A’Canrew-corne Communrty.— A new Episcopal Chureh 1s about to_be built in Fair Haven, Conn., near the bridge which separates that village from the city of New Haven, being the twenty-fourth church edifice in the township of New Haven, which comprises a population of not far {rom sixteen thousand. From Taunron.—During ()« recent tornado in the vicinity of Taunton, an orcuard ef 100 apple trees in full bearing, was entirely destroyed, every tree having been prostrated to the earth, and the green fruit scattered hither and yon. The most markable fact is yet to be told ; one of the irees is missing, root and branch, and not a vestige ef it has been found to this day.—Boston Tyanscript. Counrsrrerrsr Arxestep.— The Norfolk Bea con mentions thata ript to a letter dated Eden- ton, August 12, received by a mercantile house in that boreugh, says:—‘‘1 have just heard thal counterfeiter has been taken up and lodged in jail, and is in irons. He came from Norfolk to Elizabeth city.” ‘This isthe same individual who passed a counterfeit $30 note of the Farmers’ Bank of V: ginia, on a mercantile house in Norfolk. After his arrest, his person and baggage were searched, and nearly six hundred dollars in good money, a loaded pistol and dirk knife, were found in his posseesion. He was committed to jail for further examination, not being able to give bail. He says his name is Wm. Brown, a horse drover; and resides in Louis- ville (Ky) Hiscompanion, R. Williamson, also ot Louisville, crossed the sound on Saturday last, having previeusly passed a note of a similar descrip- tion of the above, and it was supposed would pro- coat for Washington, (N. C.) whither he was pur- sued. Deatu or THE Hon. Bens. Pickman.—The Salem Register, of this morning, says: ‘We regret to announce the decease, yesterdav afternoon, (in con- sequence of the fatal accident of the upsetting of his carriage, a tew weeks since) of the Hon. Benjamin Pickman, one of our most esteemed and respected citizens. Col. Pickman was descended from along line of respectable ancestors of thisplace. He was educated at Cambridge, and married the daughter of that eminent and successful merchant, Elias Hasket Derby. He embarked in the mercantile brotession, and for a long period took a most active part in the political affairs of the country, having tor ipany years represented this town, county, and district, in both branches of the Legislature, and the Executive Council, and in the Congress of the United States. Col. P. has at all times, and under all circumstances, been distinguished by his courte- sy, gentlemanly deportment, and benevolence. He has spent a long life filled with good offices, and his memory will be ever cherished and respected by those who knew him.”—Boston Transcript. Srvck 1n THE Mup.—Last evening, about half past eight o’clock, a somewhat ludicrous scene took place in the First Municipality. A negro fellow. who it appeared had stolen something, was pursue by the watchman so closely, that in attempting to escape by jumping into the water, unjortunately, perhaps, he mistook the shining mud whieh the re- ceding waters had left, for the pure element itself, and made a desperate leap. But lo! instead of ““coming up,” as 18 usual afier a dive, he stuck in the mud, not a feet, but up to his arm pits. The watch, in the laudable zeal for the *‘ peace and dig- nity of the State,” pursued, hot foot and close, un- Ul there were no less than three of those worthies in ‘linked sweetness” with Cuffee, all floundering in the mud together—watchies springing their ratles and calling tor *‘more help,” and Cufl, with stento- rian lungs, bawling to be released from “ dat damn nasty hole.” The citizens collected in hundreds, und after fixing ropes to the unfortunates, succeed- ed, after long and strong pulls, in rescaing them all rom their interesting situations Cuff was borne off to the lock up; and the last we saw ot this bit of fun, were the watchmen ‘‘ cleaning themselves.” — N. O. Courier. Drowngv.—A small boy, about four years old, son of Mr. Peter Harrington, fell into the dock near Bishop’s wharf, Wednesday noon, and was drowned. His bedy was recovered a short time atter.—Providence Jour. Tuxee Surcipes.—The Pittsburg Chronicle states that a young man named Andrews, one of the wealthiest and most respectable merchants in that place, cut his throat on Friday of Jast week. He had just returned from Europe, and bad been mar- ried but a short time. A aan named J. Norris, committed suicide on Saturday, at Steubenville, by cutting his throat. A third individual, name T- nard Armstrong, hung himself on the same day, about three miles below Steubenville. Suockine Deatu.—A fatal accident occurred at the miil lately owned by G. A. Avery, at the Lower Fails in this city, on the 15th inst. A mill-wright named Robert Owen, anative of Wales, (where his mother resides) was at work alone on the water wheel, when it is supposed the water accumulated in the buckets to such a degree as to break away its fastenings,and the man was carried several limes round with it, crushing his body and one leg in a horrible manner. He came from Oswego to unis city a week ago yesterday, leaving there a friend by the name of David Saunders, and another at Remsen, Oneida county, named John Jones. His tools, trunk, &c., are in the hands of Mr. Avery, to wait the orders ot his friends.—Rochester Post American Manvuracturers In Canapa —The Toronto Harald says trat the imports trom the United States into the port of Toronto, from the 6: to the 25:h of July, were 930 packages, the du- ties on which will amount to between £750 and 42300. Some cotton fabrics of the United States have been imported, and this is probably a trade that will increase, unless the provincial Parliament augment the duty on the present rates. The coarser cotton goods of the United States are likely to rival the manufacture of Great Britain in this market. GREAT IMPROVEMEN FRICTION MATCHE: A, NEW ARTICLE OF MATCHES, without brimstone ‘or any other offensive quality, and actually waterproof, has lately been patented by letters patent of the United States in favor of the inventer, W. K. Ashard, and are now manufac- tured and offered to the public by the proprietors of said pac tent at No 161 Bleeker street, New York, where all who wish to purchase good matches are invited to call and prove them. And all persons whatever are hereby notified of the said patent and warned not to violate or infringe upon the same in any manner, lest they incur the penalties of the law in such cases.
