Mr. Bennett:— I observe you have complied with my request now devolves upon me to fulfil my promise,—I say to you in as briet a manner as the girls used to say to you as they were tripping to their work, “Mr. Bennett, give me the ‘Herald.’” I say here is my lucubrations; publish them if you deemthem worthy your notice. Were it not too late to interest or benefit any one of your readers, I could name to you how our Mis- souri Bank gave credit and caused the bills of the Mineral Point Bank to be received on deposit, and in payment for notes due it, andplaced on a par witl its own issues—how the Cairo Bank gota circulation through the Mntual Insurance Company office—the Miners’ Bank through the Gas Light Insurance Com- pany—the Bills of the banks in Illinois kept at par by being received on deposit and in payment of debts due the Perpetual Insurance Company and the Mis- souri Bank, and by them loaned out_ very liberally to the directors and their particular friends, and of the demise of the Mineral Point Bank, Caire Bank, Miners’ Bank, the banks in Illinois and their god- fathers, the Mutual Insurance Company, Gas Light Company, Perpetual, and of the alarming illness of uri Bank, which had shown symptoms of consumption for some time past, and many of our good citizens feared the hasty consumption had overtaken it, but by calling to its aid the assistance of skilful and experienced men, it wae restored to its wonted good health, the disease having been erased, in a manner, from its system, and its restora- tionto Cee health. é i I could name to you the particulars attending each movement ; but as they are numbered among the things that were, I feel confident the reviewing of them would not interest your readers. The poet says, ‘‘after life’s fitful fever man sleeps well,” so it has been in the above named inanimate bodies. Business, for the past month, has been extremely dull; all the rivers above our city are, and have been closed for the past four weeks. The Mississippi river never was Enowea, to have been aslow as it has been the past fall, but 35 feet water on some of the bars below our city. The extreme low water has played the duece with our steamboats. The chan- nel of the river is fullof snags and sawyers—when the water becomes so low as to compel boats to keep in the channel, then the boat owners weep for the loss of their boats. The following boats were sunk the last week:—The “Brazil,” “Rock Island,” “Bowling Green,” “Loyal Hanna,” and the iron steamer “Valley Forge.” The latter was supposed to be snag proof, and bid defiance to saw- yers, but the grave yard—as our boatmen term a Bec where lie some dozen boats—proved too much for it, and she was compelled to yield. The Val- ley Forge lies in the channel; boats cannot passthat plave until come of thenr are removed; as the are so thick, itis with some difficulty a yawl can pass through in safety, Many ask “will Congress do any thing for the improvement of the Western Rivers?” We fear they will be too much engaged in Presidential affairs to attend to minor matters, such as the preservation of life and property. Can we not call upon you tolend a he!ping hand ? reflect for a moment how many suffer by the loss of one of our floating palaces, the beatsmen. Many of them have their little all invested, the accumula- tion of years of industry and perseverance ; the far- mers have their produce, stock, &c., on board, searching a market; the merchant, his merchan- dise, the mechanic, his implements of trade, and passengers are crowded onthe bark—and they wend their way to distant ports, with happy hearts and cheerful countenances. As they progress down the stream, they come in contact with that hideous mon- ster, and frequently all are consigned to a watery grave. Imagine the feelings of that man as he sits on the bank of the river, beholding the waves rolling over that bark containing his all, which, but a few moments before, was ploughing the water like a thing of life. What pen can describe the anguish of that mother when news is brought to her, that her only son and supporter in her old age, had met with a watery grave? I leave the subject, pe you may feel sufficient interest in the welfare of the citizens of the West to lend a helping hand Our Legislature has been in session about three weeks—they have been busily engaged, and have accomplished the following:—Re-elected Dr. Linn to the U.S. Senate; elected Mr. F. Kennett president of the Bank of Missouri; elected officers to the dif- ferent branches ; abolished lotteries and the sellin; ot lottery tickets within this State. ‘The financia men from the upper counties are trying to effect a trade with the delegation from this’ county; they wish the Missouri Bank, stone building and all, re- moved to Jefferson city, and give in exchange the Penitentiary—about an even exchange, if the movers are thrown into the latter to superintend to the fi- nancial department. Now, Mr. Bennett, if you want to break your suspenders and burst your but- tons off laughing, just come and take a peep at our legislature. From reading their speeches I have come to the conclusion it is a rare collection of wis- dom and intellect. What will be the result of their deliberation and argumentation would require a much better Yankee than I am to guess. One thing is certain, if the financial bill should become a law, the punishment inflicted, which is the State prison, for a violation of it, will be but a very short time, if Miller prophecies correctly. : The Illinois Legislature commenced its session two weeks ago. Some of the members have relieved themselves of considerable wind they brought with thém to the sect of government, against the State and Bank_ of Illinois. Nothing has been done for the benefit of the citizens of that State. Letters from Springfield, received to-day, say Judges Douglass and Breese were the candidates for U.S. Senator to fill the vacancy. ft week the “Liberty Fire Company” gave a ball at the Planters’ House, which was well attend- ed. All classes were there, judges, lawyers, doctors, merchants, manufacturers, married ladies, engaged ladies, would-like-to-be engaged ladies, and misses; all enjoyed themselves well. A good supper was given to the company by the worthy landlord, Mr. Stickney, and when they had their fill of dancing, each wended their way to their respective homes. The company realised about $300, which goes to- wards paying for the engine house recently erected. On Wednesday evening last one ot the series of parties was given atthe same place. This was of a different complexion; no one was admitted but those of noble birth. These parties are got up on able terms, tickets $2, so as to allow persons ment, and the expense trifling. So far, ver¥ good.
