Explosion of the Oswego Bank—Oswego yet remains —Proof that @ City can Live without Banks—In- dustry—Improvements— Trade. Mr. Epitor— {n the absence or silence of your ci-devant cor- respondents, I will attempt to give you an inkling of the present condition of Oswego. Yesterday our good citizens were all amazement, at hearing that the Oswego Bank had exploded. This appeared the more strange, as a celebrated financier had lately been imported from Troy to nurse that institution. During the whole of yester- day there was quite an assemblage on the steps and in front of the Bank, but no business was done ; the Bank neither paid specie or bills Anxious enquiries in regard to the President were made by the lookers-on, when it was ascertained that he had one home, taking the specie withhim. It was lucky for him that he was not tobe found ; for though it may be wate for “ the Douglas in his hall,” such would not have been the case here Some ‘en disposed to make him unlike Diogenes? on of man. But never fear, the Bank is ¢ circulation does not exceed $50,000,and I the deposites are small. To meet this there are good notes and abundant securities. Our place is looking up. Two mills are being erected in the burnt district, and one, that from ine- ligibility of situation has lain idle, will be in opera- tion this summer. The steamboat and scheo: lines on the lake are arranged for a good summer's business, and as the odious ordinances in regard to salt have been repealed, we expect a good increase of business. The United States Hotel, burnt a year ago, has been rebuilt, and under a popular publican, will again become a favorite. As for our ladies, God bless them, they are the same here as elaewhere—our comfort and our joy— they are “uncertain, coy and hard to please,” or as “ ministeringy angels.” Some fof our most beau- tifu young ladies, who have been lionising else- where, have returned to gladden our hearts with their smiles. With great respect to you and yours, IMOTHY. Baltimore. {Correspondence of the Hera ld.] Bautimors, March 22, 1843. The most Astownding Discovery ever dreamed of in the Philosophy of Man—Phreno and Animal Mag- netism thrown into the shade—Confirmation of Mil- lerism and the End Approaching—Proselytism by the Wholesale—Extraordinary Excitement. Frrenp Bennetr:— Never before in the annals of American history has there been known such an extraordinary ex- citement ag now pervades our community. It com- menced with experiments which for several days have been making in the science of Animal and Phreno Magnetism, by a fat, good natured gentle- man from Virginia, named Jeter. He first met with strong opposition from able and learned gentlemen, who were disbelievers. Finally, phenomena so striking were produced that these very same scep- tics became converts, and are now thestrongest ad- vocates of Mesmerism. You may be surprised when I tell you that amonget them are ministers of the Gospel, judges of the bench, lawyers of the bar, phvsicians of the best reputation, ard citizens gene- rally of the strongest minds—all claeses, young and old, elite and plebeians, are ina perfect state of ex citement, wonder and astorishment. The Hall, or Saloon of the Law Buildings, where the lecturer holds forth, is nightly a perfect jam. Every one poseessed with physical ability, has become a mes- merizer, and are making daily experiments, which prove successful,so far as tosatisty themselves. Dr. A.’s yellow boy is the lion of the night. He manipulated, and responds to the touch upon his hrenological organs with as much precision as the at of @ piano under a skiltul finger, to the melody of sound. Rub mirthfulness with tune and he not only sings, but dances Lucy Long—touch com- bativeness, and he becomes rampant as a mad dog— then benevolence, and he searches his pockets for money, which is generously extended te the person nearest him—senst'iveness being excited, he is mum —veneration, and he assumes the attidute of prayer —adhesiveness, with a slight pressure of amative- ness, and he veciferates a love ditty—and to con- clude with self esteem, he is the perfect ‘dem foin” nigger, and no mistake. Wonderful, however, as have been the phenomena in this infant science, another has just been discovered that makes it, when brought in contact, appear as a mere plaything, and and baffles all speculation. 7 Language fails me to find an appropriate name by which to cognomise the new and astounding dis- covery just made and developed in this city, but for want of a better { must call it ‘‘Aeriotistn;” and now for a brief statement of its incomprehensible operation. ‘The subject is placed in an easy chair, with the feet resting on a pedestal nearly at right angles. The eperator then commences with ma- nipulations reverse precisely of those used in the old way of preduciag the magnetic sleep, running from the extremity of the legs and toes towards the hand, thereby dispersing the fluid into the surrounding atmosphere, similar to the radiation of heat or light. After a considerabie time, say 20 minutes, has been thus appropriated, the subject is then placed cau- tiously in an upright posture, having his full weight on both feet. e Aeriotizer still persev is manipulations, ac the same time having his eyes, aa well as_his mind, fixed and concentrated, not upon the subject under his influence, as in Mesmerism, but on a certain position in space, at any desirable distance, (say five or ten feet,) trom the earth. Thus, t agiven period, when the Aeriotizee is sufficiently rarified by the dispersion of fluid, it only requires the Aenotizer to will that his subject shall ascend to @ given point in space, when, quick as thought, he does it, and there remains stationary, entirely un- supported by any perceptible power, exhibiting the most astounding phenomenon that ever man beheld All whe saw this were literally confounded—aye, o’erwhelmed, and could not refrain trom declaring that the mysteries of the human intellect, and the discoveries of men in these latter days, were even overleaping the powers ol thought. Two experi- ments only of this kind have as yet been succesetul. One of the subjects was an intelligent mulatto boy, of about faurteen years of age; the other a white boy with a red head, whose name | have not learned. There have been but three failures, and they but partial. Some have attempted to solve the mystery by asserting that the power of gravitation is wholly --for the time being—annihilated. Having thus gotten the Aeriotizee thus into space,a difficulty may oceur to the reader, how he is brought down again. This is done by placing a ladder against him, on which the Aeriotizer ascends, and gradually rever- ses the manipulations. Herein have I given as ac- curate an account of the above infant fecemenen as I could well do ia the brief time I have had to look into the incomprehensible mystery. 3 The advantages that may result irom this new discovery, provided it does not portend the end epo- ken of 6: Miller, must be obvious. The Aereoti- zer, T understand, can will his subject to pass through the etherial regions with the velocity of a comet, trom one sphere to another, or from one continent to another. It so, it will supersede the necessity ot telegraphs, and save the 1,000 anpropriation re- pi he for that purpose. {t will also do away with ballooning, and supplant the dangers of steam navigation, as also that of locomotive collisions on railroads. Aerial na’ ion myst be the resuit, a half dozen good subjects, well Aetiotized, with a car attached to their ankles, can, it is computed. carry thirty passengers at the rate of four hundre miles per hour. The only disadvantage Isee attend- ing it 1s, thatit generally adopted as a mode ot con- bie Age it may operate very much against the sale of the State’s interest in our internal improve- ments, and render the act of the legislature in refer. ence thereto, abortive. The editor of the Clipper, Dr. Anon, Dt. Jennings, Z. C. Lee, United States District Attorney, possibly Cosuphilus, Rev. Mr. Kirta, Dr. Gibson, the Editor ot the Republican, Mr. Ludlow, and several others, I believe, have he- spoken (he first seats, and wil probably make ar axperimental tour to the Celestial Empire,as soon as definite arrangements can be made for the voyage. Their captain and helrasmen will doubtless be cho- sen by battot.
