Spice of Life. Naxnow Escape ann Prowasx Loss or Lirs.— We learn from Capt. G. W. Taylor, who has been forsome days engaged, by means of his sub-marine armor, in an attempt to raise the steamboat Erie, which was sunk about a month since off Point Hu ron, Lake St. Clair, that after encountering great inclémency y of weather, and workiag for days sur- rounded by ice, they succeeded on Wednesday last in raising the Erie to the top of the water. "That about midnight he attempted, with eight others, to cross the iceto the shore, a distance of about two miles, but before they reached the lend the ice par ted from the shore, , and gthey found themselves ra- pidly drifting into the la’ He immediately deci- ded their only hope wasin returning, if possible, to the boat, in whiehhe was seconde: by four of his companions, but the remaining three of the com- any permite in their attempt to reach the land, and fad not been heard from so late as Friday even- ing. Capt. T. thinks they must have perished, as immediately on escaping on board the boat, the ice e way, and was broken to pieces by the waves. e did not learn their names.—Detroit Gaz. Hops.—We have made some yy within a day or two relative to the ct for this article, and have no doubt, from the best information we can obtain, that the crop, in the south eastern part of Indiana, at least, is large, and of excellent quali- ty, and well secured. ‘There is, however, but little 1 quiry for them in this market yet, and a fair quota- tion may be put down at 6 to 8 cents, within which range we have known several sales recently. It requires, however, the very best quality to bring 8 coamene it would be difficult to make a sale of a very large lot of such at that price, in tae present state of the market. Hops, of a very good quality, have made-their appearance here this year, grown in the north-east part of Ohio, between Wheeling and Pittsbu As the season here is larger, and more favorale to the growth of hops, than in New England, our brewers will give them a preference of 1 or,2 cents a pound over the Eastern, where they are well cured, and free from sticks and leaves, and not scorched, We believe but few have been shipped East this season.. The only lot we have noticed, was one on the Neptune, of about 5,000 Ibs. destined for New York. The last Boston steam ship brings information that the ake of hops in the Netherlands and Germany has failed, which, the New York papers say, has given some animation to the market there, w! vere they are quoted at 11 a 15 — in Boston at 9 a 11 cents,—Cincinnati cette. DeaTH OF THE LAST OF TRE ACADIANS IN CANADA. —That_ venerable patriarch (says. the Minerve) Alexis Chenet, a native of Acadia, died at St. Denis, on the 12th instant; nt the advanced age of 106 years. He was one of those who saw, at an early age, all his countrymen driven from their birth-place, carri-d to those British Colonies, now the U1 States. He was himself put on board an English frigate, and served twelve years as aseaman. He obtained his discharge in England and came. to Canada in hope to find some of his family. Having fixed his residence at St Denis at the age of 25, in 1761, he cut the first tree with his own hands, and cleared the fourth concession of this parish. He has left nine children and 71 great Rexak ahilarsnt _ Montreal Herald. Bap Marcnes.—Mr. Bim was seized with a bad ee in his stomach the other night, and got out of bed to look tor his hot drops. From the usual place on the mantel-piece he took up what he supposed to be a row of matches, and, one after another, he snapped them off without ’ effect, and as he threw down the last, he gave vent to his vexation by ex- clauming, “ Dang it, these matches won’t go.” His wife now came to his assistance, and upon the other end of the mantel-piece found some matches, and having obtained alight, the first object that met the astonished eyes of both was the head of her best tortoise-shell comb, with every tooth broken outand thrown upon the floor. As Mr. Bim stood looking aghast at the destruction worked by his own mis- guided hands, Mrs. B. cast a reproachful glance at him, and retired to her bed without uttering a sylla- ble.-Boston Post. Exraorpinary Success.—The ship Bowditch, Sowle, of Providence, sailed on a whaling voyage in July, 1841, and in thirteen months from the time of her sailing, she took on_ board 3500 barrels of oil, and bone to the amount of about $10,000, and ‘ put away for home.” The oil and whalebone, consti- tuting her cargo, is valued, at the present prices, at $50,000. She was fitted fer a three years voyage. and the Captain has disposed of his surplus prov sions to other whaling arg in the Pacific, at high prices. This is one of the best voyages, considering the time out, outfit, &c., which has been made at any American port for many years. Tue U. 8S. Supreme Court meets, in annual ses- sion, on Monday next.
