Letters from New Orleans to-day, give advices of the failure of the Commercial Bank, one of these which un- dertook to resume. The others were hard run for specie. ‘This failure isan instance of the folly of attempting to re- suscitate weak banks. When the concern resumed it got an extension ofits liabilities, which have again fallen due, and aredishonored. The City Bank got assistance from its stockholders, Rothschilds being the largest, and is in less danger, although not more solvent. The assets of the banks are continually growing worse, and they are making no money ; consequently the end must come.— The banks in this city have the hardihood to endeavor to make something towards expenses by loaning, on stocks, to irrespansible people. By so doing they become the ar. chitects of their own ruin. At the Board to-day prices were worse. New York State 6's fell } per cent ; Ohio 1} per cent. The Senate of that State have passed a resolution abolishing the Fund Commissioners, and establishing an individual stock agent in the City of New York. Some of the shrewdest brokers have offered to give the State $5,000 to $10,000 per annum for the office. They would make a fortune every year at that, providing they could borrow it on the steck. Ken- tucky 6's fell $ ; Bank of Commerce } ; Hariem }. At the New Board prices were about the same, with @ general disposition to sell, particularly Ohio. The fall in prices keeps the gentlemen on the alert to make good the required margins on bank loans, Mobile is dull at 20a 21. There arrived at = ‘etal ecrranel on the 19th, $162,9¢2 in specie from Tampico. The totel liabilities of he State of Ohio are $19,947,325, including every thing. The debt bearing interest is, how- ever, as follows :— fone debt, see eee eee $12,876,324 1,883,584 Sa meas . 321,640 Due contractors on public werks,.. 800,000 16,331, Stock issued and subsc: iptions to com- ice PANIC, 66. 6. ee eeeee ee eee 1,893,746 $16,776,294 To thie is to be added the amount required to complete the Miami Canal, $465,041, making $17,240,335. This amount to complete the canal, with that due the contractors, is what composes the new scrip. The interest on this amount is $1,031,419 per annum, to be paid out of the re" sources of the State. The official amount of State, town and county taxes now paid, is $1,994,000 per annum— making $2,928,418. This, for a population of 1,519,467, amounts to $2 per head, or $12 per annum for each family in the State. The Governor, in his message, estimated the whole exports ofthe State at $20,000,000. To pay the interest, this must yield 16 per cent profit, and leave no- thing for the purchase of gouds, to say nothing of bank profits. Will pork at 1 cent per 1b. and flour at $225, de livered at Cleveland, pay 16 per cent profit ? And if it should, why should it all be given away 7 The number ot officers interested, not in the State credit, but in the quantity of money which can be raised for them to spend, are eternally preaching about the Canals as a revenue— In order to estimate their value, we have taken from the report of the Board of Public Works, the following items, showing the cost of the Ohio canal and the Miami canal, with the tolls collected for ten years, and the expenses, as follows :— Corr ano Revenve oF 7H Ovro any Mramt Cana ron ‘en Yeans, phio Ce Miami Canal. r 2,933,48 Sens 1833 to 1 053,383 624,634 Deduct repairs oe col’tions, {ue 126 301,103, Net tolls, ten years, verage do. per anium, jMerest on cost! 712 Ft He Now, then, the interest on the cost of both canals i 67,713, and the nett tolls have averaged, for the last ten years, $217,078, showing a deficit of $240,635, and have declined $60,000 in the last four years. We have made no calculation here fer the enormous losses incurred by bor- rowing on stock, being near $600,000 last year. The com. pletion of the Miami canal will, it is estimated by the en Bineers, add $49,000 te the tolls, There will then be ade ficit of $200,635 per annum, with greatly diminished pros- pects of increased tolls, in consequence of the forwardness of the Illinois and other canals, feeding the lake markets. The Ohio peopl » then, $3,000,000 per annum to pay, not only without hope of having it lightened but increased by the growing competition of other States. Their credit is tottering, and is now sustained only by the brokers of whom the State borrowed money. The banks which back this movement by loaning on the stock, incur great risks. ‘The condition of public credit in The United States has been a matter of great surprise to the superficial observer. A young republic of scarcely 60 years growth has, in two wars, waged against the most powerfil government oi modern times, come out victorious and triumphant. It has contracted in that period, up to 1841, debts amounting Sue af bt ot to $460,482,818, which has been paid at home and abroad, ee IS oF FOF a os of Sorina’ Anetionee HOWARIY Mere 3 ten a 115 Fraltew ee ond government paper money, were resorte’ to ; but the pub- lic creditor received full payment at high rates of interest in the same standard in which the debts were contracted. ‘Such an event never befere occurred in the history of the world.
