald.) New York, Aug. 31, 1843, sin the South—Corn, Peas, cis . a good—Cotton’ a fates sich James Gorvon Bannetr, Esq :-- Dear Sin— In my communication of the 26th inst., it did not occur to me to say anything to you about the crops ia the south—a subject of much interest to many of your readers, no doubt, just now, as there are many of our planters and merchants sojourning with you during the summer months. I beg permission to give you my opinion ot them now. Froia Mobile to Charleston, in South Carolina, embraces what I mean by the South, and being the only distance to which my remarks may apply. First, of the crops of corn, peas, fempkinn, c., they are excel- lent throughout, with scarcely any exception. In- deed, | never saw better. jut the e@otton crop throughout the whole distance, although the stalks are large and look very fiae, and to one unacquain' ed with the growth of the plant, might seem to be certain to yield an abundant quantity, yet to one with the experience of hie Bee in planting, like myself, gives but a melanel prospect for the table matter, ke. All these waters are strongly impregnated with sulphuretted hydrogen and carbonic acid gas. Dr. Chilton remarks, in conc'usion, that it must be evident to any one acquainted with the ingre- dients of these waters, that the springs possess medi- canal properties of a high order. What is so singular in regard to these springs is, that they should all have their origin and hold their course so nearly alike, meandering along within 200 yards of each other, io their ouilet at Lake Munroe. Reng k There alegend rife in Spain many years ago, that in this same flowery and fertile country there was a stream ot chrystal water, whose magic charms upon the human system could stay the wrinkles of age, and write wufading beauty on the glowing cheek of youth. In fact it wes uttered and believed by many that this hidden spring would se- cure all who should drink of it perpetual freshness, strength and vigor—and prolonging life’s little day to its ancient curation. It was under thie impres- sion that Ponce Dilion in 1746 undertook this ha- zardous but romautic excursion to this thea wild and forest land. i But his adventures were destined to be crowned with disappointment, and the manly brows of his country’s chivalric sons, and the blooming ch reke ot her lovely daughters, were still doomed to feel the blight of »ge, and y. their freshness and their beauty an unwilling offering at the footstool of old tyrant Time. : It is ssid, however, that these very springs aro no other than those in search of which Ponce Villon came, but be that as it may, we will not claim for them all that Spanish fiction did. i ‘ Under the Arndt occupation law, Florida has in- creased most rapidly. You are also aware there is a proposed mail route, which will connect Fort Mellen with Tampa by railroad. The New York mail to New Or will then pass mi inland water navigation from St. Mary’s to Fort Mellon— thus shortening the time of transportation several days, while it will benefit Florida very materially. Bur L have already spun out this letter to a length not intended when I commenced. In my next (should this meet your approbation,) I propose to give a more particular description of the country around the St Johns river and Lake Munroe—to take you with me in imagination, as I would be pleased to do im reality, along their verdant banks, in the clear moonlight, while the odor of the mag- nolia and the erange unite to perfume the balmy air, and as you wander through the rich groves of the one, or recline amidst the ehady bowers of the other, if you are not forced to exclaim, with the poet, “If there be an Elysiam on earth, it is this, it is this,” then I shall deem you far more insensible to the charms of nature, than [ could ever suppose one pos- sessing your taste, fancy and teeiing. 5 Major Taylor’s estate is situate at Enterprise, on and about the St. Johns ; he is a Virginian by birth, and settled here in 1841; he is about sixty years of age, and unites to all the qualities of a true Virginia gentleman, the practical knowledge of an American tarmer. —————— TEURMRAO GBNBRAL PRINTING ESTABLISHMENT, N.
