COLLINS & CO, aidec 96 Souh street, he | further !mportant Proceeding: | Market Hou ofour high- ly intelligent, deeply instructed Demo~ eratic Board of Aldermen and Assistants, In Caucus Assembled. For the past week, it has been considered expedient not to hold more than a single meeting at any one place, in consequence of the rush of office seekers, which would prevent that attention to the public welfare, and the distribution of the spoils, which is called for by the “ usages of the party,” and the oath of office, which is taken once in every five minutes in the day. Accordiagly, the board has shifted from the old Watch House in Ludlow street to a tem- perance hotel in Chatham street, next to Boss Rich- ard’s big boot shop, then to Killinger’, in the Five Points, where they got liquor at 3 cents a glass, and on Friday last they made out to get down to the City Hall, where some two or three hundred of the “young democracie” were in waiting to receive them. A few minutes before dark, the worthy and favor- ite Al ‘erman of the 10:h ward was seen rounding the north-west corner of the Hall, pulling away tor the caucus room, somewhat disguised in a new hat and boots from oss Kichard’s store, where the last meeting but one had been held. The disguise didn’t answer the purpose, and as ‘* Oid Jronsides,” as the worthy Alderman is now called, placed his left and best toot upon the last step,"*Alderman! Alderman!” “T say, Purdy!” “ Here, here, Purdy!” -* Purdy! Purdy!” came buzzing around his head from all quarters, and every nook and corner. His Honor, the Mayor, little kaowing what was going on, ven tured out of a private roum, with a “ long nine” in his mouth, which he had a moment before picked up oft of Clerk Vuleatine’s desk, and betore a reireat could be made, he was assailed wisha volley of “I vo- ted fer you, your Honor!” “Land bill Green got you nominate!’ * Here, your Honor, take my soger, our’n is out !” “Order, he’s going to make a speech!" ‘Away wid your order, old hunker, out with him!” “ Purdy!” “Bob Morris!” and a thousand other equally impressive and etlective ejaculations were tumbled out, one after the other, like the host of colonizers in the 8th ward on the morning of the last election. _ In the course of the me/ée which here ensued, Morris and Purdy made their escape, the latter minus a tail from his benjamin and the loss of a bandana—value, two and two pence. Nearly all of the Board by this tume had succeed- ed in reaching the chamber, and while Old Ironsides was busied in making a spencer of his one-tailed benjamin, Alderman W. came rushing into the room, pale and breathless. He had preven himself, on mere than one occasion,as gentlemen well knew a success: ful water man, (applause,) but to stem this rush atter oflice, was hke trying to,.wim up the Niagara with both hands ued. (Lhunders of applause. Purdy drop’d his jack-knifte and squeezed his eyes together closer than usual at thisburst of eloquence.) ** {tis our duty,” continued the worthy Alderman, “in the distribution of this world’s goods, to look after our own household—the o!d white horge of Schohane, and our intellectual Senator Warian, saw the neces sity of following strietly this rule in all of their ap- pointments. (Much indignation.) We are admon- ished to this considerauon also by the scriptures, which [’ve gotin my hat:—They are called heathens who disobey or overlook it. (Much coughing— some sueezing—and a little applause.) I have now a list in my hand—” “Stop, boss,” interrupted the Alderman of the 10th, ‘you have nothing to charge yourself with in this particular. You have taken devilish good care of your family, thus far. Suppose you now leave a little of this matter to others? !’ve a brother-in-law, and what’s more, I want him appointed.” (Great sensation.) Hatrievp then mounted the chair; the minutes of the lust meeting were read by Boaas, from the Herald, and on motion of Alderman Lye, the name Vache’s dog (Thunder,) was inserted. Asgistant Alderman PatrERson nominated for the office of keeper of Bellevue, Alderman Purdy’s brotner in- law, Mr. Moss. (Dead silence.) ‘ Question,” says Hatfield. Carried unanimously, Note.—The re- lationship in tnis case is no objection. Moss is a good Van Buren man, and Will reflect credit to the office. 4 Lump Lighters.—Nearly all of the old lamp-light- ers were voted in by acclamation; as were also about two-thirds of the watchmen. Note.