Sykes and Baker. "Dragoons—Companies K and H Jeft Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on the Sh inst., for Fort Jesup. A Beaurient Opsect.—The white magnol which is now in flower in Washi the corner of Sixth and Walnut sts., is a most beau- titulobject. The Square is putting fon its most at- tractive features, at least as far as we can judge by a peep through the iron railings, for the public at large are as yet excluded from it. If the Pnngen weather should continue but a few days, it will be rayed in all the beauty of young spring, and draw crowds of vonng and old to enjoy this pleasant path way —Phil. Gaz. Severe Har Srorm in St. Brors —We learn from St. Brides that a mest severe hail storm fell at that place on Sunday last, which played sad havoc with the plants and windows, Breaking them in every direction in which it fell| The hail stones were near three inches in length and over two in width, and pevetrated the earth several inches — Norfolk Herald. Liek tv THe West. —A correspondent ot the Buf- falo Commercial writes from Maumee eity, (western Om«,) under date 1th instant, that the’ Maumee 4as broken up with # great freshet. which carried off Se tences trom the flits and left huge blocks of ice in their stead, and that several blocks of stone be- longing ‘0 one of the piers atthe mouth of the Mau me~ Canal, “mistaking themselves for cakes of ice,” had floated off in the flood toward Lake Erie. Thr bridge over the Maumee was swept off Some of the piles of the long wharf at Manhattan (mouth of the Maumet) were sawed off by the ice, which did not apear to comprehend the difference be- tween white oak timber and rye straws. The Canal was also open, but not yet quite in order ‘The writer concludes:-—“The weather 1 very fine; the roads are drying very fast, the grass begins to look green, the frogs have found their voices, the Toaple trees are all tapped, and the prospect for sugar is great; and immense are the anticipations of fun by the boys and girls in their visits to the sugar-bush to get their fill of “lasses, and have a general “sugar ing-off.” The fishermen are furbishing up their tackle, and soaking their boats in the gutters, pre- liminary to a haul, and the way we are ail licking our lips fora taste of that clagsic dainty, “suckers and milk,” would do credit to an old resident upon the bauks of the Tonawanda or Buffalo. All the old guns are in requisition for the enterprise of shooting pickerel in the grassy creeks on e:ther sied of our river; and I have just borrowed a pitchfork, to be used in default of a better implement, to try my luck at spearing mu let from the break water, in consideration. whereof, I bid you a good day. Tornavo —A destructive toraado passed within three miles of Milton, N. C.,on the 18tn instant. Barns, tobacco-houses, fences and , trees were pros- trated. Ice Beras.—We learn from Captain Joyce, from Arichat, N.S. via Halifax, that on his passage from Arichat to that port, when to the westward of Cape Canso, he encoustered immense quantities of ice, and was tor three days cowpletely hemmed in, sur- rounded by large berge ; but the wind shifting to the westward, he was enabled to make a passage through Capt. Joyce also informs us that there were two hermaphrodite brigs, waich he supposed were bound to the eastward, fast iu the ice; they had their sales furled, and he supposed them to be sealers The ice tor many years was never seen so far to the Westward as it has been this season ; owing, it is supposed, to the heavy easterly gales which have prevailed during the winter, Tne Ow1o Cana —The water has been let into the canal from this city south to Portsmouth, and boats commenced leaving here on yesterday. We may now look hourly for boats from the south. The who'e line of canal from Cleveland to Portsmouth will be opes from the Ist to the 5th of May. With the exception, perhaps, of the repairs of one lock, all wul oe ready oy the 1st—that may not be comple- ted for a day or so alter that time. By the 5ih, at ‘the tartnest, the whole line will be clear.—Colum- bus Statesman, April 25. Banxkurrcy in New Jersey.—-The Bankrupt Court held at Paterson, last week, was the last at which applications in bankruptcy could be made.— The whole number of applications made under the act is 820, and there have been upwards of 500 dis- charged.— Trenton Gazetie. Cuirring Goto Com.—The New Orleans Pi vane States that this practice prevails largely in Havana, and that a large quantity of gold in circu- lation ia that city, had been prepared in the Havana market tor the use of the good people of New Or- leans. Severe —/n St. Alban’s (Vt.) a Eugene Clifford has veen found guilty of drowning his wite in Fair- ficid Pond, in October last, and sentenced to one year’s solitary confinement in the State prison, and then to be hung. Aw Unoraterut Strrxe.—In consequence of the vast number of laboring men out of employ in King- ston, the Corporation last Monday, voted to ex, nd 4 certain sum of money in relief of their necessities, end consequently the City Surveyor took on several huodred men at two shillings a day. Yesterday nearly the whole of these men struck Tor higher wa- ges, and not content with quitting taeir own work, strove by violence to influeuce the few who remain. ed steady. The consequences is that the ringlea- ders were apprehended and sent to jail, and the fa- mailies ot the remainder were lett io starve. The Wages it is true, were too low, but the men sheuld have considered under what circumstances they were set to work —Kingston (Canada,) Whig, April 21. Wetanp Canau Break.—The Butfalo Advertiser of the 25th, has a postscript as follows—"* We have a report of « formidable break in the Welland Canal, but of what exteat is unknown.” The same paper says—“* The ice in the lake is wuch broken up, und 15 pOW subject to the action of the wind, which drives it alternately up und down the lake Vast bodies of it are rapidly passing down the Niagara, aod our forwarders anxiously looking for a western steamer.” tree, ton square, near Conviction Axo Snrence.—Captain Owens, tried at Auoapolis, Md., torthe murder of his son, has been convicted of murder in the second degree, and sentenced to seven years Imprisonment.
