deup shame to itecli Jor such @ humiliating stace of things, openly claims credit, in the government organs, for being able to borrow, at 6 per cent, the money thrown ont of employ by the paralysation of the banks and merchants. The government which produced this great change is broken and disordered. With a deficient revenue and increasing debt—no matured system ef finance —no permanent commercial policy—no fixed hold upon the people, it is exposed te the action of a democratic Congress, which is coming down on them with the growing impetus of acolumn of cuirassiers upon a bre- ken square. There is every reasen to believe that affairs will be reversed, the tarift modified, the debt speedily di- minished, and the old course of the government restored before business will permanently revive. In our article of Tuesday we called attention to the appalling distress which the tariff has brought upon the agricultural interests. The prodigious crops of the far- mers are crowding the great avenues of trade, swelling the tolls of the public works, and pouring into the great depots, giving the manufacturers for whose benefit the tariff was laid, their flour and supplies lower than they can{ be raised for without profit to the produ cer. If jthe foreign manufacturers come here and compete with the domestic masters for agricultural preduce, prices will rise so that the latter will have to pay more for his flour; hence Congress drives out the foreigner, and the result is that the farmer cannot get money to pay his mortgage. This is a living truth that every man feels in his pocket. Notwithstanding the swelling volume of produce that rolls into the lap of the manufacturers, nothing is left inthe hands ofthe farmer. He therefore bnys no goods, and the iniquity redounds uponitsavthors. The duties levied by England on Ame- rican produce, of which she buys $60,000,000 per annum. average 16 per cent with the exception of tobacco. The duties levied by the United States upon English goods average 60 percent, and the imports $45,000,000. The article ef tebacco has been much harped upon as one from whish England derives a great revenue to the detriment of the United States. We will examine this point, and to do so will take from the Treasury tables the exports of tobacco from the United States since 1921, with the value and average price per hogshead, also the number of hogs- headasent annually both to France and England. Mark the coincidence, Thé export fell off at every point, and asa necessary consequence the price fell! The average for the seven years was 16 per cent less than the prece- ding seven years. This was the benefit to the tobacco planters of the high “ retaliative” tariff. In 1834 the com- promise tariff took effect; year after year as foreign goods came freely here to purchase tebacco, not only did the quantity of exports increase, but the price also increased asa matter of course under the demand, netwithstanding that cotton and other articles fell. Here is a pretty con- clusive proof that exclusion of foreign goods from our markets destroys our export trade more than any foreign impositions upon American produce. Let all agricultu ralists ponder upon this fact. The table also indicates that the quantity sent to each of these heavily taxed countries has steadily increased. This has not been brought about by reducing the prices, because the prices have advanced. The average price in the first ten years was 5} cents per Ib., and in the last ten years 640-100 cents per Ib. an advance of 16 percent. This advance of price proves mcontestibly that the supply has not kept pace with the demand. Oa what pretence is it then, that the politicians set up this hue and cry about foreign taxes, and appeal to them as a reason why our yet untaxed peo- ple should be robbed, in order to support bankers and stock jobbers ? The real object is to bolster the falling fortunes of desperate gamblers and speculators, and short- sighted politicians, prompted by a bad ambition, favor their views, and hope to ride into power on the top of the enormous load of debt that they are trying tocreate. The populace of Europe are writhing and struggling beneath a load of debt which they are about to throw from their shoulders. While the march of events is onwardin the old world, the paper lords here are childishly attempting to ge back to that order of things which is rapidly passing away. The recei| are yet small for the season, notwithstanding which considerable flour has gone into store on speeulu tion for higher ee. The late decline has eompelled sone of these holders to disgorge, and large quantities have within a day or two been produced in the market, for sale, at prices below the