Ave 1STOL’8 SARSAPARILLA vs. SANDS’ SAR- |APARILLA.—The public have been referred, for some ‘onths past to one George Dulay, 114 Willet, who is said be cured by Sends? Sarsaparilia, as published in our ity and county papers. The cese, as pourtrayed in the pers, would, if true, be one of the tallest kind, but there certainly some mystery as to thefact. George Dulay, te of 114 Willett street, has been dead three or feur d it is said by some that the man never wes ured, unless it be that he died cured, If the latter beth et, Sands’ article beats ail others, and far exceeds Bri pi’s hitherto unrivalled extract, for Bristol’s only cures ersons while living, and none of his patients die cured, lut are compelled to remain on earth for atime and suffer e perplexities of life that man is born to. We would ike to know weather it is the peculiar efficacy of Sands’ onderful newly-found out preparation, that makes so pany die cured, or whether it is the eflect of some fatalit tending those who take the article. Can any one tel }# how it is, and why adead man is thus referred to as Ine enjoying good health, &o. Now, with ogee to Bris- Pl’s Sarsaparilla, those who have been cured by it, can found with ease, for they yet live and move amidst the ares of life. We prefer BrlstoPs, asit is no humbug or jatch-penny. Those who wish the genuine Sarsaparilla ust see that the written signature of C. C. Bristol is vritten across the cork of the bottle. The Cincinnati Enquirer, edited by C. H. Brough, con. ins nearly acolumn commenting upon our stricture in plation to the present mission of John Brough, ksq., Aud- or of the State of Ohio, to this city, to issue proposals for loan of $1,500,000, 7 per cent stock. Mr. C. H. Brough, he editor, is no doubt fully convinced of the propriety of he mission of Mr. J. Brough, the Auditor, and pretends ot to understand the position of a press in the interest of he public. He remarks as follow: “ Thousands of our bonds are in the han jew York ; and these men as those bonds are discredited or appreciated. vith no oftve, then, to prompt so virulent a course—so far as the hfiuences in the city of New York are concerned ; but ith every motive to a different course growing ont of a ard for the interes’s of Ohio bond holders there, is it not range that, day after day, such systematic attempts hould be made to break down the credit and character of se the our State 7” Now, that Mr. Brough, the editor, may have an answer to our motive, such as he can understand, we will ords of Mr. Brough, the Auditor:: “ Bound as the State is, by the voluntary pledge of her ith, i i last, not to make further sales ‘foreign stocks, her authorities will be compelled to look home resources * * * The heavy sacrifices that ‘eady been made, on the part of the State of Ohio, maintain her faith with the holders of the stock, have t given to, and maintained for her, that character and ‘edit to which she is entitled. This, however, does not beaken in anywise, the obligation ; and should not ip- ace to any act by which that faith and credit may be pmpromised. There is much due to the present holders our stocks, ond by no act should their value be wantor impaired.” After this announcement of Mr. Brough, the Auditor, ir. Brough, the editor, will he at no loss to understand hy we regard the issue of a 7 per cent stock in this mar- in violation of jState faith, as an act injurious to the ckholders, destructive of their property, disgraceful to hio,and at this juncture when American credit remains nder a cloud, it is a matter in which the whole Union is terested, and one which, as a species of repudiation, ould be promptly frowned down and perseveringly ndemned by every honest press, and true friend of Ame- an credit. Ohio in March, 1840 —_ thorized a domestic an to pay its citizens for work done. The summer elap- d and the utmost efforts of the State officers failed to ne” ptiate that loan with the citizens of Ohio. What wasthe oper course to have pursued in the first instance ? Com- jon sense gives the answer. Jn March, 1842, the credit of 1 the States was nearly*gone. New York 6 per cents jereat 80. Ohio 6percent sold atthe New York Mer- hants’ Exchange, at public auction, at 60 centson the Har, Thesestocks had been pledged for a temporary an, and were forfeited by the State, In this state of Hairs, Ohio owed its laborers $800,000 for work. Why d it not levy a tax to pay those men? They are not paid t; but at the expiration of the time for which the pre. nt 7 per ceat is offering, they will reccive that paper at r for their stock debts, and sell it for what they can get fter the failure to borrow money in Ohie, on a 6 per pnt stock lost year, the iseus of a foreign stock for the me purpose was tantamount to a declaration on the part the Ohio Legislature, that if their own citizens get id at all, tor work dene, the people of New York