Emtarants.—The St. Agustine News says——“* A party of sight emigrants trom Newark, New Jer- sey, arrive purpose settling.” Traps or Sr. Louis --The St Louis Democrat of the 3rd instant thus recipitulates the steamboat trade of the previous week: | Fifty steamooats have arrived and about the same number departed, during the week, laden with produce or merchandise. Of the tollowing articles there have been exported, 800 hogshead and 31 tons (in bulk) of bacon; 1000 sacks of com; 3000 barrels of flour; 2000 bales of hemp ; 27,000 pigs of lead ; 900 barrels and kegs of lard ; 1300 bar- rels of pork ; 900 hogshead of tobacco; 2000 bar- rels and sacks of wheat. And there have been imported, 400 hogsheads of bacon ; 1600 sacks of corn ; 2500 barrels of flour; 1300 bales of hemp ; 20,000 pigs of lead ; 700 barrels and kegs of lard . 600 barrels of pork ; 1100 hogs- heads of tobacco; 5200 barrels and sacks wheet. Navvoo.—A_ writer in the St. Louis Gazette, who lately visited Nauvoo, says he was informed by the Mormon Prophet, Joseph Smith, that Nau- voo contains 16,000 souls. The temple has advap- ced about 16 or 20 feet above ground, and will take several years to finish it. It is estimated to cost from $300,000 to 400,000. The Nauvoo House, a splendid building intendid for a hotel, is in progress of erection, 2 Seventy Mormons with their teamsand traps pas ed through our city this moming. Marniace Question Serrirp.—We understand. the Synod of the Reformed Dutch Church, by a vote of 18 to 22, decided to permit the marriage with a deceased wife’s sister. asFreignt TRANSPORTATION ON THE Boston anp Worcesror Raw Roap.—The quantity of mer- chandise which was transported on the Boston and Worcester Rail Road during the six months ending on the 31st of May last, was 32,723 tons 6ewt. of which 19,231 tons and 10 ewt. consisted of mer- chandise transported upwards from Boston, and 13,- 491 tons and 16 ewt. of merchandise brought to Boston. Ot this amount 9,841 tons consisted of merchandise transported on the Boston and Worces- ter Railroad alone; of which 7,971 tons 19 ewt. of merchandise conveyed upwards from Boston; 20,143 tons 19 cwt. were conveyed to or from the Western Rail Road, and 2,738 tons 7 ewt. to or from the Norwich and Worcester Rail Road The amount of merchandise downward from the Western Rail Road to Boston, the greater part of which was brought from Albany, w&s 10,792 tons 17 cwt. in which were included 16,911 barrels of flour. Of the quantity transported to or from the Norwich Rail Road, about one halt consisted ef merchan- dise conveyed directly to er from New York. In the downward transportation from the Western soad there was an increase, compared§with the cor- respouding ed of last year, of about 6000 tons The upward transportation to that road was of about the same amount as in the former period, viz. 9,351 tons 2 cwt. The whole transportation in the six months ending May 31, 1842, was 26 612 tons 15 ew; increase in the six months of the present year, 6,110 tons Il cwt. In the number of passen- gers on the road in the last six months, there was a slight diminution compared with those of the same period of the preceding year.—Boston Adv. Tue Bownorn Esratre.—lo the Justice’s Court, was entered the action of the President, &c., of Bowdoin College vs. Robert C. Winthrop and Amos Cotting, sor a forcible entry en the premises atthe corner of Beacon and Bowdoin streets, in April last, row commonly known as the “ disputed territory.” Counsel retained:—For college—Jere- miah Mason, Simon Greenleaf, C. Tue Losr Scooner.—Masters of vessels from the upper lakes, continue to speak of the spar of a verse] seen standing above water near the Betseys. Some supposed her to be the Brewster, which left Chica- go in May for this port, and others deemed it to be the Chickaloni, both of which veszels have been seen duringfthe past four days eastward of the Straits, bounddown. As soon as the upper lake fleet, now coming down, get in, the name of the lost vesse] will doubtless be made known.—Buffalo Com. Wreckep.—On the 6th instant, a small veesel of about forty tons, cleared from Chicago for Milwau- kie, with a load of flour, smee which she has not been heard from. Pieces of a wreck, however, have been picked up on the beach, and the conclu. sion is that she has been lost with all on board—the hands, and Henry Conkling, a cierk of the Messrs. Carter, of Chicago.—Cleveland Herald. Wanrvike.—Her Majesty’s armed steamer Minos, Capt. Foal, came into port yesterday on her way to some Canadian Naval Depot on Lake Huron, the name of which we can neither spell, write or pro- nounce. She isthe blackest, dirtiest looking crait we ever boarded, and her very hideousness 1s cal- cula edto frighten an enemy.—Detroit Lai/y Ad- vertiser. A Sreme.—The Crawfordsville (Ia.) Review of the 3d, says there has been a general turnout of ail the hands on the line of the Wabash and Erie Canu} from ,Covington to Lafayette. It is said that be- tween three and four handred of the laborers col- jected infront of the store-room of Mevsrs. Moore- head, Hall & Co., at Granville, and demanded the payment or al! arrearages, declaring at the same time that unless their wages were increased they would quit the line. Deatu By Ligurnine.—The Lycoming, Pa. Ge- zette announces the melancholy death of Mr. and Mrs. Stewart, at their resideuce in Lycoming town- ship, on Sunday evening, the 4th inst. They were engaged, on bended knees, ofiering up their devo- tons to the Supreme Being, when they were struck by lightning, and instantly killed. Four small chil dreu have, thus suddenly, been deprived of an a’- fectionate father and mother, and left to the mercy and protection of an all-wise Providence. Hew striking the admonition—“ Be ye also ready, for ye know not when the Son of man cometh.” During the storm on Saturday morning last, while a Mr. Evinger, of Floyd county, Indiana, and another young man were ina stable, a horse near them was killed by lightning, and Mr £’s companion severe- ly shocked. Mr. E. carried hm into the house, re he found that his wife had beenkilled. There damage done either to the house or the sta- ble, and the two buildings were some forty or fifty yards distant from each other. ‘This is most singu- lar, since both deaths must have been caused by the was explosion.—Low.
