. Bank Mobile, $50, 000, 1 payable in New Yew York, May: fe ‘ Powtaers Pare a i e “4 tay ille " " ” coe 12500, “ New Orleans,June 1. “ © Decatur 25,000, ** New York, May 1. “ow “ 12500, New Orleans,June | Total am’t. of int. $132,500, due in May and June. ‘We have not learned in what manner the Bank contem- plates remitting the New York interest, but suppose it is intended to purchase exchange, ‘as over $160,000 was sent to New Orleans on account of the Bank. ‘The Legislature of the State of New York adjourned yesterday. Among its good deeds, may be enumerated its refusal to receive the $84,863 50 sent to it as part of the distribution of the public land money, and now on de’ posite in the Commercial Bank of Albany. The federal government will therefore take it!back and apply it to its debts. The law abolishing the Bank Commissioners we will give to-morrow. A most beneficial act to the trade of this city hasbeen the abolishing of compulsory inspection. This inspec: tion tax has weighed heavily on the produce trade and ts removal is of great service. Itis another step towards an abandonment of the artificialfberriers set up between the free commercial intercourse of individuals. Legislatures are beginning to recognize the fact that merchants have sense enough to take care of their own business. The gross inspection fees in the State of New York for 1842, amounted to $170,000. The following are the leading articles which bore this tax in the city of New York:— Beef and Pork, gross fees, ‘1842, + $50,627 Leather, + «12,709 ion of money affairs in this country and in England, is very remarkable. All the elements of are- vulsion are apparent. Money for along time has been ex- ceedingly plenty, while prices continue very low and the stagnation of business very great. The result of this state ofthings both here and in England, is an exhorbitant rise In stocks. The following table of the state of affair, in England, March 6, 1842 and 1843:— Cownency of FNGLAND with tHe Rate oF INTEREST AND Per Cent Consors. In the United States, money has been also oumulating in consequence of the stagnation of trade, results are seen in the following comparison mete of N. York 6 per Price US. cents of 186%. 6pr cts. T per cent. an 8a 99 104 109 a 110 yy Ma it in both countries the rate of money is too low and price {stocks too high. It has heen looked forward to with onfidence, that when the spring trade of England with © North of Europe opens, business will revive. The lurrent willthen turn. The £5,000,000 of unemployed jankers’ deposites in the vaults of the Bank will be with: wn and holders of stocks begin to realize. The doubts id discredits hanging over United States stocks will ex- their effect, and send to this market large quantities, here the present high rates will insure of their being alized without much loss. We are aware already of Irge orders to this effect, being transmitted to London by ents here. Simultaniously with this movement the re’ wal of trade here will renew the demand for money, \d the present small banking capital will find ample em- loyment in the channels of business; consequently a r pid realization of the present investment: stock must sue. Itis very evident that if bank funds are to be in- ‘sted in government 6 per cents at 110, yielding no more lan 5$ per cent, the capital had far better be divided ong the stockholders, who can individually do the ¢ thing without expense. Trading capital is always valuable in this ceuntry to allow of its lying at 5 per t interest. true that a small amount of money in de now goes farther than a very large sum formerly. t with the reanimation of trade prices will rapidly ri Jd money be absorbed by the double process ef increa! values aud activity of demand. The whole state of irshere and in England indicates that stocks have ap- ached their highest points, and that a fall, heavy, ra- and disastrous to the weak helders must speedily take eC. ‘he temporary abumdance of money here at the com- nd ef speculators, has served to sustain those stocks— fidence in which hes been lost on the part of cal ane in some degree. The prices of the latter stock in De ‘ter last was 77 ; and in spite of the large sums thrown nthe market at 80 to 40 per cent discount by the State ay temporary loans made to discharge its interest and 8 borrowed of the banks, the State stock agents ‘e managed to prevent a fall greater than 10 per cent he stock. Of late their efforts have been very great backed by the great abundance of money, they hat ly sustained the market under the large sales of capi- 8. Their object in so doing was to introduce the loan of 7 per cent for $1,600,000 interest and principal ble in New York. Proposals for this loan were ad- ed yesterday, receivable until the 18th May. The ice states as follows :— his loan is authorised b: A lof Ohio, passed March 13, pay it there is specifically pledged and aj appropriated the plus Revenue recs ived by the State of Ohio from the ‘ed Stages, and all lands belonging to the publie ks, except such as are pledged for the redemption of ja issued under the act of March 7, 1842. The amount e Surplus Revenue is $2,007,000, and the Lands are ated at $420, ese proposals are an open unblushing violation ef faith. No better comment can be made on the action than to give the opinion of the man that per- tes it, John Brough, Esq. Auditor of the State of |, in his annaal report, dated Dec. 6, 1942, alter de- jing the misery of the contractors, remarks, page ound ae the State is, by the voluntary pledge of her the act of March last, not to make further sales reign stocks, her authrities will be compelled to look me resources * * * The lees sacrifices that already been made, onthe part of the State of Ohio, intain her faith with the holders of the stock, have iven to, and maintained for her, that character and t to which shes entitled. ‘This, however, does not en in anywise, the obligation ; and should not i- to any, act by which that faith and credit may be d. There is much due to the present holters ir Hock nd by no act should their value bo wanto 1 little months after this doctrine is preached finds als for $1,500,000 foreign stock advertised in New by John Brough, Auditor of Ohio, and not a6 per jock, but 7 per cent, as if in very wantonness to the State creditors. Yet these people talk of the f Ohio with as muchjself complacency as N. Biddle talk of that of Pennsylvani: recent puffs that have appeared, preparing the way jis henorable loan, have roundly asserted that ne was soldto pay interest. Turn we to page 29 of the port and we find the following :— uring the last month (November) a e by the fund commissioners, to of the revenue of the eurrent year, for the pay- {the January interest, This f declined to do.” Canal Fund Commissioners, in their report, state ey sold $1,500,000 of 6 per cent stock at an average ents on the dollar. Of these, $400,000 were to Bar. thers, at 60 cents on the dolla: worth while to notice also what the report said in tion to the collection of taxes, page 13 :— m the best information I have been able to obtai @ several counties, I am inclined to the belief that Hexperience an increased detalcation in the reve- ithe current year. * * * The forfeited list now aan amount of pruperty so large, that the taxes Ing upon it exceed $30,000 per annum, and it is increasing! * * (page l4) The same difficul- ill surround the #1 foot forfeited lands , and so things now undersjood, that hundre to 4 iat hag forfeited, as the best means of avoiding was under the low tax, yet he would have us be- at he has doubled the tax, and that every dollar paid ! @ who reflect upon the disposition of the surplus je and its fatein all the States, will easily understand iterly valueless is such a security. Even in this jew York the surplus revenue loaned out has been went attempts to realize the amount, by sales of ty at auction, have failed.