mus, y iton the credit of a State whose plighted faith was bro mn. Had the debt been paid by taxation, Ohio would have ken the front rank. New York, in February, 1842, levied tax of $600,000, to provide for possible contingencis per cents are now at 106, and these of Ohio at73. We ve no doubt that the people of Ohio would have paid e tax cheerfully, but their truckling, time.serving poli- ians and officers, were afraid to askthem. Thetax ied now, after their property is wasted, and their credit jured, promptly imposed im the first instance, would ve saved their money and their honor. No threats, no anders, no base inwendoes of a vile and venal press, will ter we from exposing such conduct as this, We yesterday gave a table of the trade on the New ‘ork canals for two years, showing a great felling off in © internal trade, for the year, in value, although the de- ine in quantities was not so material, Deducting the erchandize from the resujs, the quantities reduced to ns present the following result, as compared with the ue ‘otal 1841, 1942, ecrease, 245,122 12,092,154 ‘ The tonnage of 1942, at the prices of 1841, should have jelded $35,200,035, showing a loss of near $5,300,000 to ¢ farmurs. In passing through the streets of our city devoted to this branch of business, we notice con- siderable activity among the jobbers. Customers from the country beginto make their appearance, but as yet pur. chases have teen trifling. Western merchants have not arrived yet, and, as they are the heaviest buyers, we anx- iously look’ for them. Our jobbers intend doing a small but safe business. The system of credits has been revised, and the long pe- riods given to distant customers completely abolished. ‘The average time is now six months, beyond which none venture togrant. In times past, the competition among our jobbers was, who should do the most business—who should sell the greatest amount; but among the chan- ges the times heve brought about, this has been the most thorough. ‘The country merchant must now have capital te oblain credit of Caceh peers a letter of introduction will not pass for aletter of credit under the present administration of commercial aftairs in this city; speculators cannot obtain the credit that actual, legitimate business men, con com, mand. Our imposters and jobbers formerly found a good mi ket at the east, but the facilities the Bostonians now enjoy induces many to import their goods direct, consequently eastern country merchants now go to Boston instead of coming to this market. ‘The stock of foreign dry goods in first hands is small, and the jobbers have not laid in supplies for a large trade; rices ate extremely low. particular for domestic manu- factures. Our French importers are doing avery small business. The falling oft in imports is immense, being less than a quarter of what they were up to this time last year. Packets arriving at this season in previous yea came full, whereas now their freight list will hardly pay their expenses. ‘The stocks in the interior have dwindled down te almost nothing, and still the country merchant buys very spar- ingly, and nothing but the most staple kind of goous. ‘he farmer buys nothing but actual mecessaries, some- thing to keep soul and body together, and finds great diffi- culty to pay even for those; consequently the retailer finds himself unable to meet his payments to the jobber as promptly as required, unless he carries ona bar- ter trade, and sends his produce to this market to realize the cesh for. The low price of produce makes the farmer poor, his poverty aifects the country merchant, snd hein turn af- fects the city dealer, and so up to the manufacturer, until all Jean on each other fer support. We shall give more particulars about this important branch ¢f our trade after the season has further advanced; navigation will soon be free from one end of the country to the other, when we may expect greater arrivals of strangers, which will enable us to judge, far better than ‘we can at present, what the amount of our spring b ness willbe. In the meantime, let the city jobbers be careful, and not urge their customers to purchase more than their resources will justify, for the loss will assured. ly4all where it is deserved. Now is the time to establish this trade on a sefe system, that will govern it for years to come. Cattle Market. There were plenty of Beeves, Cows and Calves in mar- ket, but very few Sheep, indeed scarcely any. ‘The scar- city of sheep is owing mainly to the muddy condition of the roads. Sales of Cows and Calves have been made at $15a25 each, which shows a reduction in prices. We give no quotations for Sheep. Beeves range from $4 to $7 a hun- dred weight. Very few, however, fetch the latter r In Cincinnatti beef cattle on the Sth instant ranged from $2 50 to $2 75a hundred weight; hogs from $2to $2 25; and milch cows from $8 to $16 a head.
