Variety. Court Maatiat mv Pantapeents.—James P. Ho- ban * counsel fer Lieut. Taosill, yesterday read to the Court, and before the full.st audience which has yer attended its sittings, the defence of hi ag ent. The principal points contended for were, that the publications made in reference to Libuten, t McLaughlin had been proved to be true ; anc second ; that Lieutenant Tansill was not under the command of Lieutenant McLaughlin when those publications were made, and that, therefore, the lat ter was not the superior officer cof the former. Mr H. treated with immitable satire the subject of the Florida flotilla, costing the nation more than a mil- , and the results of which were the death of one | ‘an and the capture of a squaw and two papooses; the encampments formed in a hollow square, i with guard fires in the centre, so that each man on duty was a mark for the rifle of the eer and also upon the questioning of Lieutenant Tansill’s sal ty by those against whom he had preferred el bat which was attested by every other officer on ie station. The indignation which was expressed against the merciless and illegal flogging practised, and against by Lieutenant Tansill, met @ response from all who listened. The proceedings were upon scire facias to re- vive old judgments upon Custom House bonds, and by this vacating the judgments, the lien of the old judgments upon about three hundred thousand dol- jars worth of property is made null and void.—Phil.
