and Fancy. Exectrion or or Tricorti.—At the. x min fe 3 hour .f ten o'clock yesterday morning, the the vce iee the 4 prison onal ep re with hon, sands of spretatars.. rat about a s quarierpaetS twelve the wahappy enminal (eonyieted of the Kaye af arson and Berar) the ladderby which he was to ascend the fold. The excitement th fear was so great that his knees tottered under him, and when he had almost reached the platform, t ladder, sqacationst priest and himself fell to the ground. The ladder was more ized, but the wretched man was 80 much overcome that those in attendance were obliged to drag him to the fatal sent. The sheriff read the sentence to him, and.on ache himif be had anything to say, Tricotti put his hand on his ‘heart and replied—* On my, soul, gerith + Ledid not set the house on fire.” The priest. after conroling him with the words of reli- gion, kissed him—the cap was drawn over his eyes —the staal was given, and in afew moments Tri- cotti was among the dead! We were present to witness the experiments of Professor Grant upon thebody of the Italian. Im mediately after the body was taken down from the gallows, it was placed in a cart and conveyed to the hospital of Dr. Stone, where it was given in charge of Professor Grant and his assistant, J. Mil- ton Sanders. The body was placed on a bench an the “dead house,” and in the presence of a num ber of spectators, Prof. Grant commenced his ope- rations. The poles of the battery were first applied the medium nerves of the arm, and in an instant Ka member was exercised with a force whieh w truly astonishing. ~The arm raised up and grasped a case of surgical instruments, ea if it was about to throw it at the person who ‘appeared to be torment- ing the patient. The fluid was next applied to the anterior crwral nerve, and instantly the leg was thtéwn up, and worked with violence; the muscles protruded as it they were strained to their utmost, in the discharge of some heavy and violent exercise. The poles: of the batiery were mow applied to the portia dura, which caused one side of the bedy to work inva fearful manner. The anterior tibial was next excited, and the same curious phenomenon ex. hibited, ‘Theflaid was now applied to the spi cord, and now it was that the spectators were ho: fied wuth the fearful working of the dead man’s [| features. Joy, sorrow, grief, despair, hate, anger, and every passion which human features so vividly portray, were exhibited in their most energetic form, till the professional part of the spectators (and there were many present,) signified their pertect willingness that the professor should cease his ex- periments. After bringing the poles in contact with ; the semi-lunar gang.ion, the experiments were end- ed. It was said by several professional gentlemen present, that they had never witnessed a series of 5 i ig, similar experiments. which succeeded so admirably as those of Professor Grant. ‘Yhe galvanic battery used was so light thata small boy carried it away; still, so energetic is this new. invention of Pro- fessor Grant’s, that it comprises within itself an in- tense power, which to obtain in the old plan, would require a series of plates and fixtures, the weight ot which a horse could not bear. We understand that Protessor Grant intends giving a series of chemical lectures in this city, His lectures, we are sure, will be well atteuded.—N. O. Tropic, March 25. Brora Murper —The St. Louis New Era says: —‘* We understand that a brutal murder was com- mitted at or near Jefferson Barracks, a few days ago, by a soldier named Isham, on the body ot his wife. He shot her through the breast with a pistol, and then fled.” A Counrerrerr $1,000 note on the Leather Man- ufacturers’ Bank, New York city, was offered in this city yesterday—dated Nov. 4ih, 1838, Letter A, No 19, payable to J. A number cf barrels’ of tar were stowed in asmall shed just back of the count- ing house door, and in this the fire originated. It extended to the store and the two stores adjoining, and burnt with great fury, defying for a time the et- torts of the firemen. The store at the corner was oceupied by the Baltimore Railroad Company on the first floor, whose books, papers, iron chest, and goede, were rescued. In the second story was the counting house of Penrose & Burton, who also had goods stowed in Walters & Souder’s store. The store to the west of W. & S. was on fire at the time this was written.