—There are now over 500 applicants for office in these de- partments. Alderman Emmons stated that supper was on the table. He thought that Aldermen had better fill their empty stomachs, and in all propality things would go on better for the remainder of the even ing. Agreed to. Note.—There are certain gen- tlemen notoriously ia the habit of stuffing in their pockets what they can’t eai, and as was the case on Friday evening last, their hats also. This habit must be abolished. On the return of the Caucus, a letter was read from the Surr gate of Columbia county, in answer to one addressed to this functionary by the Caucus. He regretted the circumstance, but believed all those wanting office in the county had been provi- ded for. He enumerated some twenty judges ap- pointed in various parts of the State, together with five or_ten in this city, and after returning thanks tothe Board for its discernment and disinterest- edness, recommended ‘o its favorable attention the five gentlemen from that place who are now appli- cants for District Attorney, Corporation Attorney, Public Administrator, &c. An answer to the rego- lution, passed at the last meeting, to the committee ot finance at Tammany Hall, was read, and the names of all applicants who had not contributed, was ordered to be marked. Proeress or Crvitization 1x Boston.—It really appears| that Boston, the model city of morality, the pink city of civilization, is rapidly becoming the city of modern chivalry, in the shape of street fights andbrokenheads, We have lately recorded three or four fights and riots in that place, and have now to add another to the list. {From the Boston Mail, May 1.) A most disgraceful row occurred last (Sunday) night in the west part of thecity. A gang of ten or filteen per sons, some of tuem partially intoxicated, eutered Mr. Moclure’s victualling cellar under the West Boston ind, being very turbulent, were finally ordered to leave the premi eing too stromg for the keepers of the cellar, they soon commenced the work of demolition, and upset a long table, breaking the crockery upon it, and performing other feats which per sons bent on mischief may be supposed to engage in. Mr. McClure sent tor a constable, an’ one soon arrived, but finding the rowdies too strong for him, went for assis tance. During bsence they made their escape, went threugh the street creating agood deal of neise and dis- turbance. They soon met a party of colored people, whom they first insuited and then attacked. The blacks took to their heels, and were pursued up the hill te West Jedar street, where some two or three of them made o stand, and attempted to defend themselves. In the fray, one of them, named Richard Gardner, was bra | stabbed in the abdomen. In the mean time some ot the police and aftera hard brush with the rioters, two of 's were arrested. They are undergoing exami- nation this morning at the police. Warrants are out against othe but we omit their names until we learn the resuit of the examination. Vinatnia Evections.—We have not yet received sufficient returns to indicate the resnh in many of the Congressional districts. Mr. Dromgoole (Rep.) is certainly elected. Mr. Jones (Rep.) is certainly elected over Mr. Botts. The Clay papers say Mr Goggin is elected over Governor Gilmer by a small majority. Mr. Chilton (Fed.) is elected. Mr. Hopkins (Rep) iselected. Mr. Stee: red do The Clay papers, also say Mr Newton (Fed.) is elected ove Mr. ‘unter; and that Mr. Toler (Fed ) is elect edinthg fourth district. Wise is surely elected. Price wwe Cents, Twearnicats, Movements anp Dornes.—The Broughams nave terminated their engagement at the Chatham, and have gone to Boston, where they will receive a cordial welcome. Mr. Brougham is the best Irish actor of the day, and Mrs, Brougham possesses great versatility of talent, and isa very charming woman. The pretty Miss Reynolds has gone to Albany, to play six nights at the Museum. She is engaged at Niblo’s for the coming season, where she will be one of the chief attractions. {ge The ice upon Lake St. Peter is still firm. John Sefton, who is at present in New Orleans, will have the management of Niblo’s this seacon, Burton is engaged, and will superintend the produc. tion of his own vaudevilles. The Ravels will not appear at Niblo’s this sea- son. Miss Clarendon has taken the theatre at Mobile. SRS ae Mr