first cost. Speculators in this very important article seem to lose sightof the fact, that the shippers in the interior, on the least improvement in prices here, forward their stocks faster than though prices were more regular, and cause the fluctuations in this market that have characterised it since the opening of navigation. An advance in quota. tions for this market spreads through the West with the greatest rapidity, and every resource is brought into re- quisition to increase the shipments to the seaboard, in the hope of securing the high prices. ‘We quote the principal brands of flour in this market as follows :—Genesee, $5 25 a $5 37}; Ohio, fancy, $5 274; Michigan and Ohio, common brands, $5 12} @ $5 26; Georgetown, $5 60; Pennsylvania, $5'95; Troy, $5 31}. Wheat, we quote sales at $1 16 for fair to prime quatities. Rye,63 a 69cents. Corn, Northern, is worth 56 cents per weight; Southern, 56 cents, do. The most favorable re- ports ot the new crop continue to reach us. We make the Siawieg extracts from papers published in different sections of the country, by which will be seen the folly of speculators anticipating short crops, and a ¢onsequent risein prices. In most of the places quoted the harvest is through with, and the reports are no longer speculative rtions, but facts founded on occular demonstration, The Doylestown (Bucks Co., Pa.) Intelligencer of the 12th inst. says :— “ Intelligent farmers, from various sections of the coun- ty, are almost uniform’ in saying, that wheat will yield as well this season as usual—perhaps a little better—a geod, plump grain, ava not to much straw as last season. Rye is pretty good, though but small quantities are sown; Hay, not more than half a oman Oats, unless speedily re- rain, will not be worth cutting iu man; nota arge yield in any; Corn, though back- ward and not very promising, may yet produce a tol ble crop, if the season henceforth should prove tavorable. The drought has prevailed generally throughout the county, and has been a subject of general remark. Some small districts have had occasional showers ; but we are not aware that in any part of the county agriculture has escaped suffering to some extent for want of rain.” The Richmond Enquirer (Va ) s— We understand from one of our collectors, who traversed Carolina, and many of the contiguous counties, that the wheat crop is generally good—the straw less, the grain more, and the ality ofthe wheat much better than they were during the last season. ‘The Charlotteville (Ve.) Republican says— From ‘Vhursday of last week to Sunday, we had very het wea- ther, the thermometer ranging from 90 to 94; since it has been delightfully cool, the thermometer being down to 70. Cool-weather is just the thing for wheat, which will turn out much better than was anticipated, some of our farmers will have first rate wheat and first rate crops. Throughout Marylend, the wheat harvest bas turned out much bette: than was expected. ‘The quantity much greater, and the quality of the grain very fine The above few extracts agree with the hundreds we are receiving every day, which, with the remarks under the Chicago report, will be sufticient to convince the greatest croaker in the country that we shall have a larger crop of wheat and other grains this season than ever before. There cam be no mistake about it. The facts speak tor themselves, and whoever makes calculations to the con. trary, and Fovern their operations in breadstutls accord ingly, will have cause to regret it, and another time will take our disinterested advice. Rocnesten, July 11—A considerable portion of the wheat for the mills in this city is supplied from the sur- rounding country. During the month of June about 22,000 bushels were brought down the Genesee Valley Canal. From the Erie Canal there was landed during the same period 100,667 bush els—most of which was wes- tern wheat, purchased from vessels at Buffalo. Burrazo, July 11.—Flour has at last began to move, @ sale of 1,860 barrels of good Indiana having been taken at $4 50. It is thought this operation will dispel the apathy which has marked this article for several days, and beacriterion for farther sales. The quantity now stored and on sale here is large, but holders have kept back loug enough to discover that withholding their stock any farther is not likely to lead to profit. Ohio wheat continues to be taken at previous prices, say trom $1 to$l 03. Further sales of corn at 89 cents, and one lot ata half acent below that mark. The aggregate of wheat and flour shipped this season corresponds with the total exported eastward to the 10th September last year, and the wheat equals the quantity cleared to Ist September, 1841. Boston, July t1.