T. HOPE, Secremy, ‘homas Morrell THOMAS Wi THORNE, Prosidens, Rio de ata, [Correspondence ot the Herald.} Rio vx La Pata, May 10, 1843. Dear Sr: The French corvette “Coquette” arrived at Rio de Janeiro 29th April from Monte Video, bringing dates to the 18th idem—having made the voynge from Rio to Monte Video and back again in the short time of seventeen da The Coquette was despatched from Rio with am invitation to the French Admiral on the River Plata station to at- tend the marriage fétes of the Prince de Joinville and the Princess Frangiska, but the grave aspect o f affairs prevented the admiral leaving his post, and the corvette returned the same day she arrived. As formerly stated, the French had taken up arms, were organized and drilled, mustering 24 companies of 2,500 men, infantry, and 6 pieces artil- lery. The enthusiasm was great, notwithstanding the opposition of the French consul, a decided Ori- bista, and doing all he could to disarm them, though in vain. It was rumored a sortie was shortly to be made, to force Oribe to levy the siege. Rivera’s forces had taken possession of Coloma--Maldonado was also in theirhands. Probably Rivera and General Paz (the commandant in the city) were combining for the meditated attack. Oribe remains in the greatest inactivity, and is fortitying his camp. The English minister at Bue- nos Ayres, Mr. Mandeville, had approved of the proceedings of Commodore Purvis in regard to rown’s squadron, and in refusing to reconnoitre the blockade. : President Rosas’s fiftieth anniversary had been celebrated with solemnity, but with less pomp than usual. On the contrary, he had issued a donee forbidding the application to hia name, in official documents, of his adopted titles, Illustrious Restau- rador of the Laws, Hero of the Desert, and Defender of American Independence. He was henceforth to be called simply Captain-General de la Provincia. To make up for this shadowy sacrifice, the same sageta announces the arrival at Buenos Ayres of a deputation frem Faregiay to arrange sundry mat- ters of importance and mutual benefit with his ex- cellency the Governor. When it is known that this is the first diplomatic mission from Paraguay, which country, during the Dictator Francia, and even his present successors, has followed an almost Chinese exclusiveness in regard to foreign relations, com- bined with the late failure of Great Britain to estab- lish a diplomatic agent there,” it seems that Rosas has succeeded in his plan to establish a kind of su- premacy over this fine and hitherto little known country. The nevees on the river Parana into the very heart of South America, and combining the states of the Argentine Confederation, the Montevidean Republic, and Paraguay, has lately been carried on exclusively by the Buenos Ayreans, or by vessels provided with licenses from the Bh. Minister ot the Jnterior, purchased at high rates, which latter system was, however, put a stop to by Rosas, when made a subject of controversy and dispute in the Mentevidean papers. he Methodist Episcopal Church had held a meeting, the American consul, Mr. Amory Edward: chairman. Their newly appointed clergyman, Rev. Mr. Norris, who arrived from the United States in December, had opened service in his new church on the 8th January. | Don Pedro II. visited the Chamber in state on the 3d May, announcing formally to the Deputies he marriage of his sister Donna Francieka and the French Prince, which was celebrated on the Ist of the same month. The Prince Frangois Ferdinand de Joinville is 25—the Princess just turned 18. Yours, &c. *An English envoy, Mr. Gordon, arrived last summer at Buenos Ayres, on his way to Paraguay, but was refused by Rosas permusion to proceed up the Parana river, the usual route to Paraguay, under the plea that he conai- dered himslf, as chief of the Argentine Confederation, as the most suitable authority to conduct any ministerial or diplomatic interceurse with such a country as Pai . situated far up inthe country. Mr. Gorden had then to return te Montevideo and try to perform the journey over Jand, which wi 1s considered hi lly ractionhte, He suc. ander escort of Rivera’s troops ; but ‘al he was sent out of the country, under the plea of his having tried to introduce vaccina- tion, or some other equally Rivotous pretext. Sxpvetion anp DgatH.—The Pontiac (Mich.) Jacksonian gives an account of a wicked and de- lorable transaction, which resulted in the death.of iss Caroline A. Clark, whe is said to have been a handsome, well-intormed gitl of eighteen, re- siding ia the family of Alonzo Plumstead, of North- ville—her seducer, who is son-in-law to Mr. My- ers, the step-father of Caroline. Her death was attributed to the effect of injuries inflicted to procure abortion. The girl was taken away among stran- gers, where she died. Of course the particulars are ofa character that will not permit their publication. It is said, however to have been a very aggravated case. The Jacksonian says: ‘The scene presented on the arrival of the afflicted mother and sister from Detroit, is said to have been heart-rending to the last degree. When the ead intelligence was communicated to that too fond and unsuspecting Lect that her daughter lay in the cold arms of death at Farmington, in this county, it required the utmost powers of persuasion on the part of the messenger, who was despatched for that purpose, to convince her of the fact. She could not and would not believe it. She was sure that her child was then safe with her friends in Toledo, and she remained psrtially incredulous until she arrived ind saw her with her own eyes! The wife of the vile seducer was also present, and, with all the elo- quence and earnestness of woman’s confidence and tried off etions, protested her husband’s innocence and the ” wossbility of his having had anything to do in the perpetration of so foul a crime, until her mouth was closed by his confession to her face that he wus indeed the guilty wretch! : Plumsted is still at large, and it iagaid there is se- rious doubt if there be any law in Michigan by which he can be punished. The law punishing such offences was repealed by the locofoco legisla- ture last winter, and tho seducer and destroyer will of course escape. Senator Greenly, who has been nominated by the Adrian Watch Tower as the loco- toco candidate for Lieutenant Governor, was the author of that repeal. He introduced the bill into the Senate, and it was hurried through that body without debate or amendment. Here is its legiti- mate fruit. Horriste Arremrt at Morper.—A man named George Brown, residing in Saltlick township, Fay- ette county, Pennsylvania, recently attempted to take his wife’s life by administering arsenic to her. He first put it in a ginger cake, which he gave her toeat. She, however, suspected all was not right, and after chewing the cake a while, deposited the contents of her mouth into her hand, and descried the arsenic. Failing in this, he took advantage ot her sleep at night, and poured arsenic mixed with water into her ear, which had the effect to cause in- tense pain. The monster had been arrested, but an Tikerated by giving security to the amount of 00. Dr. Hacan.—A later account from Vicksburg, contradicts the report that Mr. Adams, who killed Dr. Hagan of the Sentinel, commenced by aseault- ing him from behind. It is stated that he made several demands of him, before he struck. But it does not appear that Hagan was armed. TCWRAUE ID GBNERAL PRINTING ESTABLISHMENT, N. W. CORNER OF FULTON AND NASSAU STS.