Knaebel, the well known compoeer, after an absence of many mouths at the South, intends to return to Boston, his former place of residence, in the early part of the present month. We under- stand that Mr. K. has just completed his grand mu- sical composition, called “ The Battle of Bunker Hill,” and intends to bring it before the public in the course of the next month At the Italian Opera, in New Orleans, I Puritani has been succeeded by Donizetti's La Gemna di Virgy. So tar, the company seem to have been very successful, and have drawn full houses. Col. R. M, Johnson artived in New Orleans on the 20th, and was received by a committee compos- ed ot a number of gentlemen of both political par- ties. Colonel Barton made him an address in be- halt of the citizens, to which Col. Johason respond- ed. Lake Champlain is again ©; en, and those two magnificent steamers, the Bir! agton and Whitehall, under Captains Sherman and Lyon, two of the most accomplished gentlemen and commanders in the country, have resumed their trips. Navigation on Lake Ontario has also again commenced. All the boats have commenced their regular trips Dr. J. G. Palfrey, of Boston, late editor of the North American Review, was at New Orleans on the 21st. The Hon. Walter Forward, late Secretary of the Treasury, arrived at his residence in Pittsburg, on Friday last, after an absence of ebouta year. Go*ernor Porter has appointed Richard 8. Elliott, late editor of the el aiee Intelligencer, one of his aids, with a rank of Lieutenant Cclonel. They talk of giving Daniel Webster a public din- ner in Baltimore. Mr_Cusutnc —We learn from the Boston papers, that Mr. Cushing has returned to that city*from Washington, and that he will offer himself to the electors asa candidate for Congress, independent of any party organization. THe Miutsr Tasernacte —This building, lo- cated in Howard street, Boston, is to be dedicated to Almighty God on Thursday morning next, the fourth of May. The sermon en this interesting oc- casion will be preached by the Rev Mr Hawley, formerly an orthodox congregational minister. A series of meetings, we understand, are afterwards tobe held every morning, afternoon and evening. The room is a very large and c»pacious one ; it is estimated that about five thousand pereons can be seated in it—this, however, we deem question- able. Father Miller will not be present at the dedi- satay his attendance being prevented by a severe Uiness. Parson Mitter.—The Signs of the Times says Mr. Miller is quire low aud feeble, and fearsare en- tertained that he may not recover. It would be singular if the end of the world should in truth come i him about these days, when he is expecting it for all. Tus Tremont.— Mr. Forrest has been re-engaged for five nights longer at this theatre; he draws well, and when sustained by such a person as Jose- phine Clifton, cannot fail of securing overflowing audiences. PrespyTerian AssemBLies.—The General Assem- bly of the Presbyterian Church 1n the United States of America—old school—will assemble in the Central Church, Philad., at 1lo’clock in the morn- tng of Thursday the 18th May. Dr. Edgar, of Nashville, Moderator of the last_ Assembly, will preach the opening discourse. The new school Assembly will assemble in the Ist Church on the same day, and the sermon will be preached by Dr. Wisner. e The Pennsylvania Episcopal Convention will meet in St. Andrew’s, Philadelphia, on Tuesday, the 16th May. Mx. Russgut’s Concert.—The Melodeon was filled to Srerieging Saturday evening. with ladies and gentlemen, to listen to the last of Russell’s se- ries of musicalentertainments. As on the occasion of his first concert, the principal seats were occupied soon after the opening hour, and betore the vocalist began, the floor of the hall and the encircling boxes were filled with a sea of faces, all radiant with an- ticipated pleasure and blissful exp-ctation. The Graves absquatulation has been dramatized at Jackson, and performed in the theatre to a crowd- ed house. It is said to be cleverly done. Col. R. M. Johnson, after sojourning in New Or- leans some days, left on the afternoon of the 22d, for Vicksburg. The Hon. James G. Clinton, member elect to the next Congress, from New York, and Elon. 8. S. Bowne, have arrived in Washington, and taken lodgings at Beer’s Temperance Hotel. A Juventce Divine.—It is stated in the Baltimore papers, “that the Rev. T.