—The market at the close became ex- tremely languid and win less firm—holders evinced more desire to realize, butthere were no buyers to any great extent. The transactions of the week consist in sales of 1221500 bbls Georgetown, $5 758$6; 1000 do Fredericksburg, $5 62e$5 75; 1500do Michigan, $5 37a $5 50; 500 do Genesee, $5 75 per bbl; 500 do Howard st., $5.75 per bbl. cash The transactions. in Corn are at a slight decline on mealing qualities, the arrivals being greater than the de mand. Sales within a few days of 10 to 12,000 bushel yellow flat at 68c, and 627000 do white do, 58a56c per bush. ‘rhe sales by auction arefor New Orleans about 15,000 bushels various qualities, 45a524c per bushel. Oats dull, northern 30a81c, southern, none geod in market. Cuicaco, June 23.—We have to record another unac. countuble rise in wheat and flour, wheat being worth 94 to 98 cents from wagons, Last night 98 cents were paid for small lot. We can perceive no adequate cau f the rise; it must be speculation, merely owing to t perabundance of money inthe Eastern cities. Perh some of the buyers are anticipating a short Srp, and if the season prove faverable, we predict for them burnt fin. gers between this and the first of October. There is now no reason to anticipate a decline till the effect of the new crop begins to be feit in the market; and we therefore ad- vise farmers to put all the help into the harvest fields they can command, and get their wheat to market as tast le. Let them make their calculations abi javorable season, the wheat brought in by to the 25th August will command 25 to 60 cents more per bushel than that brought a few weeks Jater. Itis all nonsense to anticipate a shore crop thus early; but if culators will do so, let farmers be wise enough to avail themselves of ther folly. Wool Trade. ‘The raising of this valuable, profitable, and important staple of the country is becoming more extensive and ex- tended every year. Those who have steadily directed their capital and soil to this branch of agricultu e have, amid ali the fluctuatio: { demand, and the great and sudien reductions in price, made it a safe and money. making business. The finest quality of full blooded Sax- ony wool, that a few years since commanded five and six shillings a pound, will only bring ‘rom 30 to 40 cents now, and our farmers say they can ufford to sell it at even that great falling otf im price, and make {ull es much per pound above expense oi cultivating 08 before. ‘he pre- jadice that so strongly existed among our agricultural gainst the raising of the finest quality of wool, is fast disappearing, and a prejudice as strongly in favor taking its place. The calculations necessary to convince all that still retain the slightest untuvorable prejudice, we leave tothe many ably conducted agricultural papers throughout the Union, but we assure ail the producers cf the raw material that the superier qualities pay the greatest profits and mect with the surest sales.— The supplies of wool from the extreme west, have be larger this season than ever before. The extensive prai- ries ofthat section of the country, are peculiarly adapted to the profitable caltivation of the most superior qualities of wool, on account of the abundance of excellent pas- turege. The expense of transporting a pound of wool from Misssouri to the eastern part of New England is trifling compared with whatit ison any other article of produce. A pound of wool, worth 37} cents in St. Louis, can be sent to Boston, and sold for cents, while a shel of wheat, costing the same, cannot be sold at the same port fer less than six shillings @ bushel. The ad ditional charges to increase the value, falls into the pockets of the carrier, while the producer is hardly re« ceiving cost for his joi nak This articlecan be cultivated by the farmers of the westfar more profitably than it can be by our eastern cultivators, in consequence of the equality of prices throughout the country, and the small expense of trans portation from one end of the Union te the other. There 18 no agricultural product where th fine to so small a space as the purest an Saxony wool. We see, by the St Louis New Era, that the steamboat Tatan, from the Missouri, brought down twelve bales of wool marked for “Lowell, Mass.” It was baled at Boonville, and is the product of Cooper county. At Rochester, the Sth inst.,the transactions, though large, have fallen consilerably below the purchases of thetwo previous weeks. The oggregate purchases of the present week amount to about 50,000 Ibs. Common and medium wool remain at our former quotations. ‘The higher graces have advanced, and we have raised our quotations full two cents per 1b. for the best descriptions.
